Bike thefts have been on the increase for some time now.
One thing I've wondered for a while is how do they start them when they're fitted with an immobiliser, surly this tech will stop a scumbag starting your pride and joy without a key, unfortunately, this isn't the case and the reality is, it's much easier than you'd like to think.

@@MercerVisualProductions As much as i hate to say it, i don't think Yamaha will do anything, they're not going to admit any liability as it'll leave them wide open for any claims on other bikes,All bike should be fitted with a CAT one immobilizer as standard, bikes are easy to nick as we all know,so if the factory fit one it should work as intended, this is an epic fail by Yamaha. One thing i will add, to help stop the opportunist thief, find out where your fuel pump relay is and remove it! i can't see them having on of those handy to start your bike and ride off.Hope to catch you at Rivi sometime.

To be honest if your bike doesn't have a GPS tracker fitted then you never had it in the first place. No amount of locks will keep them safe in a public place but at least you can find it with a tracker. I've had 4 bikes stolen over a few years and I've recovered all 4. The trackers I use also have a remote engine cutoff so once I have the bike in sight I can disable the engine( important note not to disable the engine until you can see the bike as the scroats will tear it apart or wreck it if it won't run).

I had my first MT10 stolen a year and a day after buying it brand new. They came into my works 'secure' carpark by giving a bullshit name, then 3 lads lifted it into the van, then pretty much drove through the barrier to get out. Its not just a light switch though, you should do an update on this. The immobiliser defeat units can be bought online and plugged in. The switch is purely for switching the ignition on. They pull the wires off the back of the ignition unit and wire to the switch. Tidier than smashing the lock out

This isn’t how your bike is started believe me. That’s just a switch as your bike has been hotwired. If you leave the wires dangling around and they touch the frame it will fuse the bike. Your bike has been started via an immobiliser emulator this plugs onto your chip reader (the ring around the ignition). They plug a device onto this and then Hotwire it like they used to do back in the 80/90’s. that shitty diy home style switch has been fitted for convenience for the thief to switch the bike on/off instead off joining/undoing the wires every time. Mines was taken the same way the device is £25 off fleabay

To start any mt’s above the 125 fitted with an immobliser you have to buy a emulator which bypasses the ecu unit and when you plug it in where the immobliser is and then you start it by hotwiring but iff you don’t have the emulator the bike just keeps keeps ticking over because it has no power to the bike because the ecu is blocking power to get the engine

I've heard people talk about installing one on their bike but wondered why since after thieves pick it up, carry it away to their hang out they can remove it. How about a big air bag in the seat that goes off at 100 mph and fires their asses up in the air if the fob is not present. Ha ha ha.

I don't know a lot about bikes as I have only been riding for a year, would it not be possible for the manufacturers to make it easy for the owner to have easy access to the ecu, so as they can unclip it and take it with them. Euro 4 saw to it that all bikes made from 2017 had to have an immobiliser among other things (such as ABS and ODB2). This was an additional cost so Yamaha made an immobiliser (YISS) that met minimum standard just to meet Euro 4 compliance as cheaply as possible. In other countries outside of Europe, as seen in the States, the MT/FZ10 doesn't come with the YISS. I think this evidences Yamaha are not thinking about security but merely compliance and have some the bare minimum to meet this.

I wish the immobilizer on my bike was so easy to bypass. Instead, a fault in the electrics somewhere has meant that I can't start the bike, and have been off the road for a few months. Mine works by the ECU reading a code in the RFID within the key. No code from the key, and the ECU won;t allow the bike to start. The ECU would need to be hacked to bypass it, as far as I know (and I don;t know much on this issue). Factory immobilisers are just simple add-ons that are easy to bypass. They are designed to detect the RFID chip in the key, the problem is they are not integrated very well, it should be controlled by anti tamper circuits in the ECU. It wouldn't be difficult to implement at a factory level but what that means is that you can't re-flash or replace the ECU with a new one without having access to factory unlock codes which of course means these codes will be targeted by thieves. It should be possible to create anti tamper ECU's with built in GPS and tracking data which sends a signal to a central location when it detects unauthorized activity, this could also allow the vehicle to be shut down remotely. There are areas in the UK now where you can't get insurance on a motorbike if you don't have a secure garage to keep it in, I have even spoken to people who don't use simple disc locks or chain their bikes when leaving them in a supermarket car park because they say they will just claim on the insurance if it gets nicked !

It's tough for bike manufacturers to keep up with build and tech that cars have, many cars still now can be hot wired, but people break into houses or jack people on the street to get high end motors. If bikes were as easy to protect from hot wiring they'd do it, thieves will just then break in or jack people more if that's the only way to get high end bikes. You'll never fully stop or get around it, people need to do more to protect their own and others property, no neighbours came out in force to stop them, that's disgusting. But how do we change that? the government needs to give us more power and therefore confidence to protect our own and others property and each other without being prosecuted.

This is bonkers! So essentially the USP of "Factory fitted immobiliser" isnt worth more than a trip to b&q? Crazy!

Sadly all it takes is knowledgeable determined thief to make short work of most factory security/immobilizer on any bike. I wish it weren't so but altruism won't stop them. Only thing you can do is outsmart them with intuitive countermeasures.

You are making a mistake trying to understand the situation, the immoblizer was bypassed using a tool connected to obd 2 port , and that switch is just to ignite it

I just had a 1999 CB500 stolen, and it wasn't even a "nice" one, an absolute piece of shit, fairings missing, scraped up to fuck, and it still got nicked.

The biggest issue is manufacturers don’t care. You get a bike nicked. You buy another There are ways to fit transponder systems. Mercedes Bmw have a systems where you have to go to main dealer or have thousands of pounds worth of computer systems to replace or bypass transponder key/immobiliser systems. But on bikes They don’t care. One nicked and wrote of. One new one on order it’s repeat business sadly

This not only shows how badly some immobilizer modules are designed but also how sophisticated thieves become and how they study motorcycles electrical wiring knowing electronics.Obviously this video is not related to every bike out there. So calm down guys.Just install more locking measures.

Yea just like they did with car and air bags they need to do with bikes, they need to add security and some type of lo jack systems to bikes, mine just got stolen and believe me it wil not be founded with the police department in this area. Bike companies need to do something about this. Like add security and anti theft devices and hidden bugs on it so you can find it, at least some type of remote that lets you know when someone messes with your bike, so you can be alerted.

In an idea world that would be nice but I think it's a little unrealistic. Arron said it himself, the perfect solution is that the issue would be addressed and measures put in place to make it more difficult for thieves. Your idea wouldn't cost Yamaha much at all, making changes across the range would be big money...
