Imagine you woke up tomorrow and the electricity grid was destroyed. No lights, no coffee machine, not even the internet would exist anymore in your country . This might seem farfetched, but it's not the first time it happened.

Looting is weird. When the tsunamis hit Japan, there was no looting. This makes me want to move back there...

There are a great many value in Japanese society that would improve others' a lot, in my opinion. This is one of them

Another reason to go for alternative energy solar and battery where every area has its own microgrid and if the main grid collapses, the very sun the sent out the solar flare will shine again on those solar panels and recharge your batteries.

1:47 it's not about production it's about distribution, and your personal grid will also be fried unless you protect it from an EMP.

If it did hit a country, yes it would disrupt power for a time, but we are able to repair things pretty quick in a 1st world country nowadays, but for developing countries this could be much more devastating depending on how long it would take for them to fix the issue, and if they were in this development stage they would likely not be reliant upon it enough for the disruption to cause mass death, the worst that could happen is if the solar flare's emp effect disables a vehicle mid transport, like a helicopter, ship or plane (i don't know if planes could be affected by it or not, the metal on them could protect the vital computer systems enough by acting like a Faraday cage)

One of the reasons why prepping should not be frowned upon... Honestly there are so many scenarios that could end the world as we know it and yet no one seems to care. People think that there will be enough time after a plague breaks out to go to the store buy everything and quietly stroll back home. While yea some of them are quite rare there is nothing wrong with being ready, it is at least better then potentially starving in such an event. Another scenario that 100% will happen is a plague, a major outbreak will kill millions before any strong support effort and the areas worst affected will be very difficult to go in and help.

It's a frightening prospect, this, considering that everything is electronic these days. Preventing anarchy and disorder in the aftermath of an EMP, as I see it, would be to have paper backups for every single piece of information, and backup non-electric steam engines to keep water running and sewage draining.

It's one thing to learn how devastating the destruction of electricity grids can be, yet it's more disturbing that those of us who have the privilege of detaching ourselves from these very same problems--which are already happening in war-torn places such as Yemen--can choose not to care until it actually bites us in the ass.

In movies they always prevent damage by turning off all electronic stuff before EMP strike. I suppose that wouldn't work in real life even if we would know in advance that solar flare is coming

Actually this is a very serious and very possible scenario. It's already happened twice in the last 160 years. The complete and total evolution of mankind is significantly more likely to be stopped by a massive e.m.p than nuclear war or a outbreak of disease or some virus. Considering the electrical grid regulates and manages 100 percent of our life and our ability to travel and even our military we would certainly perish if such an event occurred.

I thought Coronal mass ejection can be detected in minutes or hours before it explodes, therefore we can just shutdown all of the electric grid in the world and there shouldn't be any damage or they might sustain minimal damage,
