Your honesty is so refreshing, Phoebe. It’s why we trust you. You’ve been open and honest and I think these two videos prove it. You gave it a chance. The hotel looked amazing and set up what seemed to be a good start. Maybe what you experienced really was “Dubai”. Hopefully, when you’re able go to it again, the advice I’ve already seen in the comments will help and, like Bangkok, Dubai will redeem itself. Curious-still glad you went? Even bad experiences I think are sometimes worth it. (Of course, it’s obvious you weren’t glad about the “small” tour-good move leaving that poop-show!) Thanks again for all your hard work and honesty. Travel is rewarding, but, when it’s your job, I can only imagine how hard and stressful it can be. Fear not-you still made two excellent and helpful videos! Ignore those that say otherwise. Rob PS: a quick story to uplift your spirits. Yesterday, I received my “Fibi” t-shirt and decided to immediately wear it. When I had to go the local grocery store, while waiting in line for a sub, a nice lady next to me asked what my shirt meant. After explaining, she logged into her KZbin account and subscribed! The shirt is very comfortable and arrived pretty quick. Glad you have them available and I’ll be sure to wear mine often!

Hi Phoebe! I’m from Dubai♥️ and let me just say your journey has been so raw and inspiring darling. Wish we had known you were coming, we would have recommended so many places. I studied tourism for this exact reason, the shallowness of what is shown and how unfortunately inadequate many tour companies are, starting with the Desert Safari’s that are in no way representing our Emirati culture. If there is a next time and want to experience the UAE and its warmth🧡 i would recommend places like Al Shandigha Museum (an old neighborhood dating back aprox 200 years), Maliha (just 30 minutes from Dubai), Souq Al Marar ( a traditional souq that is not touristy), Bait Al Banat Museum (a museum in a century old house that is all about the history of the women of the Emirates), Al Jawareh restaurant and Bin Eid Restaurant for traditional cuisine. Kabab Ustadi restaurant one of our hidden gems. A stay at one of Al Fihaidi Traditional Neighborhood’s Boutique hotels (XVA Gallery) and wander around all the boutique cafes and art galleries in that area. The list is so long🙏🏻 but i hope you do give it another chance. And cant wait for more destinations!

Hi Phoebe. It's been awhile since I commented on one of your videos. So sorry that this experience was so frustrating for you. I know the feeling of booking one of those garbage tourist trap tours that just wants you to spend money. I've done a few of those when I was younger and learned from them. Also, I always appreciate you being completely honest of your travels and being upfront when the experience sucks like this one. That's what makes your Vlogs so special that you want to be upfront, honest and vulnerable to your audience. I'm sure there is a "good" experience in Dubai out there and hope you'll be able to redeem the experience in the future.

Hey Phoebe, I can see why you’d get disappointed to have that kind of an experience. I have been living here 24 years and for me, the beauty of Dubai is in the cultural diversity. For me, it seeing and experiencing how the richest of the rich and poorest of the poor share the same city and the city has evolved to have its own tiny community spheres. You go to Bur Dubai at Diwali and you’ll find yourself in India, you go to Satwa or Riga during a Filipino festival and you find yourself in the Philippines. You walk into Waitrose and you find a kilo of Apples for 25 AED. You walk into the fruits and vegetables markets and you get a glimpse of how the not so rich are able to afford a great quality of life. And through this, the city’s culture of co-existence, tolerance and entrepreneurship comes from. The city’s culture of Karak tea, cafeterias and shawarmas is also something to explore. If you’re planning on coming here next, I’d love to take you around and help you explore the different pockets of the city. And no I’m not a travel agent trying to sell you my services. Just wanted to share my views ✌🏻

I’ve only been there once, but absolutely loved it but Dubai isn’t for everyone. I do have to say choosing the right guides is definitely a task, as there are lot of bad ones. When I travelled to Dubai in 2022, they way I like to see the sites, I pick out things that are fun and memorable Like - going down a glass slide, going up the tallest tower in the world, going to the water park, going on a speed boat tour and or jet skiing seeing the sites, quad biking in the desert was so much fun. I see Dubai more as architecture, and lavish life than culture. I can’t wait to go back to Dubai, experience what they have to offer. Phoebe I love to watch your videos, as you show pure and depth and emotion to your videos that more people can relate to. Can’t wait to watch ur next video Phil

We were in UAE in March this year, booked a Gulf cruise where we were cruising overnight and spent 7 days in different destinations. I rented for us cars with drivers via Viator. Abu Dhabi, Khasab (Oman - this was an amazing traditional boat tour) and the dune bashing in Dubai were fantastic. At the second Dubai day tour where we requested specific things, they didn't get for us our requested tickets (they sold us expired tickets for a several hundreds of dollars!!!), and the company was SO rude - yes, we got the money back. Seeing your video - (I am so sorry and also glad that you just decided to do what is best for you and enjoy the moment) - we should have just got out of there and gone to the mall, I'm sure it would have been much nicer experience. Thank you for your honest review.

Just take the Big Bus Tour next time, you don't have a time limit at a stop, you can hop on to the next bus if you want. They also have a guide and an audio guide The above is a good strategy for places that have a big bus tour. Day 1 : Summary Big Bus tour, figure out which places you want to visit again. Day 2 onwards : divide the places you liked on day 1 for a deep dive.

Hi Phoebe, thanks for being so authentic about your experience. It looked like the tour was just about getting your money, and made Dubai look so materialistic. It reminds me of the $99 tours in China, where they force you into factories to buy stuff and pressure you to pay their guides tips, all for 5 min photo stops. Yes, that’s how they make back their money, but it really ruins the experience. Never been to Dubai, but hopefully finding the right guides would show you what it truly has to offer. And if it doesn’t, that’s okay too. Glad you were able to salvage it somewhat at the end!

Been to Dubai and never going back. It's overrated and outright boring. There's no culture, no hospitality food's not great and too artificial. It's a place only for transiting if you're travelling with Emirates, that's pretty much it. The same can be said for Qatar as well.

Hello Phoebe, thank you for your honesty about Dubai. I am a local from Dubai, and I want to share that the city may not be everyone's cup of tea, especially for those who enjoy exploring culture and strolling through streets. Dubai seems to cater more to luxury seekers who are inclined towards high-end vacations, booking 5-star hotels, indulging in shopping sprees, relaxing on the beach, and attending pool parties. Nevertheless, there is an array of adventures to experience, such as Dubai Parks, the Flower Park, Dubai Eye, JBR, Motiongate, IMG, Dubai Design, escape rooms, and many more. I couldn't list them all here, but there's certainly a diverse range of activities for those interested. Despite its focus on luxury, I hope you consider visiting Dubai again and have a delightful experience. I'm more than happy to assist you in discovering the city's hidden gems. Take care!

We split our time between downtown (Dubai mall area) and the marina area which we loved. There is an element of just accepting it for what it is but we also got lucky and booked a smallish tour with a local guide who took us to old town and across to the gold market, at no point did we feel like we were being forced to buy things. We also got lucky with our dessert experience by the sounds of it. 100% recommend Atlantis if you like water parks and the indoor snow experience.

Yep, had a similar experience in Dubai with a tour company.. Myself and one of the 'Managers' on the phone ended up in a yelling match, which is super unlike me.. I tell you the thing that added salt to the experience, once it was all over, an 'escalation manager' contacted myself on whatsapp to 'discuss our experience' at no point did he say, well I am sorry for your experience.. Instead he proceeded to blame our driver, pretty much calling him of low education and stupid.. The driver was the only one that was trying to help.. He couldn't do anything about the problem, but at least he was trying to fix the problem.

lol I'm going to suggest that you remember this episode's textile shop when you book any tour if you go to Cairo. The one thing that has changed from then to now, the used to show you the children rapidly churning out the rugs, now the showrooms only have 1 or 2 people slowly working the loom - and then quickly on to the selling floor.

That's a bummer about the tour group, I always tend to stay away from those type touristy tours. As for Dubai, I think it's one of those places where you'll either enjoy it or you don't. It's such a superficial place that some people will like and some will hate. I've been there a couple of times and I had a fun time. But I was with a significant other, so maybe for your next trip back, if you're going back to Dubai, have someone with you that you can have a good time with. 🙂

Hey Phoebe, I see where you are coming from and will try to write something that may help you or others visiting this place: As a norwegian, the need for sunshine during the winter is dire, so an easy direct flight to the UAE has been the rescue for us a couple of times. I love it for the amazing local middle eastern cuisine (you seem to have missed this part), the safety I feel not having to worry about theft, and the cleanliness. And you can rely on the sunshine to be present like no place else this time of year. It is a perfect place for sun and relaxation. Now with that said, there are some experiences there that you can do when you get bored at the beach. Just to have mentioned it: One of my absolutely favorite places in the world can be found here: the Telal Al Ain resort. It is in the middle of the desert with gazelles running around it is the ultimate peaceful haven. I. Love. It. Other faves in Dubai: Abra rides and Al Seef old town Arabian tea house there for food (Avoid the gold souks, it is like you said) The Green Planet (indoor rainforest no cage zoo) And the Aquaventure waterpark is ridiculously fun. In Abu Dhabi we visited the Mosque and felt it was soulless, but really enjoyed other places like: Qasr al Hosn (very old historical building surrounded by skyscrapers, amazing evening ambiance and lots of history to read and dive into) The Louvre museum inside and outside by the sea with the drone shows One thing that fascinates me about UAE is that they make the unthinkable happen. Dream it, it is there. As a vegetarian I didn't think I would be able to have a fully vegetarian michelin fine dining experience, until I got to visit Avatara there, an indian vegetarian 16 course experience. It was out of this world and I will never forget it. Also visiting UAE during ramadan was interesting. Going to the Iftar banquets after sunset was a fantastic experience, first listening to the prayer calls while the streets are completely quiet, and suddenly after locals and foreigners come together and have amazing food. In conclusion: Some places really do lack soul, I agree. But it is not many other places I feel safe to explore a bit of the Middle Eastern culture, and you -can- find it here. Hope this helps for you or anyone else reading.

I think Dubai is very materialistic, really nothing to do but to lay on the beach, and see the aquarium and the buildings. It wasn’t my favorite trip when I visited.

Hi Phoebe, I lived in Dubai for 8 yrs before moving to Sydney. Try exploring spice souk, gold souk, JBR area, Dubai Creek & Yacht Club dining areas, Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Corniche Beach. There are food tours too happening around Deira in old downtown Dubai.

I visited Dubai once without knowing it was Ramadan. Lol. I couldn’t even drink water during the stifling hot day out in the open. But that mistake was on me. Otherwise I treated Dubai like the big amusement park that is was. I did manage a somewhat authentic moment down at Dubai Creek. Can’t hit sixes all the time with travel, but your video still shines! Cheers!

Have lived in the Middle East for 8 years. Some of them (or most of them) don't care what you said or if they understood you. They only care about what they say and what they think of it. Not the best place for tourists. Place is awesome but people? Not yet. They're still learning. Doing it your own way is much better I'd say.

I understand that it can be hard to get around in the beginning, but it seems to me that your trip should have been better planned. In Dubai you can find everything from old historical places to modern luxurious ones, and all kinds of activities. You just need to make sure to do your research.

Dubai is artificial, and it has another nickname not many aware of "fake city", that's many of my previous colleagues and friends describe it. It's like a giant theme parks. Modern, but lacks real identity, culture and charm.

Honest reactions are the best. They are genuine , but it's also good to see locals posting here on the good places to visit. These types of tours where they take you to souvenir shop after souvenir shop whilst only spending a short time at the actual destinations most westerners want to visit can be quite common in certain countries. Some 13yrs ago, my parents, brother and I did tours in China that seemed very similar to your experience on this Dubai tour. Though, given we were on an 8 day tour that cost like AU$40 per person (that's for the whole tour, NOT a daily rate) and I believe it was subsidised by the Chinese Government to help grow the tourism industry, we just put up with it. I wouldn't settle for such a tour if I paid market price.

Look at you! You have transformed into a seasoned traveller lol! Yeah the sentiments are similar, i find dxb to be a place full of bling and no soul, hot (summer for me) and a nightmare for pedestrians. Totally cracked at the DinTaiFeng part though and yep, spot on! Anyway, really love the video for the candid raw emotions, disagreements with locals (that travellers do face but seldom talk about) and if anything i'd say its one of your better vids. When it comes to your level, id say Sharjah trumps Abu Dhabi trumps Dubai. Think SF vs NYC vs Vegas... mideast edition. Keep it up, try their choco-dates & buy some sidr honey!

Rule of thumb for me is to use public transportation to really experience the vibe of the country. Deira and Bur Dubai is the old style vibe. From there you can catch the Abrars that will take you to the souks. Also a must do is the desert safari in the evening. Burj Khalifa side of Dubai is mainly designer label stores and major franchises.

I'm sorry you had a bad time in Dubai. It actually is a wonderful place with so much to see and do. You really should never do any tours as they will just take you to shopping malls and beaches. If you are ever back here or if you want to go to Abu Dhabi let us know we will show you around and you will quickly change your mind about UAE :) Dubai has unless things to do free or paid. We could easily give you a 2-week itinerary and you would still not see everything here.

Hiya! I didn't like Dubai either. Out of all places I've visited the 3 worst places were Hurghada, New York and Dubai. Dubai is a city where everything is big, so even a small group tour would be a lot of people. Also the city isn't thought through. For example, as a pedestrian you have to walk 5km to get to places which would be like 200m by car, just because you can't cross a road. Abu Dhabi for example is much more mature. I liked the Yas Waterpark and the Ferrari World theme park. I'm glad you show your honest opinion. It makes you a real person and that's the reason I am still following you after years. You made me laugh at 5:49 when John Travolta appeared 🤣. I am glad you enjoyed your fried rice. It's one of my favourites too. Especially the way it's made in the Caribbean. Whenever you visit a Caribbean island, you'll have to try Caribbean Fried Rice! I think there's nothing 'authentic' of Dubai. To me it feels like they scrambled people from Pakistan and India to live there, they scrambled the big chains to be there and make it work. It seems like they haven't thought of some sort of plan. I'm always intrigued by fish and birds, I could watch it for hours as well. Worst experience I had in Dubai was celebrating NYE. First of all I was traveling with a friend, and all males were put into a sand area far away from the Burj Khalifa. Women and kids were put close in front of the Burj Khalifa. Then when it was over, everyone rushed into the metro. If you wanted to travel with the metro within the first 2-3 hours after midnight there's a big chance you'd die because of just too much people. You literally feel trapped. I did like the waterpark at Jumeirah though. Thank you for sharing your honest opinion about Dubai. I really appreciate it. Hopefully you'll have better weeks of traveling ahead 🤙

It was so wrong on so many levels 😅 I wrote a message to you on Instagram. If you are here next time, let me know. I'm happy to properly introduce you to Dubai and Abu Dhabi- the culture, the food, the places. @daryarama9 ай бұрын
@@hannesRSA well, as always, don't believe everything you see on social media. Or the cringe "reality TV" about Dubai 😬- majority of people here are normal middle class workers or business people that work hard for the money they earn. The influence of Islam is actually a good thing which keeps the place safer than anywhere in the world. But they are also very tolerant to any religion people follow- we have churches, synagogues, temples beside mosques. People celebrate Christmas, Diwali, etc in an open manner, even locals enjoy meeting Santa 😄 Very chill place. Complex place too as you have so many nationalities. You learn a lot just by being exposed to all that. Can find anything by your interest, preference, price range. When I moved here two decades back, I started with a salary of 350$ (accommodation was provided from employer) and not only I was saving, but also sending home to my parents home. That's what I love- you can live on 1k per month and on 50k - you'll find everything for everyone. Perfect? No place is perfect. Depends on what you consider pluses or minuses (pros and cons), but for me personally- pros overweight by the long shot. Safe? So far the safest place to raise kids and be a woman. Many people who ever lived here and got used to the safety, either miss the place or just coming back here😄

I kind of got the impression that Dubai is built for the tourism.. its only been like a decade or 2 of Dubai becoming a thing.. before that it was not much at all. To me it comes across as a place to show off the best of the best in the world because they just throw money at everything. Didnt think there'd be much culture or history behind it

Hello, Phoebe, Hope this message finds you well. We sent a comment to you here but forever reason it did not post. Anyway, We had mixed feelings of Dubai the first time we travel there. Dubai is a international country that attracts tourists and workers from all over the world. Very transient. It's hard to connect with true natives that can show you the history and culture of the traditions. It's obvious that the tour operator new nothing or didn't want to. Harriet and I gave it a second chance and came away with wonderful memories. We got to know the Emirati Culture in so many ways, The hospitality , The food, The history, The people etc. from locals. Phoebe, do not beat up on yourself. You deserve better treatment. You tell it like it is. Harriet and I learned many years ago not to solely rely on touring bus companies . If you truly want to know where locals go, (events , festivals etc. ) checkout the local newspaper and have the concierge at your hotel translate it into English as to what is happening there. We have been longtime subscribers of your channel from the beginning. You are a beautiful soul who is as honest and sincere as they come. Sending you much love ❤ from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki

I would have told you to go to the gold, spice, and fabric souks if you were looking for some culture. You could have done the little boat trip across the river to do both parts of old Dubai. It's not a full day's worth of stuff but it is neat to see how the old Dubai used to be. Just be warned that people will try to sell you stuff.

You'll probably have a better experience if you have a local resident show you around instead of booking tours. It's the tour that messed up your experience. I hope you give Dubai another chance. I've lived there for two years and I still come back whenever I have the chance. It's not for everyone, I know. But if you venture away from the touristy places, you'll love it for sure.

@@travelforphoebe I'm not sure if you've tried Airbnb Experience. That's where I usually book local guides. It's better than booking through tour agencies. I've used it in Morocco, Thailand, and many other places. So far, it worked well for me. I'm also a solo female traveller and prefer to travel independently. Tour groups don't appeal to me.
