The Trump administration has turned its sights on China’s currency as the two countries continue to trade blows in the ongoing trade war. In early August 2019, the U.S. Treasury Department designated China as a currency manipulator, shortly after the yuan fell sharply and send markets into a tailspin. Here’s what a currency war looks like, and what it means for the trade war and global markets.

Dove too bad the last three comments made me facepalm (not yours tho) In general, currency is controlled by governments in various ways. A more explicit way is that countries keep us dollars for international transactions that just happen to pop up due to its stability However, it is not like the US is totally on the right side of history compared to China. Another issue that doesnt seemed to be touched upon is Cryptocurrency. China has many top cryptocurrency projects that are used to funnel funds for finance investment and Crypto Mining China is just bigger. The government is cracking down, probably because of the perceived threat to the Yuan, but obviously top tier coins like Neo still exist. That said, China is playing a dangerous game with its currency. I can only fear for the consequences for the people and the government, strangely enough since this is the first time devaluing a currency has been done on a semi regular schedule.

A weak dollar is BAD due to its importance in global trade in particular commodities. Lower the value of the dollar the price of commodities goes UP because commodities like oil are sold in dollars. The value of the dollar no longer has as much of an effect on oil prices now that the US is the top oil producer in the world because of shale. If oil prices get too high Congress would simply ban the export of US crude oil, like they had done before. Secondly big countries like China are much less dependent on oil than the US, simply because of lower reliance on cars plus the rapid electrification of transport (and diversity of supply of electricity e.g. coal/renewables), and China now has more sources of supply now that the US is a net exporter of oil. No one in the World is fretting about rising oil prices becuase of the rising US dollar, because there's a glut of oil in the market. And it's going down despite a rising dollar because of fears over lack of demand.
@cmdr1911

@@Avantime Different crude oils are produced by shale. A vast majority of refineries don't handle the light crude as well. The largest producers are still forgien companies. The prices can't be manipulated by OPEC as easy but the petrodollar still controls it and that ties it back to the US dollar. A stable dollar with 3% growth is what we need.
@Avantime
@Avantime 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed the US refineries are geared towards handling Middle Eastern heavy crude, but I would assume that if prices get so high that Congress intervenes, then the refineries would've already been forced to retool. OPEC's is now mostly a relic with Russia and Iran under sanctions and Venezuela being an economic basket case, but I agree that a stable dollar is what everyone needs, despite Trump's frequent temper tantrums.

What? No mention that the U.S. has three criteria for identifying a currency manipulator and that China only meets one of these criteria (a trade surplus with the U.S.). No mention that the IMF and the rest of the international community claims that China is not manipulating their currency? No mention that the U.S. dollar is presently artificially inflated in value so of course other currencies would lower in value relative to it unless they manipulated their currencies in order to peg them to the dollar? (The yuan is pegged to the Euro, not the dollar). Nice reporting, almost missed all the important points of discussion.

Not necessarily. A weaker US dollar would mean that US residents can't purchase as many imported products, because these will become more expensive. This will however depend on the elasticity of import's amongst US consumers and producers. Infact a weaker US dollar might actually help to reduce the defecit on the BOP that the US has with other countries, China being a prime example. The purchasing power of the US dollar on a domestic level is ofcourse greatly dependent on inflation. A weaker dollar may cause an increase in inflation due to higher Aggregate demand (as a result of cheaper exports), but this is unlikely to have a huge impact on US consumer spending power. The Fed will use contractionary monetary and potentially fiscal policy to make sure this doesnt happen.

I agree with Trump on alot but a weak US dollar is something I DONT agree with him on. A weak dollar is BAD, a weak dollar causes investors to move away from currency and toward commodities like oil. This is part of the reason why oil and other commodities were so expensive in the early 2000s, investors fled currency and bought commodities instead thus reducing supply of commodities and raising their price.
@cmdr1911

Oil was expensive due to growing economies, the dollar losing value and two wars. The price of oil always goes up in war time. As the value of the dollar goes up, the price of oil falls. Costs for companies are still denoted in their currency, while the value of oil is demoninated in dollars. Dollar falls by 5%, the companies are looking to make up that difference relative to them. Oil spikes when the dollar falls. The result is the same, different cause out the problem I my opinion

They have Australia as their back door dealer. and the Aussie Dollar is pretty stable relative to yuan. They also have East African countries replenishing their energy/food/money/lad reserves, which is becoming cheaper because the price of oil has tanked a lot recently. So, China barely feels the heat of the USA's "tariffs war".

Not necessarily. A weaker US dollar would mean that US residents cant purchase as many imported products, because these will become more expensive. This will however depend on the elasticity of imports amongst US consumers and producers.
