How the UK’s landscape and wildlife has changed in the last 70 years

I have lived in the same house, half a mile down a lane from a village, next to a river for nearly 70years. When i was a boy it was like the pictures in the ladybird books, the sky in summer was full of swallows , martins & swifts, now most of the time there are none, the cuckoo is not so common, the turtle dove was a common sound, now no longer heard. In summer evenings the sky was full of bats from noctule to pipesrelle, now i can count on one hand the number. My mv moth trap would attract 30 to 40 garden tiger moths in an evening, now 3 is the most iattracted. I could go on with many other species, even the decline of the house sparrow & starling. Over the years many field now have houses on them, plus a couple of caravan sites. The fact that with the increase by several hundred thousand humans to our small island a year, & being told we need more housing, i am afraid wildlife will suffer even more.

UK population in 1952 was 50 million, 70 years later after adding millions to the population and harassing all those that opposed such changes, now its 69 million. A MASSIVE 19 million increase in population on this island, and then you complain the environment is suffering due to sprawling housing estates, new roads etc??🙄

@njpringle Some observers of illegal arrivals, and visa overstayers, suggest the true number of people in the UK today could be as high as 85 million. During the widespread covid lockdowns the UK supermarkets estimated, from their data, that they were feeding 80 million people. Those real-time figures should not be forgotten or swept under the carpet - as the government would like us to do. Of course, our shameful government knows these numbers only too well.👎🙈🙊👎

@@comealongcomealong4480 I heard ex PM John Major on the radio casually say 'the UK's 70 million plus population', which I thought was interesting, the official figure is only supposed to be 68.5 million at the moment, so it sounds like he has been told the real number.

The corporate might of the supermarkets could choose to keep publishing this data in the public forum, since they capture a good estimate of the true number of people here. Sadly, for this small island and it's countryside, the more mouths to feed - the more potential profit to them. /Are the numbers of recipients receiving benefit payments in the UK made public ?? That kind of data could also contribute to a picture of our true population numbers. Another indicator might be growth in UK motor vehicle registrations. The truth is leaking out now, and I sincerely hope the British voter swings to government MPs who do care about the well being of their people and the security of their nation.

Very interesting report from Holkham Estate. Bedford Borough Council are turning over large meadow spaces to rewilding, allowing meadow flowers to establish and flourish, saving diesel in reduced mowing is a plus too.

Do you mean that upon reading reading a report issued by the Holkham Estate , that Bedford Council followed suit. Otherwise your remark suggests that Holkham is in Bedfordshire , which I’m sure you know , is in Norfolk?

In my home of "Blackpool" (UK) just 3 miles from the town centre we used to see wild Hares running free, this area was known for the Tomatoes in the 1960s before imports. Nearly all the original green spaces around me have been taken up by industrial units and roads in the last 40 years.

where I Live they are building housing and motorways everywhere, I hate it, They say it's to provide more housing to house more people, but actually they sell most of it, building more houses doesn't change anything or make it cheaper, it just means more houses, if we are to become more self sufficient we need to waste less, improve our infrastructure through resource re-appropriation and spending more wisely, looking at also where the money is going and how it's being spent, we should try to do more rewinding projects and remove unused roads and buildings, repurpose old buildings and try to establish our own styles again, increase wild foods and try more traditional foods that have been lost to comfort foods and the americanisation of our diets, we can easily and cheaply sustain ourselves, it just takes us making small manageable changes, also in the UK I think we need to try to bring back our own industries again, just export less and focus on our approach and attitudes

I am over 70 so remember the days when you saw hedgehogs scurry over the road in the evening and in July and August pieces of wasteland which were usually covered in wild flowers would have literally hundreds of night flying insects, moths etc. Feeding on them. Birds nested in various parts of a building, under eaves and between gaps in soffits. Fast forward 70 years. Any hedgehog venturing onto a road will more than likely get flattened, waste land and even gardens are now seen as ripe for development to “ make even more money “ and UPVC has cover ornate Victorian weatherboarding and sealed so nesting places no longer exists.
