how the switch handles undertale "crashes"

just for anyone that doesn't have a switch and wanted to see how a "crash" works outside of the PC version.
it does the same thing when you try to input "gaster" as the character name, as well!

I think that much would've been a bit far, but I would've been down for a faked home screen where the only profile was Flowey, and the games were just his face, with your only option being pressing "A". Though I understand that much effort would've been too far.

@@salt4318 Yes but only because it was an actual error. Toby or whoever ported Undertale to PS4 made Gaster one of the names with a different effect but forgot to add code for what happens when you type it so the game doesn't have a source of information, so it gives you an error and closes. This is proven by reading the contents of the error message, but this all could be intentional

I feel like it would’ve been way cooler for it to boot you back to a fake home screen with all of the app icons replaced with Flowey, each one immediately bringing you back into the game. Hell, maybe they could hide a secret or two in it.

Its the switch. Vast majority of players are like, 12 and older. Undertale doesnt want a lawsuit for making hundreds of kids never touch their switch again

intentionally crashing your game could lead to loss and/or corruption of data, much like taking out a flash drive without ejecting it first. That has the potential to create issues if the "computer", or in this case, your Nintendo Switch, is still reading or writing data from the "flash drive", or, again in this case, Undertale's save file. Now, I know that the developers could create a failsafe for that sort of thing, however it probably also goes against Nintendo's software standards. Regardless of the circumstances, having your game crash during test plays is not a good look for the developer. but yes, it would be so much better if they found a way to kick you out of the game, and back to your home screen.

@@beesree39 yeah, I realized that Undertale doesn't actually crash, but the game just closes itself. It still probably goes against Sony and Nintendo's software standards to intentionally close your game without warning the player regardless.

My understanding is that it just does the soft reset like this for this one part, where the game would normally force itself to quit. It's not a true crash. If it were, you'd get a lovely error handler known as dance of dog.

This is actually reason enough for me to not buy any console versions again. I fricking loved that moment where you actually think your little indie game is broken. Actively restarting the game, without much hope of it working again and then realizing that you've fallen for a trick was fantastic. It being adapted creatively with console home screens and Sony or Nintendo playing along and showing a fake error warning with the correct look and wording would have been so incredibly great, I would have thrown all the money at them. Shame.

When i first got to that point, i immediately realized it wasn't a crash and the game automatically closed itself, but i thought the game closed because that was the end. I'd already seen a couple games close themselves automatically after the "The End" screen, so i assumed Asgore was the final boss and Toby decided to give the game some weird avant-garde ending just to mess with the player. So of course, i stopped playing then and there. A few days later, i started up the game again to see what would happen if you kill Asgore instead of sparing him. Maybe you'd take his soul before Flowey can get it, and you'd walk towards the barrier, and the game would close right before you reach it, or something like that. The intro's subtle differences (different monster and no clicky text sound) made me go "wait, something's not right" to a greater extent than i imagine they would have if i started playing again immediately after the "crash". And when i got to the "My World" save icon, i felt pleasantly surprised that there's still more to this game than i thought... in addition to the sense of dread you'd normally get from seeing this part of the game for the first time. Don't think there's any other game that has ever made me feel anywhere near that level of "what the heck is going on right now". I forgot what point i was trying to make with this wall of text. Something like "i would've missed out on that kind of experience completely if i played it on PS4 or Switch" or something along those lines, i guess.

I'm pretty confident they made sure the port was basically ready when they *revealed* it. I doubt they were so forced for time that they couldn't force a crash. Nintendo probably just didn't like the idea of the forced crash.

It'd be very easy to keep the function on consoles. According to the narrative, Flowey takes the control of the game: he can save/load, pratically it is as if you are a characters in his game, thus he has also the ability to close it (the game/application). There's no need of any crash/error screen. The game should simply exit to the console main menù (as if the player closes the app).

There should have been an actual crash. A legit error message could have appeared giving you the "The software closed because an error occurred." I bet a crash code could have been implemented somehow. Sucks a crash code will never be allowed. Bummer since other Switch games crash unintentionally but when intended, it can't.

I know it's been two years, but... The game has never been intended to crash. On these parts of the game where it seemingly "crashes", in reality Toby is just calling a function called "game_end()" which terminates the game and closes the window. The problem is that it only works properly on Windows, Mac and Linux. On consoles, the game actually crashes. It is never good to intentionally or unintentionally crash your game, as it can lead to corruption of memory and system instability.
