Our family is growing and we have learnt so much about each other as individuals in our marriage and as parents. Together with our children, we have created wonderful memories, rituals and traditions that are unique to our family. It's been beautiful and it has been a rocky transition of self to integrate into the sum of parts. Cozy up and tune in as we discuss some of the things we have learnt and what makes us who we are over a cuppa and @bakersbiscuits

Hey Mpoomy, I think what can help with the language this is something my parent's did for us when we were little. When they are more acquainted with Brendon's home language you could choose a day of the week where only that language is spoken. So similar to what people do when transitioning to a plant based diet ( Meat Free Mondays), you could have a day where there's no english. It would probably be a challenge at first but with time I'm sure the kids would get the hang of speaking and thinking in that language. Also, books will definitely help so it could be on days when you've chosen to stay in and read with the kids.

My fiance and I have found ourselves having to literally sit down and openly talk about things we thought were "normal" growing up and make a decision to not carry them into our marriage and household. Your point about spirituality is key for me as well. A family needs to know their stronghold cause that just gives fruit to every other aspect of life. I enjoyed this one, thanks guys!

Tradition integration is real and serious thing. I love how Myles munroe said, marriage is not the coming together of two families but the creation of a third family from the two. Not necessarily throwing our culture and traditions but also creating our own culture and traditions. That's how I love it when Mpoomy says leave and cleave by not carrying all of your family tradition into the marriage. Interesting topic I must say.

Never a dull moment with you two! First of all you were both deeply missed and I am glad Mrs moms mentioned how you guys are in a different season! Which most of us try and hold instead of embracing every season of your/our lives without judgment or guilt! This conversation was very informative and reminded me of the book the light we carry by Michelle Obama when she mentioned how her mother's mother had a family tradition where they'd always come to the glass table together during meals but however the kids weren't allowed to speak a single word! And how exciting Michelle's mom felt when the table was broken! And I took perception from it when Brenden mentioned how important it is to have a family tradition of having meals together as a family on one table! A table of freedom, authenticity, love, healthiness and ofcourse catch ups which most of us didn't have coz that table was just meant for food only and no single conversation! This installment made me revisit my childhood too and how I'd want to unlearn certain things and create a healthy environment for my family! Thanks you guys❤️. Lots of Love!

One of the ways to help with language is to assign language to a specific individual. What my parents do with my nephew is this: My mom speaks Venda to my nephew and my dad speaks English with him. So when he goes to his Grandmom he then switch to Venda and when he goes to my dad he speaks English. It is challenging at first but it gets better with practice..

Reading culture is key 💯 start them young with letter sounding of vowels and consonants and picture Reading and then move to word parting eventually they child will be able to read written sounds and actually comprehend what they are reading. Fake reading a book multiple times does help with sound recognition so eventually the children will end up reading the written sounds, as a teacher I see it all the time.

The conversation around language is so important for our generation because our kids interact with tv and youtube more than they do with other people unless you are a screen-free family. My daughter was fluent in Sepedi until she started watching youtube more often and has now switched to English. Coupled with her school being in an English medium, it is dominating. We definitely need to be intentional in teaching them and preserving our native languages. It starts with us as adults exposing them to our languages. We take it for granted how early exposure for us made it possible for us to retain and improve on our home languages especially when we grew up going to English schools. It definitely is about the environment and community. We definitely need content creators creating online shows for our kids in different languages. that would be a game changer in helping out kids become multilingual. Thank you for this session. We've missed having you guys both on the screen.
