Awefull is actualy more in line with the original meanings of both awfull and awesome. Awe tended to be a bit more exclusively negative back in the day used less for "oh wow, I am in awe at how great this thing is" and more "Im in awe at the size of the enemy army" (or at least thats how I understood the explanation I heard, dont correct me if im wrong). However as the use of awe expanded the words awefull and awesome eventualy split awefull remaining nearest to the old meaning while awesome went to being purely good.

I’ve actually looked this up before and awesome used to literally mean something that caused awe. Like so incredible it caused you to be in complete awe. Awe-some. ALSO awful used to be a good thing! Just like this video… he did his research lol

"Awful" having a positive connotation has stuck around somewhat, specifically in it's adverb form, "awfully". Unlike the adjective form of "awful", which has evolved to have a purely negative connotation, "awfully" is more dependent on what word it is modifying, similar to "very". As a result, "awfully" can still be positive, such as with "awfully good", as in something so good it makes you full of awe, though it can also be negative if the word it is modifying has a negative connotation.

Well, the definition of awe is "a reverential respect". Awful means bad because something that's full of awe strikes a respectful fear in a person, like an intimidating presence of someone in a powerful position, or the inherently terrifying presence of a lion. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.
