Matt, we’re as giddy to have you here as you appeared to be here! Definitely make sure to do a winter tour back in Michigan. I always ask myself “how do those Texans do it in that crazy heat all day but you’ll be saying the similar things when you see us melting ice off lumber before we make our cuts!” As a 3rd generation builder I can tell you our weather will test your workmanship and your warranty. Especially the lake effect weather. Shout out to these 2 quality builders featured on this clip. Keep up the good work guys. See you in January!!!

I’m from Michigan too. When they built in our neighborhood I was surprised they only used 2x4 walls with no exterior insulation.

Bought a house in Shelby last year..moved here from Chicago… started rehabbing the house couple months ago… very poor quality build, and as I am seeing around 90% of the houses are like this . Of course I have seen better not far from here but we talking over a million dollars houses. I really like Michigan but very disappointed construction wise

Welcome to Michigan! We've got lots of great farm land, amazing coastal views, 4 season climate, and more. People forget Michigan sometimes, but we have a ton to offer. I'll also point out that there are a large number of multi-millionaires buying and building out small towns to live and vacation in all over the state. I'd expect they know a thing or two. 😁😁

Matt, Thank you for doing a Michigan video. I'm right now planning with my wife where we will retire, we love the lakes of Michigan for the summer and are thinking of either Texas or Florida for winter. The plan is to have two small homes in each location and to go between them.

I live in Michigan. The weather has ADD for sure. It's never 'nice' for long. You might get a couple days in a row, but generally it's hot or freezing, rain, sleet, snow, ice, high wind, humidity, always something. And the mosquitoes will suck all your blood. lol That said, we don't have super hazardous weather often and where I am, the worst of the storms generally go above or below us rather than ON us. It's a nice lil niche I'm in here in Kalamazoo. Still, for a nice 65-74 day, light breeze with no rain or high humidity...not too often. Which sucks because that means you don't have the windows open often to air the house out. A house here needs to be super sturdy with excellent insulation, careful attention to the roof line and outdoor steps so icicles aren't impaling your head when you walk out the door and you aren't falling on your arse. Large trees shouldn't be near the house, and you have to make sure vents are above the snow and not iced over. Property drainage is also pivotal to a dry house and basement. Basement is pivotal in case of tornadoes. Oh, and a good generator for when the power invariably goes out, sometimes for a week even or solar. Solar is better off on the ground than the roof due to lots of snow up there for a long time. You want to be able to sweep the panels off easily. If you take care of all that, you're good, it's an awesome place to live! A screened in porch is crucial if you want to sit outside at all.

Very impressive! You definitely needed to spend more time at Paul Mauer! There was so much to see. Sidenote: In Minnesota, North Dakota, and Nebraska, forced air ducts are kept low on the wall, not high. As you know hot air rises and we heat more than cool.

Zip and Tyvek? wouldnt that cause issues? like having zip and a VB inside?
@ryanlovell2440
@ryanlovell2440 Жыл бұрын
Tyvek over the top of Zip is actually quite common. Tyvek is being used as the main moisture barrier and allows builders to properly integrate their WRB with their flashing tape, specifically at heads of windows and doors. The building science belief is based on redundancy and physics as a longer term moisture management solution than chemistry/ tape adhesion.

Of course you saw some cool stuff, it’s one of the most expensive markets in the state, literally the rich people’s playground. My sister lives there and we’ve vacationed there many times over the years. The state government is getting pretty messed up and the taxes keep getting worse and worse though still better than many other states. I left after retiring because the weather sucks for about 5 to 6 months of the year and the state decided several years ago that they needed to take part of everyone’s pension to give the businesses a tax cut.

We bought a Dodge Caravan new, and kept it for 19 years. It developed transmission issues, so bought a new one. Now I have two cars in retirement, but only really need one. I really need to sell one of them. One is a hybrid which I almost never put gas in, the other one is bigger, and I use for buying larger hardware (plywood, pipes, and similar). I should get rid of the hybrid, but it's a more fun car. Sigh
