"Naming the island after himself" Alexander the Great: *Ah I see you're a man of culture as well* Also, Louis Antoine isn't from Bougainville. He was born in Paris, which was also where he died. He gets that from his father, Pierre-Yves de Bougainville. Fun fact, Louis actually managed to escape the Reign of Terror to Normandy where he retired. And when he returned to Paris, Napoleon made him a senator. He was also the explorer responsible for the first recorded settlement on the Falklands, Port Saint Louis. The French name he gave to the islands, Îles Malouines, is where the Spanish name came from

Exactly, that South American archipelago was named îles Malouines (islas Malvinas, in Spanish) after the French port city of Saint-Malo. Actually there is an island named after Bougainville there, although in English it's known as Lively Island, but in Spanish is known as Bougainville Island (isla Bougainville).

Bougainville didn't become part of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea because of distance. They were simply a part of German New Guinea, which the Aussies got as a result of WWI. This became the Territory of New Guinea, which was then combined with the Territory of Papua (which has been in Aussie/British hands since 1883) to form the Territory of Papua and New Guinea.

The mine alone when it was operating was producing 175,000 tonnes of copper and 18 tonnes of gold a year. At today's value, that is US$1.8b of copper + $1.3b of gold. The entire GDP of the Solomon islands is only $2b, though it has a population 2x that of Bougainville.

The Panguna Mine has been closed since the start of hostilities between the BRA and the PNG Defence Force/Police Force combined forces were sent there after the blowing up and sabotage of a power pylon. The mine has been largely abandoned and the equipment ground to a halt and rusting. However there is talk of China moving in after their independence to resume mine operations but that will depend on who is in power at the time.

Locals call it Bogenvil. Locals wouldn't have had a name for the whole country. In places like Australia indigenous people didn't see the whole thing as an entity. They knew the land of their tribal/language group. Same in Bougainville. People on the southern end of the main island probably didn't even know there were other islands to the north.

A sidenote - you surely meant 1768 NOT 1868 (seeing the style and clothing of the picture of de Bougainville, and I recalled he was a 18th century explorer) - I checked upon the facts quickly -> the existence of the island was already known in the 17th century (dutch sailors), more precisely described by english and french explorers in the 1760's, eventually credited and named after d. B ... it was awarded to Germany in 1886, according to the agreement between GB and Germany ... etc.

Yes, maybe they will find freedom. But we all know that from 1989 to 1991, 15 new countries appeared in the world, instead of one USSR. In some newly formed countries autonomies have appeared, which will probably also gain freedom. There are already unrecognized states. There are many such territories that may want freedom. Good video! The way you structured it, however, took the emphasis off of the mine. The mine was basically the reason for the conflict. Some groups gained from the mine, some groups lost (esp their fishing ground). THE question for the new Bougainville is - do we re-open the mine? And if they do, how do they ensure the money doesn't just disappear out of the country, like in PNG and Timor?

I always feel deeply disappointed in bigger nations governments when small regions vote to become independent, it typically means the bigger governments have failed, they haven’t cared for the land and its peoples, they probably stripped it of resources if any were found, and it’s probably an overall positive for it to be free, but if government like Australia’s had really cared about its northern islands and treated them better (something they nearly do to any of their land tbh), regions wouldn’t be needing to split up so often

Independence is usually for cultual/ethnical/geographical reasons, not only for economical ones. And island nations are so remote that it's almost impossible for them to be assimilated in other cultural identities. Usually those aren't rich countries, and people there spend the whole life in the same island/archipelago (with maybe some rare vacations for the upper middle class). People in different island have a completely different culture, and speak different languages.

They apparently have some autonomy already, but most State offices likely exist with funding from the central Papua New Guinea government. Hopefully they can make it work on their own

Good question! It's interesting how there are always a few key international issues that every country has to decide on. It reminds me of the Unaligned(?) movement during the Cold War, composed of countries which refused to take part in choosing one of the two sides
