The popular children’s books “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” have hit the big screen, thanks to Guillermo del Toro. The chilling illustrations that defined the Alvin Schwartz books were made by practical-effects company Spectral Motion. INSIDER’s Joe Avella visited the team in Los Angeles to find out how they brought the monsters to life.

As fun as that would be, unfortunately, people in the industry don't allow that. Some are excempted though if you buy it. Which more often than not, has a really hefty price tag due to the amount of work that went into making the prosthetics and suits themselves. (Which the actors usually can't really afford since their pay isn't nearly as big as a hotshot hollywood actor/actress) Plus, even if the actors did get to bring them home, without an entire team of painters and applicators, the costumes wouldn't reach their full potential. Some costumes you can't put on by yourself. Some might just look plain cheap without the paint. some might get too worn out to be effectively scary anymore. And a whole host of other problems

These stories were my childhood stories in the early 2000s that I absolutely love even to this day. Even the song they used in the music box was the hearse song that I loved to listen to during the spooky season. The fact that they stayed so faithful to the books and its creatures just made me so happy and I was very satisfied with how this movie turned out. I hope they make another one that's just as successful because there are still a lot of stories that they can work with.

I love this movie especially when it comes to those monsters. The amount of detail extracted from a single drawing and is translated to real life is just so amazing. Each monster has a unique style and physique and they captured it perfectly. I hope more movies like these are made

Part of what made the original illustrations so scary was the fact they rarely matched the story they were put next to. It always gave the book an unnerving vibe cause a majority of the time you had no idea what the hell you were looking at
