Brandon Aubrey has absolutely blown away NFL Kickers this year going 19/19 with a long of 58... he's absolutely doing miracles for the Cowboys!

@@Andrew_Waples - Cowboys coaches said that he messed up and ran onto the field and set himself in position too early. He was waiting for far too long compared to his normal routine and just pooched it. It was just nerves, inexperience, and being too eager to get that kick off.

I'm still surprised that more MLS players don't retire from soccer after their careers are over and try out to be kicker in the NFL. Plenty of them still have a boot and a half and their foot skills are still top notch, especially keepers who are used to booting the ball past half field on most of their passes. Seems like an easy way to make a couple extra million after their retirement.
@rb_4SecuredWorld8 ай бұрын
I seem to remember one of the first former soccer players in the NFL ...Pete Gogolak, I think. Actually, I looked him up and he was the first to use soccer style kick using foot insole and coming in from an angle. Don't know about his soccer experience.

Yea being an NFL kicker is the perfect retirement job for a MLS player. I'd imagine compared to being a midfielder it would be like a vacation. A whole lot less running and you still get to boot the ball every game. Plus you get paid tons of money and get front row seats to every game!

Slightest correction: It was not Brandon Aubrey who saw the placekicker miss a field goal, it was his wife who saw it and told him "You could do that."
@tgfabthunderbird18 ай бұрын
I remember former Aussie Rules player Mark Jackson talking about the science of kicking, and how you set up, how you gauged the wind, your points of concentration, and so forth. It's not that much different from soccer, and that combined with power, no surprise the sidewinders started taking over in the 60s. Aubrey just stands out, due to his height, but also his motion is the exact same every time. He does not change his stance, but he clearly does allow for the wind, etc. He's amazing to watch.

As a rugby fan, I really don't understand why the NFL doesn't look outside the sport for good kickers. Is it just myopia? Maybe with the effectiveness of the "tush push" (which is basically just a rugby maul), that will change.

Yeah watched a video not long ago about how Aussie rules players come to the NFL and absolutely put players to shame with their kicking. Also Aussie rules it's a proper brutal game.
@Supperdude98 ай бұрын
You guys can forget that a kicker can change the game. One of the reasons why the Bengals made their Super Bowl Run was because of their kicker. If they got anywhere on their opponents side of the field, they were walking away with points. That's how consistent he was, how accurate, and how good he was. A solid kicker will reward you even if you get stalled, and will win you close games if you just get close enough. Hell the Pats when they were the Pats won some of those Super Bowls with kicks. Getting a great kicker that can snipe you points is paramount.

I know a trick that would help soccer players kick an American football even farther. I used to kick 60 yards in practice using this trick in high school. With about a 70% chance of making it, depending on wind speed. If the wind was behind me it would go even further but that's having the perfect weather. Now the trick is simple. It's the holder. He needs to tilt the football back to about 45 degrees so the belly of the ball is closer to the ground like a soccer ball and then watch them fly. I figured this out when a coach saw me kicking a soccer ball from one goal to another and with the ball rolling in the other goal. He asked if I could do that to a real football 😅. So I gave it a shot but I noticed when I was kicking the football it was getting air really high but it wasn't going the distance that I liked. I was only making 50 yard field goals 😅 which is at the 40 yard mark. So I asked my holder to lean the ball back a lil and the rest is history.
