Long video, a bit pointless, and then realizing that he doesn't share how exactly he has setup his ad campaigns and how much he spends on them. I have ad campaigns but plays don't blow up. I get clicks but they don't translate into plays. When an artist like him is very genre-specific, I think it is easier. When you are very creative and your music doesn't exactly fit a genre then it doesn't work as well. He should have been more specific about his ad setup

Hi Andrew. I have a bit off topic question. In a collaborative Spotify playlist, if the creator of the playlist leaves it, does the other collaborator take the ability to change playlist's name, cover artwork and to add another collaborator? Because only the creator can do all these. Or he just continues to have the ability to add/remove songs and only this?

I think if its any kind of singer/songwriter, whether that's pop, rock, metal, rap, whatever there would be a lot of use across those genres? So true about the vocal thing. You have to make sure the vocals work (have the nerve and emotion) before committing all that time and effort to finishing a track. You don't even need finished lyrics for this, I find. Another thing is the arrangement - which also has to work in the demo/midi version. If not, you'll never know if it can be mixed well and if it's viable at all. If you like your demo more than your finished track - you may have abandoned ideas in terms of arrangement and vocal phrasings that were there in the demo and lyrics, that made you want to proceed with it. Even with rock and band music these days, it's an iterative process, where songwriting, recording and arrangement blends into one large thing.

@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 ай бұрын
The similar things approach can work for sure, but there aren't any good targets directly. One approach I tend to use for Christian music is just to ignore the fact its Christian entirely and just promote it by similar artists and genres. This won't work if the song is SUPER Christian (like Faith+1 from South Park lol), but if its just faith inspired this can work great. So many people are Christian as well. But even for non Christians they won't care if the song is religious as long as they like the music itself and the lyrics aren't super in their face about the faith aspect.

@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 ай бұрын
I just looked it up. They appear to be on the smaller side and further down on his 'discovered on' section, meaning they're not contributing much to his listener data at all. My guess is he probably had nothing to do with those playlists. Taylor Swift is on 221 botted playlists, and almost every artist i've looked up with more than a few hundred thousand monthly listeners is on at least 1 botted playlist according to Artist Tools. For more info you'd probably have to ask Jend.
@Justforcoms
@Justforcoms 2 ай бұрын
He now has 2 million monthly listeners, do you think 3 botted playlists is a lot for 2 million listeners? Botted playlists include popular music so that it looks like a good playlist to people who might want to pay for the service. Big artists are probably in hundreds of botted playlists
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 ай бұрын
These playlists are pretty small, it seems like they're making almost no impact to his monthly listener count. There is no way to know for 100% if a playlist is botted or not, so often we're going with our best guess. Some playlists show on Artist Tools as botted but might not be, others don't show they're botted but actually are. Artist Tools says Taylor Swift in is 221 botted playlists, but she could be on more or less. It also matters a lot how large the playlists are. A lot of rappers have been caught botting in the past. Not necessarily botted playlists always, but sometimes just straight up bots to their profile directly.

so would you recommend running ads to brazil and mexico? i was only targeting high paying countries to get a better ROAS. i triggered the algorythm and i am pleased with the results. But if i would have run ads to brazil and mexico im sure i would have received alot of more streams directly from the ads, or i would have had to spend less to get the same amount of streams. But my thought process was i want to get pushed in the top paying countries from the algorythm. But if i get picked up in brazil and then from there in the top paying countries i suggest the ROAS of the ads will stil be better because the cost to advertise in Brazil is much less. what is your take on this? PS: I have a budget of about 1k per month
@jendbeats
@jendbeats 2 ай бұрын
hey man, i personally recommend running both. I always have a part of my ads targeted towards the high paying countries (Tier 1) but as you said its also more expensive to target to. The other part of my ads are set to target “Tier 2” countries which is the same list of countries plus the lower paying-but much cheaper to target to countries. This is to get as much traction on the song when it comes out so the odds of it getting into the algorithm later on are higher.
@AndrewSouthworth
@AndrewSouthworth 2 ай бұрын
I agree with Jend's comment. If you can get an amazing cost in Tier 1 only, great. But if you can drastically lower the cost with Tier 2 it makes sense if the goal is algorithmic growth. Sometimes Tier 1 is much more expensive than Tier 2, but sometimes the difference is quite small (and very rarely, some songs do better in Tier 1 markets). The only exception to Tier 2 is if you have a larger strategy that benefits from having more Tier 1 fans. Some artists are willing to tolerate a very high cost in a specific city because they want to grow a market for a tour, which can make sense. But even still, doing a split strategy often still makes sense.

So, he runs ads on facebook. It's the same thing as hyppedit.

Yeah he runs Facebook ads. I wouldn't call it the same thing as Hypeddit, but it's that same type of campaign. Hypeddit is a great entry point into this stuff. Once you're familiar with the principles you can go off on your own and build campaigns from scratch, with full control over the entire campaign.

If 2 million people listening a month isn't enough to live off just put me out of my misery now

haha it depends how much you need to live. This is likely at least 6 million streams per month, which is between $12k and $18k per month on Spotify alone. Now it just depends on what the expenses are to get to that point and how much is left over.

A lot of the music, like Jend, is mindless vibe music. It's essential the new elevator music. I hate to break it to these artists despite their talents. It can get this many listeners because the music is utilitarian and can be played inoffensively in the background of a lot of places. If that is the point of him creating music then all the power to him. It's honestly a great business plan. But ask an artist like this to fill venues or go on tour, and you'll see what I mean. Huge rock bands who can sell out 1,000+ cap venues consistently and have been around for 20 years sometimes have fewer listeners than this guy.

I don't think it's necessarily a good or a bad thing though. But you are 100% right about the touring thing, I know rock / metal artists with roughly the same number of monthly listeners selling out 10,000 to 20,000 seat arenas on tour. The reason why I say it's not good or bad, is because they're just different types of artists. Clearly there is a massive market for solid, catchy and simple EDM music for streaming, and artists like Jend are tapping into that. A lot of these EDM artists don't really want to tour anyways, but the ones that do end up going down the DJ path as well and build up that business too. To me comparing Jend to artists that sell out arenas is like comparing a touring artist to a session musician. Being a session musician isn't better or worse than being a famous artist, it's just a different path. It's better in certain ways and worse in other ways. As far as calling it 'mindless vibe music', I also don't think thats fair. It's just a different type of music. Not every song has to be a huge artistic statement with sophisticated and complex songwriting. A lot of electronic dance music is just making music that makes people feel good and that makes them want to dance.

You don’t cover the specifics of implementing ads at all, or the economics of running ads and streaming revenue. Is what he doing profitable? Wtf, this builds no trust if you’re trying to establish credibility as an expert music marketer
