It is the worst year in decades. Very few people were alive for WWII or the great depression. So for most of us, we have nothing to compare it to. Over a million deaths worldwide and that is 100% on the low end as many nations are underreporting. Add on to that the economic impact and this will go down as the worst year for billions of people.
@asha47363 жыл бұрын
It's all relative- For many people, particularly in the West, the emergence of Covid-19 and the ensuing economic uncertainty, societal fractures, political weirdness etc. all within the first few months of the year (not to mention the threat of nuclear war with Iran/USA/North Korea in January alone!) has been utterly incomprehensible. Add in the fear of Covid and the way we get our global news so instantly now, in some ways, it really is the worst for our psyches. We're being bombarded with distressing info everywhere we turn and to say "The worst year ever!" is hyperbole for sure, to us en masse around the world, it really can FEEL like this is about as bad as it could get.

As a biologist, I think that this "worst lead to something better" principle also applies to some aspects of evolution. For example, we contain ancient "viruses" in our DNA (called transposons) which have inserted themselves millions of years ago. Although these transposons have and still can mess up our DNA by breaking chromosomes and destroying genes they also gave us additional DNA sequences which were used to drive evolution (I just made a video about that). Without these ancient "viruses" for example we would have not able to make placentas meaning that dogs, cats or us could not exist today. Interesting principle I think!

The underlying point of this video is: history shows that every time there was a downturn or a catastrophe, things eventually turned better. I know this is what people want to hear now but that is the real issue: using history for propaganda. There is no evidence that things will be so much better as soon as the pandemic is over, and a real overcoming of the pandemic may require a complete revolution in our ways of living (not necessarily a bad thing).
@seagecko3 жыл бұрын
The role of this pandemic is to dilute humanity, thus, hypothetically, allowing the survivors to rebuild with enough resources for all. We definitely need to review our existence and reinvent to rebuild.

That means people who put money into SS, unlike the first generation, won't see a dime for their efforts. Did you know FDR had the government pay farmers to not produce anything? That resulted in increased food prices, during the great depression of all times, and of course also cost the jobs of many farm hands and migrant workers. His tax hikes, price fixing, and labor laws also bankrupted numerous businesses, and also stiffled investment in private enterprise. After this time in history, I think it will be a golden after math. One major change will be the way folks work. Many of those who are working from home now will choose to continue to do so. Suggestion: What was it really like to be a hippie in the sixties through the seventies? Was it all just peasant shirts and flower power?
@loriyamaoka74983 жыл бұрын
For the most part, yes.✌

A request for content here. As a lawyer, now retired, I've long been interested in the implementation and consequences of the adoption by Great Britain and its colonies of the Gregorian calendar during the eighteenth century. I've read that ten days or so of that year were just leapfrogged over, just skipped for official purposes. How weird was that? How were contracts and land leases handled? Prison sentences? Timing of the sabbath day? Please consider this topic for your videos. Thanks!

Funny part about FDR is that economics studies show that he and his New Deal pretty much prolonged the depression by multiple years.

Love your videos! Maybe a video about Peter the Great would be cool? He sure had quite a few weird facts about him.

Damn, this is soo eurocentric. Out of the 11 different events, only one wasn't in Europe or the US. Seriously you guys, try to add some variation. I mean, you didn't even mention the late bronze age collapse, *the worst event in human history* . It gave way to the neo Assyrian empire and the classical era of Greece. But I forgot, it didn't happen in western Europe, sorry.

Universal healthcare in the UK began in Wales as early as 1890.

Good God, the United States is 100 years behind Europe in health care. Maybe this horrible disaster will bring change.

Well if people today stop being overly sensitive to everything we might pull through our hardship ..and we need to be united not divided to actually be successful

It would be nice if humanity could learn from history and actually prevent preventable pandemics.

It would be nice if you learned that pandemics cannot be prevented. They simply have to run their course.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the coronavirus pandemic made the United States adopt Universal Healthcare, like the Spanish Flu did for Europe?? That is one good thing that could come out of this disaster.

The UK NHS is largely born of the Miner's Welfare Societies, in particular the one in Tredegar, South Wakes, home of the great Nye Bevan. It always intrigues me as to why US miners didn't evolve a similar system into a state or federal model.
