You forgot to mention that this city has one of the worst wealth gap on Earth, with THE most expensive housing on Earth. Millions of people living in miserable conditions, anything from a family of three living in 300 ft. apartments (that's called lower middle class), tiny closet-sized apartments or literal cages

Something i really don't understand about getting hotel rooms with gyms, huge flat screen tv, etc. I mean if you are a tourist, you are supposed to be enjoying "outside" and not the "inside of your hotel". I would rather pay good money to be surrounded by happy people, strong wine and beautiful women.

People often comment on why HKers are always talking about money and so materialistic. It’s because they are exposed to some of the most obscene display of wealth AND the most gut wrenching display of poverty daily. How important having money is is literally in your face 24/7. Hong Kong has so much to offer for cheap, you can go up to the 55th floor of the IFC for free if you bring your passport, junks are usually relatively inexpensive for a good day out on a boat, you can go to Chi Lin Nunnery, Choi Hung Estate, Montane Mansion, Ping Shek Estate, you can climb mountains (Ma On Shan is a favourite of mine), you can also go to the islands such as Cheung Chau and Peng Chau (I actually ran into Chow Yun-fat in Lamma Island... Really nice guy, took selfies with us and all). You can take the Tram, and explore the street level of HK without needing to walk, markets - tons of markets (I'd avoid the jade market, lots of it isnt real jade and the sellers tend to be very grabby) - if you like technology - SHAM SHUI PO!! golden computer arcade has TONS (and I'm talking 2 floors kind of tons) of electronics, gadgets, wires, entire laptops. Avoid the Taxis if you can since they're very expensive compared to buses and trams and the Star Ferry.

Just look at HK - not this rich, modern side; not the bank buildings and towering glass skyscrapers, but the shitty squalid conditions that most people from HK live in. The Gov are literally ignoring this problem where people pay so much fucking money for a small apartment with 2 rooms. And yet there are places like these and people who visit here with too much money.

Not sure why some people find these expenditures "disgusting." These wealthy people, who already have beneficial capital investments in various industries, are literally creating tens-of-thousands of jobs in their drive to live very well (in a hedonistic sense, since financially poor people can live very well in other ways, too).
@dasikakn

Tomi Adewole The rich cant create things at scale without the people who work for them. And scale is what makes them rich. If they invent something, they should get something more, but not thousands of times more than the people helping them scale. People like you have an inferiority complex or serf mentality about rich parachuting in to give everyone jobs because you obviously dont value your own work and contributions.

To add on.....best Cheong fun is in Hennessy Road in Wan Chai! The shop is call Zhong Kei. I love hk, though it's small , but very vibrant and I love the scenery while hopping island on a ferry! And new territory are many mountains and hills with apartments nearby! Go to Mah On Shan to view the bful seaside while walking on jogging trail that km's long!!! Finally year end it weather is bful not too cold! If you gave me a choice between New York or HK, I prefer HK! Yes! Property $$$$ is insane! I agree! Probably I grown up with HK movies , and I like their food, and culture! Though there are some rude people but I had meet people I never meet in my place on courtesy ! I was there during that, the university I grew up in (CUHK) actually got seiged a few weeks ago, my dad still lives there. It was still ok to go outside after the triads attacked in Yuen Long since at the time it was an isolated incident and where I stayed (Sha Tin/Tai Po) was still relatively safe, going into the city was 50/50, you could still walk around but you had to be careful of tensions rising. I could not watch this kind of how the rich can enjoy this " life style" in Honk Kong while hundred of thousand of families of four living in a 70 squire feet sub-divided apartment waiting for five years without getting a public housing unit from the Hong Kong government. Have pity on the young children for their parent worked like a dog to provide for the family.

same here, I love learning more about people and their experiences. I grew up in HK and some people I met, usually very wealthy, are just plain rude (except a couple of people that I have met such as Gerald Chan and Chow Yun-fat). Now living back in my home town, Glasgow, I find that the less fortunate of people are actually the least judgemental and they actually listen to what you're saying and they don't criticise you. The rich ones, again except a few, are normally very snobby where I live and it can just get to the point of being pathetic

I don't mind it as long as they got their riches legally. They can't take their money with them, when they go. Let them enjoy the fruits of their labor, just don't put your money under a mattress, make it work for others. As one Texan millionaire saied, "Money is like manure, put it in one place and it will smell; distribute it where it will do some good".

Most of us wouldn't bother to pick up a penny from the ground if we see one, and walk past it. For Bill Gates, 15.000 USD is the equivalent of a penny for him. That is how much money he has.
