How the Walking Dead plot would have flipped if Rick was never in a coma - Alternate Timeline

SPOILERS for 'The Walking Dead' Seasons 1, 2, and 3.
This video will cover an alternate timeline, where Rick never gets shot in the Pilot episode of season 1; and does not start the apocalypse in a coma.
Surprisingly, this has the potential to impact several important events in the early stages of the show and have a huge butterfly event on key characters and events in later seasons of the show.

I personally think that the group wouldn't have survived the CDC. The only reason they did was because Rick found a grenade while he was stuck inside of the tank. Without it they never would've been able to break the glass, seeing how close they came to dying in the original timeline, they wouldn't have time to look around the CDC for any explosives left by the military.

@@crosshair8504 Idk, mayb maybe not. The tank was obviously put of ammo and fuel. They wouldn't be there if not. Rick would know that, and Shane would definitely know that. I dint think they'd take the risk to enter the tank without an actual goal making it worth it, because a tank is a death trap. Also, rich was already interested in the cdc. Rick was never to keen on heading to anywhere that was guarded by government, or other armed men. Rick wanted to keep moving, his only real interest in the place was Morgan and Shane. It could go either way. I just think Rick would know better then go someplace that didn't have an escape and be trapped after seeing other military failures.

Another very important thing to remember in the differences between Rick being there from Day 1 and Rick waking from a coma and meeting the Jones'... Morgan taught Rick how to take down the dead. Rick & Shane would've went through some trial & error before realizing blows to the head was what ended the reanimated corpses and this may have put their family/group in jeopardy. Rick being in a coma and meeting Morgan was a big advantage for Rick entering the fray.

I would argue that with this timeline T-Dog would have gotten eaten on the highway when he cut his arm without Daryl there to help him and throw the bodies on top of them until the walkers passed.

This timeline would be a very cool one to dive deeper into. First thing I noticed though is that I don't think the walker raid at the camp would have happened since Glen didn't have to drive the challenger with the car alarm back to camp. Since he used the car to herd away the walkers by the store so the others could leave. That may have not been the reason for the walkers getting into the camp how they did, but I believe it's safe to assume so, as the alarm lead them in that direction. But since it never happened in this timeline given, I think the raid (if any) would be much smaller and easier manageable by the group.

I agree that this one would be interesting to further develop. I suppose we'll never know what brought those walkers into the hills (supposedly it was the lack of food in the city) but considering there was a one day difference between Glenn's car alarm and the walkers invading the camp, it's definitely a possibility it was his fault! Though in this new timeline, their attack was pretty irrelevant anyway!

Then Shane never develops feelings for her. Instead he develops feelings for Andrea, and hooks up with her. There's no need for Shane to snap.

REALLY far fetched but when glenn and maggie go to the pharmacy on a run in s2 glenn panics trying to hide lori’s “abortion pills” and ends up scurrying around accidentally picking up the condoms instead which consequently causes maggie to say to glenn that they should use them. so once again maybe this is far fetched but, since in this timeline lori wouldn’t need the pills, maybe glenn and maggie wouldn’t be together?

I really wonder if Otis would be dead. Like we stated, people like Jim and Jackie would still be alive, so would Ed (unfortunately). Makes me wonder if Jim would maybe go with Otis and Shane or maybe Jackie would go since she was with the supply run in Atlanta. This might lead to Either they don't get surrounded in the school so easily, or maybe more people can help get Otis out with his limp if he still twists his ankle. But this could also maybe lead to the mission failing and Carl dying depending on how that raid goes down. With things being so peaceful, maybe good relations could be established with Woodbury and not just a hostile attack since it seemed the reason in the show things got bad was because the attack on Woodbury because Merle took Maggie and Glen. Maybe the Governor never gets unhinged if Michone never attacks him and he doesn't lose Penny? I'd like to know how that could go.

I don't think it's going to be a straight ending. From the north, Negan is with the Saviors, from the south, Virginia is with the Pioneers. Negan could potentially expand his expansion to create a state in the post-apocalypse, at the same time increasing the size of the army of Saviors with the help of the inhabitants of the Kingdom and New Richmond, if it exists in the universe of television (the settlement from the game about Clementine, it is located in Virginia). Virginia could have deepened the expansion to create a state to the north, because Teddy with the Doomsday Cult would sooner or later have discovered a nuclear submarine and fired missiles, covering Texas with nuclear fallout, which led to the death of the Texas pioneer settlements, which would have prompted Virginia with the surviving settlements in Oklahoma to move north. Now the Prison and Woodbury are sandwiched between Saviors and Pioneers. Which side would Rick choose? I hope you will read this

I may be wrong, but I think the saviors were destined to fall. Most civilizations are based off people's reliance for one another, be it food, security or etc. However, negan uses force to subjugate people. Take a look at most cases of oppression, people will eventual overthrow the dictatorship. And given how negan keeps most people alive, he will eventually find himself surrounded by enemies. There will be another eugene, there will be another maggie who will want to kill him. I mean heck even Simon wants him dead. Its possible that the saviors survive, but not with negan on top.

The Governor sustained Woodbury by raiding any outsiders they encountered and then covering it up with a sob story to keep his people fearful and loyal. Woodbury was also close to the prison so I think a war between the two communities is inevitable.

I think that T-dog most likely would have died because when the walker herd went through the cars T-dog only survived because Daryl saved him by putting dead walkers over him. even if he had survived this on his own, he still would have died from infection from the cut later on because Daryl originally saved him with Merle's meds which would not be available.

He wouldn't have caused trouble, and with the larger prison clearing crew, likely would have survived. I also think that the group with the Tank would have run into Rick's group eventually, and with the Tank group having their own Rick and Shane group leading, they could likely join up as well. i think they would pull into fort benning and there would be a bigger herd of walkers than in atlanta and they would instantly speed away meaning they would never be on that highway for sofia to go missing and then carl wouldnt want to go help and then he wouldnt get shot so glenn and maggie wouldnt get married and have a kid and then they wouldnt go to the prison (unless they head back that way) and then they wouldnt get caught with woodbury and thy would never start a war and then they wouldnt be going towards alexandria meaning glenn wouldnt die, and they wouldnt be where they are in season nine meaning rick wouldnt be picked uo by the CRM so in season 10 they wouldnt be there either so they are actually much safer in this timeline

what i think what could happen is that daryl and mearl find out about the prison and with them having a group of there own they attack and loose. Mearl is injured and Daryl is takin prisoner and without the influence of mearl daryl become more of a charater that he is in the actual walking dead. Mearl being injured finds woodberry and the governor takes him im and mearl lies to the governor saying that rick and the prison attacked him and daryl and takes daryl prisoner and with woodberry and the prisoner being so close together the governor leads and attack and leads the prison and attacks and looses but the prison is left unlivable with lori and hersheal dying and the group splits up and glenn finds abraham and the rest of that group and they all meet up at terminus and then they got to gabrieals church and find there way to alexandria and then everything happens the same until they meet the saviors and like mishouns drug trip she becomes a savior after not meeting andrea

I like looking at alternative storylines from a conflictive standpoint. Conflict in stories is what keeps us engaged, so I'll tell my opinions on conflicts in the later story. Skipping S1 and S2, I saw a lot of potential for S3: 1. Daryl and Merle could have an Antagonist story arc, like you said. Possibly even a main threat, based upon their immense survivability. I can see them harassing the prison and destroying portions of the sacred fences to allow them to slip inside and steal more of their stuff, which causes the group to decide to hunt them down. 2. While the governor wouldn't be _as_ crazy as he was in our timeline, the man was still pretty nuts. (Just look at what the Woodbury group did to the soldiers for reference.) After Daryl and Merle are captured/killed in S3, I think the group's conflict for S4 would eventually become the Woodbury group. Here's how I can see it playing out: -A few members of the group are out scouting for supplies to bring back to the prison. Let's say it is Glenn, Shane, and T-Dog. -They encounter some scouts from Woodbury at a local pharmacy, and the two groups engage each other in a very intense standoff, but eventually both escape and retreat. -Shane overheard one of them say "Let's get back to Woodbury" and uses that as information regarding who they saw. (According to Google, Woodbury is either 7 or 23 miles from the prison, so depending on the distance, confrontation was inevitable) -Rick decides to not worry about who they saw, but Shane disagrees. Rick wants to focus more on the prison outbreak more than fighting another group. -Eventually, Shane relents to Rick, but it doesn't stop him from seeking out Woodbury to scout. -Rick and Shane's argument is overheard by a captured Merle and Daryl, who are still very resentful to be locked up in an isolated prison block all by themselves. -Eventually Shane returns with information on Woodbury, stating he found them, and tells Rick the directions to get there from the road. -Also overhearing this, Daryl and Merle execute their escape plan, and they make off. -The morning comes and everyone is on high alert, and Shane takes a small group out to hunt them down and kill them. -In vain, the brothers have made their way to Woodbury (Epic climax at the end of the episode as they come across the walls of the town and suspenseful badass music is playing) That's all for now, but if anyone wants more just let me know

Very interesting arcs. I do like the potential for a three-way battle between the Dixons, Woodbury, and the Prison. And later on the Dixons joining the Governor could cause a lot of trouble for the main crew. I wonder if Daryl and Merle after joining Woodbury could overthrow the Governor and use the Woodbury army against Rick. Or if Daryl and Merle create a Negan like cult from scratch, which The Prison and Woodbury need to work together to destroy. A lot of potential for fleshed out plot lines and spin offs! Fort Benning would be another avenue worth contemplating. I think the soldiers that the governor takes down were from fort Benning. They had a helicopter. They knew what was going on with different communities. They may have had early connections with starting the civic republic.

Great video! Always love speculating on alternate timelines. While it's boring, I don't think much changes (other than the angst surrounding Lori/Shane/Judith). The group wouldn't have been able to convince Jenner not to blow up the CDC. Fuel supplies were running low and the facility was set to self-destruct regardless due to the potential release of contaminants. While a lot of the driving force behind Shane's drift toward insanity is due to Lori, he still tries to take out Rick and gain leadership of the group. He is someone that wants control and will do anything in his path to reach it. The walkers still likely break out of the barn. In the comics, Rick and Hershel tried leading a walker into the barn and Rick was wanting to work rationally with him but the barn broken open and walkers escaped. Hershel probably forces the Survivors off the farm as opposed to them being invaded by walkers, but the Greene family eventually join them as their farm is continually bombarded by hordes. The Governor still exists, again per the comics, he is introduced after Rick, Michonne and Glenn see a helicopter wreck and then follow the foot-steps to Woodbury. Of course though, as you mention there are many different paths that can be taken. Perhaps Rick and Shane never leave Kings County for Atlanta and don't meet the other survivors. Maybe they get caught up in the city and don't make it out. Highly recommend checking out the comic series if you haven't!

I disagree with the shane thing, maybe by having Andrea he either sees that he has too much friction with Rick and leaves the group finding other survivors and basically making his own camp or he settles down and has a family of his own and him and Rick end up being co-leaders (like the council of season 4)

We met her in a Governor flashback. Now when it comes to Abraham, Rosita and Eugene it could still be possible for them to meet the main group. Remember when they met Glenn and Tara they were close to the prison. They could met when the group send people out on a run. Now it could be a toss up if they want to stay with the group because Abraham still believes Eugene is a scientist and their faith would've been like the Morales. Plus we would never know what happen to the Morales. Also no Noah, Gabriel, or Aaron and Bob doesn't die.

Yea....i'd say the only thing to worry about would still be the Governor. He didn't attack Rick's group just for vengeance, his groups whole m.o. is killing off other groups and taking their resources for their own. That won't change. The Governor did it to the army before meeting ricks group, he did it to his right hand man Martinez in his new group (during the Governor epsiodes in S4), and it's the reason he attcked the Prison (to his own demise) again. If they bump into the Governor, or anyone from his group, out on runs then they would always have a war on their hands.

I think Amy and Ed would still die, as Ed was slightly away from the group when he was eaten and Amy was bit before they would have time to react. also I think they would have went to Fort Benning where they would meet Negan's group like Morales did, and eventually through Negan they would meet Hilltop, Kingdom, Alexandria, Oceanside etc.

Amy and Ed still would have died. The walkers were a surprise attack there. It's possible that Amy would have survived, but Ed was alone and away in a tent. If Rick/Shane took care of it, even if not beating him half to death, he would have stayed away from the group out of his own embarrassment anyway. Why? Cause abusers are pussies and when true alpha male are around, they hide. They would have gone to Fort Benning, not the CDC, but I prefer the CDC route because there's really no prediction after that with this particular video type. Lol.

For me the characters would die in the CDC because no tank = no grenade = no escape = the group dies in the CDC so it’s only Daryl Merle so the story only focuses on both Dixon brothers Or If they escape and go to the farm and find Sophia Ed will beat up Carol leaving her in a coma or dead or depressed which could lead to Carol’s comic death Ed will get depressed probably try to end himself or blame Rick and his group try to find and join the governor with Darly and merle the governor will go to “Phil” and snitch on the group and the fight may still happen Years later Maggie has a boy with Glenn still alive Lori alive with Judith Shane and Andrea married with a kid Hershel and dale died of a sickness or old age Beth and Daryl get into a relationship There’s a herd of deadly hungry walkers which will rip survivors apart the walkers brake in killing new survivors apart merle is one of them he gets ripped apart in front of his baby brother I’ll add Lori to because she’s concerned about judith and carl’s safety same as Andrea Jim Beth Tyrese and some of the new survivors and we get the whispers it’s crazy Shane and Rick vs the whispers and alpha and beta a huge war for 2-3 years Rick and Shane win they’re no longer crazy but Shane leaves the group with his daughter later joining Negan’s group he blame Rick for the death of Andrea he tells the group about the prison and we get all out war with Glen getting killed in front of Maggie and his son and Daryl or Rick in front of their kids Shane sees what Negan did he redeems himself because of what happened to his best friend Carl has two eyes but one arm because he got bit in the prison raid by walkers. Years later after ricks and Glenn’s deaths Hershel judith Carl has PTSD from the deaths of their fathers the group meet Gabriel but a walker version of him Shane puts him down and bury him in his church group, somehow find Alexandria They join it they meet hill top ocean side and the kingdom abe is still alive he has a kid with Rosita and Eugene is with Denise and the group sees a traitor which is Ed (My phone is at 2% I’ll put a few more)

I would like to think that they would expand and explore more of the outside world to eventually exploring terminus seeing as it’s far but hearing there broadcast on the radio would get them curious to go out there and see what terminus is about, and they wouldn’t be experienced enough to realize how dangerous people are seeing as the governor wasn’t as much of a problem. so they would go there and a lot of the group gets eaten by the cannibals sparking a war between the two groups. They could be like the governor in this timeline.

This was a great story line but I would think that they would still meet michonne because she would still run into the helicopter probably she'd meet the governor and then probably should leave because andrea wasn't there to keep her and then maybe she'd run into the prison camp and then meet Rick maybe Rick and Lori had a child and Lori wasn't strong enough to deliver the child and survived and so maybe when Michonne came into the camp Lori was already dead and the story between Michonne and Rick blossom over time

I think Daryl/Merle run into Woodbury and the governor. I also think the prison group still fight the governor but with Daryl and Merle on woodburys side. I think there could be redemption for Daryl but not Merle I think Daryl rejoins the prison group and Merle still dies.

Rick and Shane would have butt heads somewhere in that timeline. Shane is more practical and is a survivor. Rick has heart and is a humanitarian. Rick would want to make decisions to help strangers that would have put his own people in direct danger. Shane would have warned him many times over that this is not smart, and being the hot head that he is, he would probably take a swing at Rick. One could end up dead, or, the group could split, as I am sure that there are people who would see it from Shane's perspective.

a problem i think is just how close you think rick and shane live to atlanta. they are part of kings county sheriffs department which is canonically pretty close to the alabama state line which is 200 miles/322KM from atlanta. so them going to atlanta then going back to kings county then back to atlanta doesnt seem like a great idea. my measurement is the closest route which is a interstate highway as opposed to the backroads rick took to atlanta in the show, so it will likely take even longer than that as if they take the interstate they are likely to encounter a lot of wreckage. it seems absolutely absurd to think they would leave lori and carl to do this. just as well i dont think its too likely they want them to leave the relative safety of a large group and go with them. either way, if they want guns it would be easier to find another police station and try to access an armory, but then its still uncertain on weather or not it would even have guns left.

What if Sophia lived ? I always imagined she'd be a badass. Carol being over protective over her during the prison seasons. Maybe Carol doesn't die till the Negan Lineup. THAT would be interesting. That starts Sophia's dark arc.

Not to nit pick, but how would they escape the cdc. Rick would have never ended up in that tank, so he never would have found the grenade they used to blow out the window. They would have been trapped inside because he couldn't open the door

I think Ed would have died by walker anyway because that was a ninja walker, even with the guns there's no reason to believe the woud've spotted it in the dark away from the main group. Also I find it hard to believe that Merle and Daryl woul be able to "raid" the camp with a focused Shane around.

One thing I think you over looked is Lori's loyalty. I'm pretty sure Lori would still have an affair with Shane. Leading to the eventual deadly conflict between Shane & Rick. Ending in Lori's death and Judith's birth.

@@Colecruzin maybe I'm reading into it too much 😭. But the marital problems they were having before the world ended made me feel like they were heading for divorce anyways. "Staying together for the kids" can only get you so far. Especially with the added apocalypse stress it wouldn't be a reach that they could split up or that Lori could cheat in a moment of weakness. Shane was also showing signs of being jealous of Rick's family life before the apocalypse as well & he could have been harboring feelings for Lori all along. It's all a theory though.... I miss early walking dead so much 😭

Im saying this without having watched the whole video, but this is how i would see things would happen, shane and rick would talk about how to do things and shane would set in stone how he wants to run things and if ricks on board or not, because as we seen in the cannon series shane was conflicted with his loss of lori and carl, and since lori wanted him to cancel his plan to leave, he felt stuck with the group while he was the only hardened one, anyways anyways in this what if timeline, either rick agrees to be realistic like shane or stay naive and that's when Shane would ask the group what they want, to seperate or make a group vote on idealistic leadership vs realistic and tough calls, merle and daryl would be with shane, since again if ricks there they would leave the atlanta store without merle taking lead and threatening with a gun anyway, i believe majority would win shanes vote so that's the way it is, they would go to fort Benning and not the useless cdc that blewup anyway, fort Benning was what Shane was saying to go to the whole time, i believe the heard next to hershels farm, thats where sophia got lost, wouldn't have happened, since they woulda went to fort Benning right away and not waste a whole day at the CDC, now my assumption is this fort Benning base shanes talking about is protected, could be a dead end or not, i dont think the show mentions bennins after season 2 and shanes death, so either they go to fort Benning or if its a dead end they all find the governors place, either live in his weird ruleset or rebel and take over or leave and find the prison, i believe it's either they live under his rules, or convince the people to rebel, either way they would live in the governor place and that's the end, they wouldn't meet hershel, and thats that

A solid video, although I think it's very likely someone from the prison would eventually discover and make contact with Terminus due to the "recruitment" campaign Terminus undergoes. There's also no reason to doubt that Daryl & Merle join up with the Governor's crew, who may also encounter Terminus.

One crucial thing you missed is that T-Dog probably would have died from an infection after getting his arm cut because Daryl and Merle would have took off with Merle's Clap medicine that saved T-Dogs life. Then the group would probably learn that everyone turns because T-Dog would turn after dying from a regular wound.

T Dog probably would’ve died right there by walkers though because Daryl was the one who saved him from being eaten by walkers. It’s just that you could make the argument that T Dog would’ve been closer to the group since Daryl isn’t there.

So the group would have never made it out of the CDC. Only way they made it out of the CDC is because of the grenade that Rick found in the tank (remember even gun fire could not break the glass). Since Rick never got surrounded in Atlanta there is no grenade to escape. Great video though!

i think they indeed stay at the prison but they encountre a group of negan they don't kill all of them and negan joins the story we then have negan killing off a member only this time he only kills one wich i think will be shane as he is a strong threat and a good friend of most ppl rick is absolutely devested by this and starts losing his leadership i personally think someone like hershell will take over together with glenn as they trust each other dale is not happy with this at all and he never really liked shane. so that being said he starts a small group off people who agree with him and they work for negan while still being in rick's group they give negan the information he needs and one day they attack the group killing most of the survivors aswell as torturing hershell by killing off his family including maggie before he is killed rick takes leadership again and they start the war against the saviors getting help of hiltop the kingdom and alexandria now they are bigger then the saviors and easily win rick also kills negan because he cared more about shane than abraham and glenn they lose a few people to the whisperers have to go with someone like lory daryll kills alfa and becomes the new leader of the whisperers.
