Fun fact, East Germany technically still exists. Ernst Thälmann Island, a 15 km (9.3 mi) long and 500 m (1,600 ft) wide Cuban island in the Gulf of Cazones, was gifted to German Democratic Republic in 1972 by Cuba as an act of fraternity, although the resulting status of the island is now unclear.

It’s important to recognise that the Soviet Union was not just Russia. There were many Soviets in the Union and Russia happened to be the biggest and most powerful of the bunch. There was still a leader of Russia and a government that was different to the Soviet Union government. In the end the president of Russia at the time was captured due to his threat of power.

Officially. In actuality the Soviet Union was just another form of the Russian empire, with different ideology, and many of the "republics" being basically conquered territory, and directly under Moscow's control. Soviet satellite states that weren't part of the Union were vassal states with puppet regimes answering to Moscow.
@endofly
@endofly 2 жыл бұрын
In fact, the Russian Soviet Republic (RSFSR) was not a very influential republic. The leader of Russia, which you are talking about, appeared only in 1989, when the Supreme Soviet amended the constitution of the RSFSR. Only then did the chairman of the Supreme Soviet become the head of the RSFSR, the RSFSR did not have a top official until 1989. the RSFSR was no different from the rest of the republics, it was just a cover for the absolute power of the party. (And no one captured the president of Russia, I think you confused him with Garbachev).

@@ehssal Not necessarily! The Baltic States actually weren't part of the USSR until after World War II. The picture is also a bit more murky because Russia still has close security and economic ties with former Soviet states. The CSTO and EAEU covers Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The 'big one' is obviously Ukraine - the most populous and industrially important of the former Soviet republics (other than Russia of course). If Russia does eventually annex all of Ukraine, then together with CSTO/EAEU, they've already got the lion's share of its former territory and economy back. The other ones are small. Georgia can be already easily dominated by Russia without actual occupation (Abkhazia and South Ossetia are breakaway parts). Azerbaijan prefers closer ties with Turkey, and they are a small country anyway. Turkmenistan is an isolationist state not unlike North Korea with only 6 million people - it's not important and isn't about to join any rival bloc. Uzbekistan is the biggest of the rest, and might be convinced to join CSTO/EAEU later on - they are relatively poor, has 34 million people, and needs/wants economic assistance. Moldova is small & poor country, and breakaway Transnistria might join the "new USSR" if Russia takes Ukraine. The Baltics are tiny, and as mentioned before, the original USSR didn't even have them, there is no need to take them.

Although even today it uses the flag of the Moldovan SSR, it's anthem is noticibly quite distinct in the fashion of distinct but not dissimilar anthems between the Soviet Republics. It should also be noted that although the modern Pridnestrovian Moldovian Republic uses the hammer and sickle on its current national flag, and has a major Marxist-Leninist party by the name of the Pridnestrovian Moldovian Communist Party, the current PMR neither has it as a sole nor fundamental apparatus of administration nor constitutes itself as a socialist society today, as it was in the USSR, as neither proletarian relations of production nor soviets exist in the country today.

As much as we love the Russian Federation as an ally, the USSR was a much bigger partner and the union's collapse led to our economic crisis with famine. And my grandpa passed in 1994 which made the situation worse. My father was able to get the people to grow and eat potatoes to solve the famine (even with its own song called Potato Pride) and it worked. While we still struggle today, we never give up. We have a nation to be proud of, and it is our goal to keep dashing towards the future. Like a song by the Moranbong Band states.

There was huge anti-coup movement back when USSR fell and majority of Soviet citizens voted in referendum to keep USSR but that was countered by Yeltsin's and other new government leaders in former republics. The .dd TLD only was reserved and never used in the public DNS system, .cs was already deleted in 1995 and .yu eventually too in 2010 after Serbia and Montenegro (which had the now available .cs reserved but not used) split up as the last members of the FRY, got their own TLDs and transitioned everyone there. It's also a political decision of the Russian operators not to do the same and keep .su around, but also allow registrations again since 2001.

the soviet union wasn't actually communist. it was just a very severe authoritarian dictatorship. with communism you see the irrelevance of currency but many high-ranking officers and government officials were very rich and had much more power than the average worker. so that was not communism. it was a sorry excuse of authoritarian capitalism hiding under a facade of communism and equality.

I don’t know why you need this info, but still... The Russians call the USSR a word called "sovók"(совок) which means "scoop" in translation. In Russian, "Soviet Union" will be "Sovetskiy Souz"(Совктский Союз) from there and this name comes from, which began to be used from the 70s. But often "sovok" is used in a negative way. Sovkovoe past, typical sovok, but earlier in the sovke

There are also 2 other reasons why the USSR still exists. 1. Transnistria, which claims itself as part of the USSR still, but is unrecognized. 2. The Soviet-Japanese war is still ongoing. Technically. Because the Soviet Union and Japan never signed a treaty ending the war, meaning that Japan is still at war with the political entity of the Soviet Union. A sane person would think the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore, but I'm insane and I think the USSR technically still exists. So WW2 is *still* ongoing
