There is an honest God out there, and he's pissed off with all phony religiosity. Imagine being an ancient Jew and hearing God's prophet Isaiah saying this: “These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit, and who tremble at my word. But whoever sacrifices a bull is like one who kills a person, and whoever offers a lamb is like one who breaks a dog’s neck; whoever makes a grain offering is like one who presents pig’s blood, and whoever burns memorial incense is like one who worships an idol. They have chosen their own ways, and they delight in their abominations; so I also will choose harsh treatment for them and will bring on them what they dread. For when I called, no one answered, when I spoke, no one listened. They did evil in my sight and chose what displeases me.” (Isaiah 66: 2b-4)

I grew up in a semi devout Irish Catholic family in a predominantly Irish and Italian neighborhood . My grandma on my moms side I was extremely close with and she went to church almost every day. They helped her find a new apartment near the church that was a million times better in neighborhood (she was taking a 45 min ride on public transport to get to church every day) , a fraction of the cost (it was specifically for older people on fixed incomes), and in center city (she never got a license in her life). Her best friend was a nun, SisterAgnes. Going to Catholic school growing up it was so cool at the time (like 10) to see this nun who cursed, was funny, and not held above but rather just a hilarious friend of my grandma. On the other hand, at my grade school (Pre K to 8th) there was a priest in charge, Monsignor Heron. He was a very aloof person and not friendly in the slightest. He had a Benz and a BMW. When being ordained a nun must give up any and all money, properly, etc “vow of poverty “, priests do not. Turns out when I was like 12 he passed away from cancer. They held an emergency meeting in the church a few weeks later and asked every parishioner to come. Turned out (surprise!😏) the Monsignor used the church and school money as his own and bought numerous luxury vehicles, luxury beachfront condo in Hawaii, condo in Vail for skiing, and it goes on. The meeting wasn’t to apologize. The meeting was basically a “we may have to close the school and who knows what will happen to the children...” type guilt trip and wanted everyone to pay back to cover all of his debts while continuing to pay the mandatory amount to send kids to school .

It's very very important to remember that the midieval times were a time of historical illiteracy. The vast VAST majority of our literature and first hand accounts of the time were written by the rich and the wealthy who were under a tighter scrutiny by the church than the average person. Not that the average joe wasn't entirely free from the church's power but he was much less watched and observed by it and much more free to be skeptical of the church's claimed authority over the hereafter. Martin Luther's problems with the practices of the church were hardly brand new in thought, the difference is he came from within it.

"does guilt play a part in your everyday obedience?" you have no idea how much a toxic household impacted me (and continues to give me identity crises) and my view on life altogether. guess the church's been a really good father of guilt-tripping.

It's two different things I hear about gargoyles, either they're supposed to be guardians/scare away evil spirits or they're supposed to be images of demons to scare people into churchgoing. I don't know if both are somehow true or what. Gargoyles might make a decent topic for a video. Just saying.

4:48 what evidence is there for a “Pardon in Advance” for sins you are about to commit? The Catholic Church is extremely well known for condemning the sin of presumption, and requiring everyone not to sin or plan to sin, as evidenced by the very first topic of the danger of damnation. Obviously the Catholic Church doesn’t do that now, so when did it stop if it ever happened? If there’s no evidence of this I’m pretty sure this is false information.

*I once saw a statue of Mother Mary cry Blood.* Now I am an atheist, and began being one very early on despite being raised in a religious area. (One thing lead to another.) But I swear, somewhere back when I was 9 years old, I saw a statue about half my size begin crying blood. Course I was petrified but I just wanted to throw this out there. It was so creepy. We weren’t even in a church. 🤦‍♀️

"The Divine Commedy was just an excuse for the author to blow off steam at hi enemies." Man, this is the most ignorant phrase an Italian can heard during his life. La Divina Commedia is an international masterpiece comparable to The Odissey. It is written in a wonderful way, and it describes the society and the important people of that time. It was not used to scare people at all, cause people during the middle ages already knew about the punishments of hell and purgatory. The poem is rated as a masterpiece not just by Italians, but by all the critics around Europe and other countries. Also Dante never wrote about The mouth of hell, that's in your fantasies. You can't criticize without knowing or reading the poem man.

Albe Beltrami I’m glad to see someone else sees how ignorant this video is. It’s sad to see a history channel be so dismissive of masterworks just because they don’t match the “Enlightenment” or modern scientific worldview. Dante communicated deeply beautiful personal and spiritual truths, in a work which united ancient Jewish tradition with Greco-Roman mythology and Renaissance Humanism... Yet people are just so dismissive of “stupid medieval people.”

That wasn't even a criticism of the poem though. He was just saying Dante channelled some of his frustrations into his writing. Which every artist does. And that the church capitalized on his work to reenforce their narrative. He said nothing bad about the work at all. I think you may have just misunderstood his point.

Love the style of the show, the length and quality of the video and content, and to add to some of the comments...your voice is perfect for the show. It is rare to get all of these qualities in one show. I look forward to every new episode. Would it be possible for you to cover Roger Williams (created the state of RI and Providence Plantations?) I am obsessed with his historical rebelliousness from the church and kindness to the natives going so far as to learn their language. His choices paid off when he was forced to flee from Salem and Massachusetts bay colony with lots of help from natives in Mass and RI. Thank you for what you do!

I love your channel. The way you display information is constant, so even people who have attention problems can retain this information. It's great. On your last video I recommended doing one on Assyria, ancient Assyria. They had a constitution, similar to sumeria, except the punishments were absolutely brutal, and I figured you would have a good time doing it. Sorry I didn't expound last time. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assyrian_law I would love to see a video about Assyria.

If you are christian... like it or not, you support everything that happened in the past to poor brainwashed people. For ex. If you declare yourself as a Nazi and say: "oh I have guilt for what previous nazis have done".... It doesnt matter because you are still carrying on their legacy and continue the problem of appropriating religious abuse. People are what make up religious groups. Less followers mean less atrocities that are gonna happen. Think about how many people are murdered and raped from the church. Also dont say there is a true Christian. The book is vague enough to allow this control. Every church is different but that's what makes them all the same. They have to change their views to control people in ANY way possible. Remember. History repeats itself.
