It happened in spades with my generation who came and then left Japan in under 5 years and i predict it may happen due to these reasons outlined in the video.

I think there have been plenty of studies that show working more than 6-8 hours in an office setting is actually counter-productive because the focus turns to "make work keep busy" instead of "completing projects". I wake up before 5, get to work before 7 and 99.97% of the time the hardest part of the day is done before 10 AM.
@Jebbis
@Jebbis 6 ай бұрын
The US military did studies back in the 60's and they learned that knowledge based workers have about 6 hours of real work in them per day. After that you productivity nose dives and if you keep going you very quickly go into negative productivity. Now here is the kicker, not only do you very quickly go into negative productivity, but the recovery time to get back to normal is about 3-4X as long as the time it took to get there.

that makes perfect sense. Sunk cost fallacy at work here too. So are the Japanese bosses obsessed with working 17 hour days and their teams cant leave until the boss leaves@@Jebbis

All true. Come to Japan with the idea to work for someone else you are a sucker for punishment.

@@user-zi1ze2ks5o I also highly doubt that boss is working those 17 hours. It’s probably like Mad Men where he’s taking a nap on his couch most of the time. I would put money down on the fact that if you average the amount of actual productivity it’s probably like 4-5 hours a day. Remember busy should not be misconstrued for productivity. I can be busy all day and get nothing done.

As with everything; you have to research a lot. Ive been studying language, culture, a bit of history, making friends and looking deep into all the good and bad sides of Japan. One thing I tell people who think of it as a wild disney land is that it is a real, and rather serious country with kind but busy people

Another comment from me haha! Your videos have come around at a great time in my life, I've recently turned 30 and I want to expand my experiences. Japan has always been a country that's had a small place in my heart, not driven by anything like anime, women/romance or grandeur but just curiousness, appreciation for the differences of culture and the beauty of the country. One of the things that holds me back from even getting a Working Holiday Visa which you touched on in your "First 4 years" video is the work culture and how social friendships are formed, I feel like that's something that not everyone might understand. Some people I think will have the delusion that they'll just fit in but Japan from what I've learnt is just so different culturally that westerners might have a hard time fitting in regardless of if what's motivating them is because of what you've mentioned here. This year would be my last year to get WHV so I'm gathering as much information as possible. Maybe it might be better for Japan to be a destination to continue to visit rather than to live in. Thanks again for these awesome videos.

Just came across your channel, and I have to say I'm quite pleased you've said what you have. I suspect the "street people" aspect may come from the interviews being in the big cities. I'll be visiting Japan this year, going a bit rural hopefully, with an eye to possibly moving there in the future. I do admit, I'd like one of those 10% to look my way, but if I do decide to move, a stable job was always my primary aspiration.

Being in Japan for the past 11 years and you're speaking only facts. Japan is very different from what is sold abroad. Besides, Japanese woman are very cute until you marry them, after marriage they are ferocious, you need a lot of patience and a clear mind to have a relationship with a Japanese woman specially when you cannot communicate clearly with them.

It is with this youtubers like it is with p*** they do anything to satisfy there homogenic viewership who just want their point of view confirmed. For me as someone who is interested in all facets it is really hard to find a good youtuber. Most of them just show the big cities, and mostly the strange and funny stuff or weeb stuff. I am also a weeb in my heart, but i find it so cringe to see foreigner like me walking around in anime merge, buying all those plastic waste (figurines and co.) and just having this awkward vibes.

Beards are seen as a bit lazy or slovenly here possibly i have never asked any women why they hate them but that is my assumption. When you have one yourself you won't get a truthful answer because its low class to possibly offend people for their looks. I'll have to shave mine off and then ask them if i want anything close to a real answer.

I’m here for work and used to watch those videos to prepare for living in Japan. Those videos filled me with such negativity by claiming Japanese people are racist (I have caramel brown skin - black American woman). If I watched those type of videos that day I would be “looking over my shoulder” and thinking everyone sees me as ugly, a monster, or something. Its not a healthy mentality to have. I do my best to avoid those videos and I have a better outlook. It took two really kind station staff, for example, that helped me find my bag to learn not all Japanese people are racist, that most people are actually nice and has their own stuff to deal with than focus on me. There are still @$$holes though, but I’m doing my best to not let those few out of many get to me.

Being at work and actually working are 2 different things. They rank number 25 in productivity per hour worked. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_labour_productivity They are at work doing nothing most of the time and the data is there to see for yourself. Many reasons why they have stay in the office long that are cultural which I'll do a video about at some stage. They do the same amount of work but due to culture and the inefficiencies this leads to this issue.

Japan's soft power has increased a fuck ton lately with Japanese pop culture being pushed and more accessible than ever in the West. I think it's led to this weird perception of what Japan actually is for most westerners. Of course this isn't universal. I've seen plenty of Asians come to Europe mostly for studying and become delusional. It's just another extension of Orientalism really. I've been quite tired of seeing the whole "WOW Japan is so different and cool". It'll die down eventually I hope and people start realising Japan isn't some utopia. Then again I'm doubtful of that. The Japanese government will continue to push this influence because it brings them money.
