The Netherlands also made a big profit during WO I. They acted like an transit hatch between the Allies and the Central Powers for scarce goods (which where many due of the war effort). Also for example, the ship industry, the fishing industry, the steel industry and even the agricultural sector all when trough the roof due to the highly exports. Even when there was little food the agricultural sector preferred to export with an faminen as result. This started a major strike where the whole potato market for the export got looted . Only a few made a big profit for the major part of the population it was business as usual. It's pretty interesting to see how economies can develop in those specific times.

I am swiss. And I am embarrassed and ashamed of this history. But I accepted as true. And one thing that non-swiss people should know is that most of us Swiss don't benefit from this. Yes, the average per capita GDP here is very high. But actually, for local Swiss people such as myself, we don't have such a good income. Good incomes only come to bankers and expats. In fact, something like 20 to 40% of people have to be on subsidies here for insurance, depending on the canton.
@JerjerB
@JerjerB 3 жыл бұрын
Oh and, people here in Switzerland are very sensitive about that. But if you push and prod enough, they will admit that during the war, they didn't really help any of the victims. In fact, someone like my uncle, who is a doctor at the chuv hospital in lausanne., Didn't do anything to help people during the war. In fact, he even dodged the Swiss military here . After the war, when my uncle was traveling in texas, someone on a train asked him where he was from. He told him, switzerland. But actually, then when the guy started praising Switzerland for being neutral and helping America and saying that America could never have won the world without switzerland, my uncle, and he told me this personally obviously, said well we just helped the Nazis just as much.

Guarantee they could get more from the Swiss, if they were so inclined, but I'm assuming a lot of people and countries have a vested interest in the Swiss not turning over their related accounts information... smart for Nestle and other smaller companies to piggy back on that compensation program, get all their shame out of the way in one hit while it's being shared by other businesses and over shadowed by the banks, that way they won't be subjected to any similar lawsuits that target them specifically, as they can always call back to it...

Hello. Swiss here! This is not the most glorious part of our history. Kudos for the quality of the summary. While the actions of a minority of greedy bankers in a dark hour and a consequence of a neutral stance, changing the banking system in Switzerland is still a dangerous terrain for those who tried. We are getting there, slowly as always. As an example, financial services are, now, only ~9% of Switzerland's GDP. I just want also to expand on two points that you are not addressing in the video but will surely pop in the comments. Those complex situations should not be oversimplified. 1. While being a reason for Germany not attacking Switzerland during WW2, the banking is not the only reason (landscape, strategy, timing, ...) are other reasons for it. 2. Switzerland's success after WW2 is mostly due to the fact that it was the only country (almost) intact after WW2 in the middle of a destroyed Europe.

But to add some highly needed context (because this have barely any) All countries returned Jews to Germany - USA, Poland, Denmark etc.. Sweden accepted Jews from Denmark - only when Germany were loosing WW2. As far I understand (might be biased - since I was told by a Swiss guy) USA have much more WW2 Jew money - but since US have more liberal rules for closing idle account - it’s much harder to find a company/person and account for that money.

Americans make movies and documentary in a very interesting way. When they tell a story about American companies and citizens even the crimes are presented like something very good or at least clever. This umbrella of praise spans over the UK as well. After the Communist Times. The tycoons of communism hide their money in dominion countries and protected territories of USA and the UK. USA and the UK even donated citizenships to some of those Communist tycoons. Why don’t you care to make a documentary on some banks in the offshore territories protected or ruled by the USA or the UK? Because, this one, you know is happening right now, not 70 years ago.
