As a barca fan, I clowned courtois when he got embarrassed by messi whilst he was still at chelsea. But he has defo redeemed himself since joining madrid. . Personally I think hes been the best gk in the world since 19/20 when he singlehandedly carried that real madrid team to la liga. No ronaldo, bale was being phased out, benzema wasnt the player he is today, etc. I still have PTSD thinking back to on his performances that saved real madrid in so many games back then. What a legend.

The caption is not him playing as a defender. The "mine for talent" shirt was made by the club prior to the final game of the 10/11 season in which we were playing for the title. After we took the title, fans and players celebrated on the pitch and all players, including him as a goalkeeper, wore the shirt to celebrate a title won with a team full of academy graduates. As we are a coal miners team, the term "mine for talent" was a reference to the performance and our heritage. Never knew he played as a defender, probably prior to playing for Genk tbh. I did know he played volleyball for a long time.

I don’t really like the idea of best goalkeeper. It’s a relatively easy position compared to say forwards, which is why there are so many good keepers that are interchangeable. De gea, Emerson, neuer, donnarumma, navas, Allison. Meanwhile there’s a clear list of best forwards in the world.

Not easy at all. Attackers get fed and rarely do all the work themselves. And they „only“ have to be good at a few things in comparison. For a top gk, u need reflexes, team (defense) command, play initiation, positioning, predictive ability (so very high game sense) and more. I.e, Nowadays, u also need to have a defenders skill set for sweeping. Additionally, there’s no one to fix your mistakes, while u always have to deal with the mistakes made in front of u and then often get the blame when u can’t. A goalkeeper will be considered a failure for 1 or 2 mistakes, a striker a success for 1 goal. Oh, and then there’s penalties as a reward if u do u your job right in knock out games while ur team doesent. So beyond the breadth of abilities top tier GK need to have, the psychological pressure is by far the most demanding of any position. It just so happens to be that u don’t actually notice when a gk exceeds to the same degree u will notice with even a mediocre striker.
