The motorcycle world needs another Hodaka now. Teenagers can't afford a 12k dirt bike...

15:12 total deaths doesn’t mean much without the context of total number people riding quads A doubling of deaths sounds bad but if there was also a 8x increase in the number of riders then it would actually be more an indication they became safer for example. That’s the problem with stats, they are easily used to misinform. Not saying that was your purpose. Nonetheless it’s the reality.

I’ll never forget watching these videos after school and then the night before going riding on the weekends. Free riding videos were idolized by my brothers and I when we were kids.

1897... The year fun started! 1:51... Safety first! Look at the couple about to roll off the cliff hahah. The first quad I owned was the Tecate 4. I remember the Lt500s when they came out some people returned them. Just too crazy. I have no idea who had the sack to race them.. I ride a Raptor to this day. I think another contributing factor to the ATV deaths being so high in WV is that is where the Hatfield McCoy trail system is. You get a strange mix of both newcomers with over powered SxS and old schoolers on pure sport quads. Somethings got to give.

"It's always the rider's fault" is true, but misleading. Riders are humans, humans do stupid things like considering helmets uncool, and then someone has to mop a kid's brain off the pavement. The premise of "rider's fault" doesn't work because there is effectively no rider without fault. It's always the same, people wagging fingers about not being stupid and wearing helmets, and then admitting to being stupid and not wearing helmets themselves. That said, I'm not advocating banning quads. People will always find ways to compete for Darwin's awards. Just saying that blaming the riders is in large part a non-argument.

Yamaha didn't "start it all." The AMA setup the rules so that 4-strokes would have an undeniable advantage and kill the "dirty" 2-stroke. The AMA could bring back the 2-stroke in a second by simply changing the rules and giving 2-strokes the advantage. This was the worst decision ever by the f*cking AMA.

Funny story, the largest in sales volume of all Hodakas was located just a few miles from me in Owensville MO! In the 7s and 80s there were Hodakas everywhere around here...not many now but there is a 74 Dirt Squirt in my garage!

Late to the comment party here but I really think the unicorn adv bike will be discovered once battery technology improves. If I could get an 80+ HP with roughly 450-500 miles of range on one charge that would be the unicorn of ADV/Dual Sport bikes. unfortunately that type of range is nowhere near possible. But within a decade from now with higher EV consumption maybe the technology or infrastructure to support it will be more available.

I can almost taste the sweet smell of the premix exhaust and feel the vibration pounding through the grips. All the adventures with the bikes I had the good fortune to experience in the 70's came flooding back. What a great time it was to be a kid! Thank you sir for stirring all those faded memories to life again with a great story.

I'm somewhat ignorant on motocross bikes and can't see the benefits of 4 stroke over 2 stroke. Also, why are street bikes generally all 4 stroke? I use a lot of landscape maintenance tools, all 2 stroke.

He is the champion of dirty racers. If you look at almost every pass in the turns, he stuffs his rear wheel into every rider he passed. No such thing as a clean pass with that man.

Had a 125 combat wombat from Castro Valley Hokaka.....the last bike(dirt) I owned was a 250 thunderdog....the street version was so de tuned....... the dirt version , well, in 78, in Oroville, Kenny Robert's rode my bike at a freinds event. He said " nice 500", and was amazed when he was told displacement. He even developed a flat track frame....too bad how it all ended

Not true...he was 100% the greatest in the USA, however he never won a motocross world championship and was therefore never a "World champion" sadly only one American has won a World championship and that was Brad Lackey in the early 80's, after a long hard 10 year battle to get there. Sorry but facts are facts

Jesus this brought tears to my eyes, especially at the end when you said that was fun while it lasted. I always rode a Honda from a 69 mini Trail 50 to a CR125 in 73. Back in the 70s, we had this little motorcycle shop in the middle of town where he sold Bultaco, Maico, the Indian enduro bike, and Hodaka. When they came out with the Rat bikes he could not keep them in stock a lot of my friends bought them and they were nice-looking bikes but like you said the CR125 eventually put that little shop out of business and it's a shame because even though he usually only had 4 or 5 new bikes in at a time they were all the sought after european ones people look for now but those Hodakas were real eye candy with their marketing.

Rossi's first race on the Yamaha still gives me goosebumps when I see or hear about it. If he wasn't a legend already, then that race 100% confirmed it. I still don't know how he did it and I think Biaggi realised that day that Rossi was in a different league
