Janet Yellen said hitting the debt ceiling would be a “self-imposed calamity.” As the U.S. nears the debt ceiling, the Treasury Department has begun deploying so-called extraordinary measures.
WSJ’s Jon Hilsenrath explains what those measures are and how they help the country avoid a debt disaster.

What is the debt foundation? The debt ceiling is unrelated to future spending. This money has already been spent. The debt ceiling needs to be lifted to pay for what we have already spent. Negotiate the budget when the budget comes up on the fall.

Yes, exactly: The US has to raise the debt ceiling because it can't pay it's investors, after that, they borrow more to pay the previous investors their interest, but the cycle keeps repeating. It's a vicious cycle, that ultimately will lead to a US default. My opinion: I think that everything in the US is a ponzi scheme, from government debt, all the way to suburban sprawl.

@Gloria I disagree with you, Gloria. First of all, the US is one of the most security countries to invest in, so if you are an investor, would you prefer to invest in the USA or Brazil? We already default in our history. Do you want to take the risk without any gain? So, if US' s interest rates increase, we need to increase our interest rates too, because without that we will lose all of our dolares, Do you want your money in Reais? I doubt that. Another point is that our money, Reais, have as guarantee your money. With your inflation, you are destroying our current and our reserves. USA' s inflation has the advantage that everyone wants dolares. However, if it is not because of that, you will suffer a bigger inflation because your government has been spending too much. If you want to understand this process better, you can study the 90' Brazilian monetary history.

The advantage the US has is that the US dollar is the gold standard (as it were) for the world. Every other currency is compared to and valued in US dollars. That's why it would be so disastrous for the US to default, not only for the US, but for the world, and why it won't happen. To default would be unconstitutional, so if Congress doesn't raise the limit, the president will do so unilaterally, or they will mint a trillion dollar coin, or whatever, and the courts will back up the administration because the credit of the United States "shall not be questioned".

Or we can expand paths to legal immigration here. The demand is there, the supply is available, but for some reason there's a particular party who refuses to negotiate on immigration. Immigration is what sets us apart from many large economies. Look at Japan's stagnation for decades to see what happens when you have a developed economy but are averse to immigrants. We'll see the same thing with China in a couple decades as their population time bomb explodes. Many of the younger generation consider it too expensive to have kids, that having kids is now a luxury and no longer a basic expectation. If you can't get your population to grow internally, you need to start looking externally.

When you borrow money, you get quick gains and then it eventually becomes HUGE losses. Simple example: A person finances a new car for $31,000 at 5% interest over 6 years. They quickly drive off the lot with a car. After 6 years, they’ve paid $36,000 on a car worth $8,000 today. That’s a big loss for a car. The lack of well thought out Federal Budget that is ever increasing is becoming a disaster for America. Government budgets at all levels Local, State and Federal are loaded with wasted dollars. These wasted tax dollars are very obvious but all government departments are not encouraged to plan out their yearly budget and cut unnecessary spending but on the contrary spend every cent in their current budget and ask for more for the next fiscal year. Massive lack of fiscal control has put America in this position. Cutting government waste at all levels would be a very good start saving $10s of billions of dollars each year or more to be applied to the national debt. Look at it this way at our current national debt every American citizen would have to pay about $690.00 per day in taxes for a year to pay off their portion of the debt. The means each person would have to make about $90.00 per hour and work 10 to 12 hrs per day 7 days a week to make it happen. That will never happen. Take away the governments credit card.

We do not need a debt ceiling. Congress has the sovereign constitutional authority to borrow money to fund legislation passed by a majority vote of congress and signed into law by the president. Congress already has the purse strings, and using the debt ceiling to defund lawful legislation signed into law is unconstitutional by defaulting on our lawful debt. The 14th amendment, section 4, clearly states the lawful debt of the US shall not be questioned. Furthermore, the Perry decision does not allow the congress to invoke the will of the people to withdraw or ignore our debt acquired on the pledge of full faith and credit of the United States because doing so, "assumes the constitution contemplates a vain promise."

increasing the money supply and continuing the QE efforts is a major reason for the inflation spike.

then why did inflation only increase in the 2020s, and it remained flat in the 2010s, when QE was in full swing?
@Operationfocus

@@newstartyt3700 Its only recently that the Federal Reserve and other central banks decided to start unwinding QE. This is known as QT or Quantitative Tightening. You see the government bonds that the central banks purchase are put on to their books. Eventually when the bonds they bought come to maturity they need them off their books so will sell to investors. Now the Bank of England states "The money we created to buy the bonds and overall amount of money in the economy goes down" Except they are wrong, the money they created was put into housing by commercial banks, hence the rise in housing year on year. Or put into the stock market hence why it has also been inflated. With higher house prices and financial assets an inflated economy meaning inflation and the central bank needing to now use higher interest rates to control access to borrowing.

How does this compare to Canada, the uk, and Europe? Europe has worse inflation and they aren't raising rates. This has its own issues too.

How can Congress pass a budget without increasing the debt ceiling? This in 1000% the fault of Congress.
@OneCobalt

It's actually even more specific, it is the fault of House Republicans. Back before the GOP took the House in 2011, there was something called the 'Gephardt Rule,' which essentially made it so that when the House passed a budget bill it was also considered an automatic raising of the debt ceiling. That is why it seems we are more and more often getting into these debt ceiling battles, it just wasn't as much of a problem between the 1970s and the 2010s because budget bill votes were also votes to raise the debt ceiling in the amount of the budget. The House GOP got rid of it after taking over in 2011. Budget bills must originate in the House, so it is one of the few areas where the Senate is just along for the ride instead of being able to put up its own budget bill (though the Senate must ultimately vote in favor before it goes to POTUS for signature). The White House, House Dems, and Senate Dems are all supportive of raising the debt ceiling, and I'd bet that a handful of Senate GOP would approve to get past the filibuster. So it truly does come down to the House GOP as the ones causing all this heartburn.

Debt ceiling must pay the interest rate when time up. Then declare recession and downgrade US dollars immediately. IMF cannot allow US country Govt just up the debt ceiling increase ,then pay the interest rate first! UN security council affairs must pay by US country Govt.lf not all countries will vote for change to other countries on 5 permanent countries for 4 to 5 years routine. Action now!
