The only other thing criminal is how poor of quality of the footage we have left of the early 2000's motocross\supercross. I know high quality examples exist some where, but im sure they are locked up in vault some where and will never see the light of day. What even more strange is that we have footage of races from the 80s that is better quality of anything from the early 2000's. 😟

Stewart caught Carmichael and passed him in the WHOOPS. After that Carmichael had no answer and that was it.

They give so much back to the motorcycle community as well. You won't meet any nicer people than Carmichael's. As sad as it was to see him retire, I'm glad he was able to without any permanent injuries. It’s crazy how fast the best of the best are, I remember in 2004 (I think) when Clark Styles came to one of our local motocross races, his semi rolled in about 10min before the A main start, he rolled out on the only 4 stroke race bike any of us had ever laid eyes on in person lol the track went across the property, 180 turn back through whoops, across the start gate, and 180 again across the start gate before going around the perimeter to reconnect to the whoops and he didn’t leave the gate until everyone had passed in front of the gate. Basically giving everyone a half lap head start, in a 5 lap race on a track were he was turning a sub 45sec lap time. He passed the entire field and lapped his way up to 3rd in a field of around 8-9 riders. There was a double-triple-single rhythm that he was doing double-quad from lap 1, he had never seen the track before as it was a temp track in the local park that was a once a year event at that location and had definitely never ridden it before. And to think, he couldn’t compare to Ricky, or Reed in this era. Blows my mind to this day when I think about it.

What can't you stand about him? He's the epitome of hard work over talent. He had the least to work with and turned out to be the greatest of all time. He's humble too. A chunky 5'6 kid with him mom as a trainer who had no idea what she was doing, and his dad who learned motorcycle mechanics on the fly. Literally the odds were completely against this dude and he just said "fuck the odds, I'll just outwork everyone", and the dude made it. Tell me, what isn't to love about RC? I was a huge Bubba fan, as well as a big Ivan Tedesco fan and an Alessi brothers fan, but I cannot think of a single reason to dislike Carmichael other than because he always beat your favorite rider lol.

It's hard to think about how many kids out there have hidden talents and gifts that will never be recognized because they don't have parents that would do even half of what the Carmichael's did for theirs. @@BornAGoon No it didn't. It was lowered. Lower bikes corner better too. It was a huge advantage that we don't think of today, as I watch amateur track racers go so slow around corners on some of these very tall bikes today. Today's bike set up, (tall bike, tall bars and level levers) is dysfunctional for a MX bike. Believe it or not,---you get your bar set up from freestyle. Kids started moving their bars up at the same time freestyle took off. I would love to see a real, clay, (no ruts or berms), off camber corner. The pros would not know how to ride it. You really oughta to look into the life story of Hunter and Jettson Lawrence and their family. A pair of brothers from the Sunshine Coast of Australia that not only beat the odds while the family lived in a camper van traveling across Europe, but have shattered expectations of those in the motocross business. What those two have accomplished in their careers already have been mind boggling. Hunter and Jett, in 2023 alone, claimed 5 of the 7 AMA pro dirtbike titles, with Jett winning the 250 West title and the 450 MX (UNDEFEATED!) and SMX World titles, and Hunter winning both the 250 East and 250 MX titles. Not only that, but the brothers have both been great ambassadors to the sport outside of it.

Pound for pound. If Ricky brings a knife you better bring a tank. If he brings a gun you better bring the USMC 3rd Battalion. 50% bad + 50% ass = 100% BADASS!

Lol, it's not even debatable. 15 Championships, 2 perfect seasons and a 3rd nearly perfect, no one is close. If he felt like racing the full schedule in '07 it would have been 17 titles.

Wow, what a tribute. You told the story very well, Goon. I remember watching many of those Carmichael dominating races. I am a S'Moto rider and can appreciate the level of natural talent the Goat, Stewart, and McGrath displayed on two knobbie tires and an unforgiving track surface... SALUTE 🫡

Man when I was a kid watching interviews and slice of life style videos about current or retired riders one line has always stood out from the rest. In an interview with Ryan Dungey in a video about his rise to the top was a little line where the interviewer asked Dungey about Carmichael, what it was like to train with him, and his response has always sat rent free in my mind. He effectively said that even when he (Dungey) was at the top of the competition, Ricky Carmichael still kept him on his toes in practice laps or just spinning laps at the Goat farm, and Dungey remarking that Carmichael could easily come out of retirement as an at the time late 30s early 40 year old and sit on the podium comfortably.

Amazing video! I have never looked at any Moto sport before and only got interested recently. It is spectacular to learn about such a legendary person like Carmichael even though, before now, I had never even heard of him. Well put together, informative, and inspiring. Thanks for your contribution to the internet.

I was a moto grom in the 90s and Ricky has been as always will be my favorite rider! I always had the same make bike same colors same numbers and being a redhead i was truly his mini me. Always the nicest guy to meet in the pits and just hands down an amazing role model for the youngins. These days i am avid ricky relics collector ive got about a dozen of my favorite jerseys he wore with a good number of them autographed race used by him! so much fun collecting from the greatest era of motocross in history. my favorite in my collection is a 92 hi flyers rookie card of him on his kx80 that i have signed from him. looking forward to seeing him again this year at Daytona!!

When i was Growing up i was a huge Ricky Carmichael fan, he was the reason i got my first dirt bike a 1982 KDX 250, but i had no idea he was this OP in his career, Then i started rooting for Chad as im an Australian and it was wicked seeing an aussie take on the top of the class, Ricky, James, Chad, Jeremy 4 names ill never forget. you cant teach determination and discipline that lies solely on the person

Love the whole video and im sure Ricky and his fam appreciate the ton of work and research put on to making video not to mention the spot on commentary that got me glued from start to finish! Didn't know much coming in but leaving with a great amount of respect, admiration and a quote to LIVE BY Hard work beats talent when talent is not there to put in the work.

Ahh my childhood summed up in one video. I started watching motocross when I was 5 in 2000. I was lucky how I got to see Rickys entrie career. Looking back its only fitting when RC retired I moved on to baseball. Racing is still awesome but its missing something for me. The GOAT has rode off into the sunset, and I'm glad he's still around doing commentary. He gives so many awesome insights into racing only he would know. Truly the GOAT.

RC was the greatest ever outside but i think Stuart was the greatest inside. Truly appreciate watching this Thanks.

Ricky changed the game forever with his work ethic, that's another accomplishment that's not on the books. So glad I was able to watch him race in person, on top of his greatness, he was also a nice guy, my buddy's son met him at the race and Ricky gave him a pair of his own riding pants. He is the GOAT.

Carmichael's skill and talent on a dirt bike was un-equaled. Then, on top of that,..he had everyone beat on fitness and work ethic. Then,...he had more grit and fierceness than the rest. He was a complete animal, with the heart of a lion and the will of a pitt bulldog. He is the GOAT !!
