In a way it makes sense due to the concept loyalty between the viltrumite culture. They were trained and raised under the idea that being part of something in which you matter is important, probably the most important thing. The Empire was essentially a cult, and once they were exposed to different ways in which you can find importance and meaning in life, things begin to crack. They were still the same loyal and prideful warriors, but their purpose was starting to change in a direction that Thragg didn't want because he was no longer their main goal.

In my opinion, the reason why Nolan changed longer compared to others is because of the pressure. He is the only viltrumite who learned to love at the time. So imagine you being the only one to learn this feeling while you have an entire empire behind you that knows your behind schedule and worse you don't have back up. But when the remaining Viltrumites joined earth the numbers started increasing which in turn decreased the pressure of your love ones dying if you rebel.

I think an underrated feature of the dynamic here is that Viltrumites are emotionally underdeveloped. Whereas humans grow up learning, failing, making compromises, and practicing soft skills, Viltrumites almost never have to do that. The powerful are at the top, the rest are beneath. That is a brutish and unsophisticated moral and emotional life for them to lead. When Viltrumites live with humans, they find themselves in a position where they can no longer treat domination as the goal of most relationships. They are children, who respond to nurturing in the same way that ordinary people do. They can't explain it because it's genuinely outside of their ken. This is why, in the long term, the Viltrumites will fall to Humanity's soft power. After living on Earth, the descendants of Viltrum may become fascists, but there will be enough who won't be that Thragg will never get his chance to simply dominate Earthlings forever.

Love was something they had always had, and their first emperor wanted everyone to keep. But when Thragg took over, he took everything, twisted it, and tore it apart like the maniac he is. However, he was one of the survivors and declared that after the purge, they would seek to protect those who could not themselves and to help spread peace... Thragg hated that and, due to the purge, believed everything other than viltrumites were nothing but vermine, or lesser beings than themselves. As well as any viltrumite too weak to win in combat. So he had the emperor assassinated, took over the title by threatening most of everyone into submission, killing anyone who didn't change to his doctrine, began enslaving or exterminating the races they once protected... etc. This is why Thaedus fights against it as he is a die-hard believer who refuses to follow the original emperors doctrine. As well as attempt to completely exterminate the royal bloodline to prevent any challenge in the future. As in the original laws of the viltrum empire, only those of Royal blood could rule, and only when there wasn't anyone of royal blood would someone take over command *temporarily*. Thragg never planned on keeping the title temporarily. As for how he assassinated the emperor, that's where the virus that killed another half of the already halved viltrum empires people comes into play. If I remember correctly, Thragg was the one who released it onto his people, but it got out of control very quickly as he only intended to use it to kill the emperor quickly. Since general poisons and such don't work on viltrumites, only extremely deadly diseases or unparalleled power and force/mass.

no thats all wrong. the Vultrum empire started to spread after the great purge which wiped half there population. at that time Thragg was not even born. Argall was murderer sometime right after Thragg reached maturehood Thragg was raised and trained to be the best Vultrumite soldier to be Argall personal body guard and agent, because of that he was made grand regent and was giving the task of finding Argall heir. But sometime after he assume the rule of a grand regent the scourge plague was unleashed on the vultrum popalation this has caused 99% fatalities which made Vultrumites nearly extinct. This has also made the job of finding Argall heir nearly impossible which made Thragg eventually give up on looking. the Vultrum empire was never peaceful, They are basically cave men with the power to travel to other planets and steal technology advancement. it suggested in the comics that the reason why Vultrum culture is so violent and deprived of empathy is cause of there long life span. They can care for people but because the live so long that care is replace with Apathy and logic which leads to simple solutions. them socializing with humans woke up there ability to empathize. That's the whole point. While the others lived down on Earth and built bonds with people and essentially went native after being exposed to love and compassion - he remained all alone cooped up in his warship on the moon surrounded by slaves and underlings from conquered races. His plan was never meant to work, he never even had a chance. Nolan being discovered as Argall's heir just accelerated things. The Viltrumites would whack Thragg themselves sooner or later after being exposed to Earth long enough. They already rejected the old ways, even if they didn't even realize it yet - the way how Lucan exposed his vulnerability and instead of being called a weak little bitch, got a supporting hand on the shoulder from Kregg shows plenty where they stand. They not only bond with humans, they are building genuine bonds of friendship among themselves, they no longer operate under the "Dog eat dog, might makes right" mentality. Sooner or later they would perceive Thragg as a threat to the lives they built on Earth and make a move on him.

What's particularly interesting, to me anyway, is that Thragg's plan would've worked like a charm if he was just slightly less of a hardass. All he had to do was look the other way a little, be slightly more permissive in letting his subordinates achieve his goals their way, and they would have *adored* him for it. He would've gotten his unstoppable army of Viltrumites, and more than that, they would've been brought up hearing about how the Grand Regent is not just incredible and mighty, but how *wise, fair, and generous* he proved himself to be when their people were at their lowest point, and how his rule single-handedly saved their people. An army that would've been unquestionably loyal to him.

Thragg and Nolan are like 2 sides to a coin Nolan was up there with Thragg in terms of viltrumite supremacy, so much so that nearly 20 years on the planet later and he was still thinking of conquering it kregg and lukan both developed sentiments with their lovers and the humans blindingly quick, and Thragg just walls himself off so he can't be exposed to it Thragg sees the humans as cattle, but does he not value his own offspring at all? I think he's as weak willed as Nolan and the rest of them, and that's why he chose to stay separate from the earthlings, because if he had to meet and talk to a woman, have a kid, and raise it, he'd be converted just like Nolan and the others It brings to mind the trope of "Both started down the same path, but went different directions in the end" nolan died for his family and kids, and Thragg died alone for his empire Together they really could've had a whole new viltrum/earth empire started, if Thragg just didn't make humans expendable in the process

I also think the context of this is really important. when Nolan wanted to take over his empire was basically well-oiled and still kicking. refusing to conquer the planet could have been a death sentence for him and earth. But if I am not mistaken this scene takes place after Viltrum basically got fucked into oblibion and viltrumites basically had no place to go. so, all of them are in a "weakened" state, now the idea of deserting, of switching sides becomes easier, because the pressure is much less compared to when Nolan had to go through.

Everyone seems confused why it took Nolan longer to assimilate. The decision to abandon your species, the mission you've had for the last 500 years, and threat of imminent death was a lot stronger. I like how and why they changed. It's actually a biologically encoded and understandable instinct that men want to protect every women who has their kid. I'm not putting labels onto anyone, since it's obvious that the Vultrimites also enjoy the peaceful and thriving world compared to all the battles and hardships in their past, I'm just saying that humans actually have some primal mental designing in them, like how it's instinctual for women to care for their kids. On the basic level, men doesn't always want to fight. They would rather protect their family, no matter how big it is, and I like it how this sort of mental designing was put into aliens too, even though they are so murderous in their culture. There's something I've been mulling over in my head for the last little while that is based on this interaction and pretty much the other results of Thragg ordering his people to mingle with earth's citizens and they fold almost immediately. Nolan takes 20 years and beating Mark within an inch of his life to truly understand the love humans share with each other. Every time a viltrumite talks about him after the fact, they always remark on the fact that Nolan was one of the most respected soldiers in the army and that everyone always looked up to him for his adherence to his duty and people. Clearly, there's something special about him. Then we find out that he's the last known heir of Argal, Viltrum's last king, who was known for his wisdom and internal strength. Yes, he was strong, all Viltrumites are, but his ability to punch really hard wasn't why the people mourned his death and looked for any potential descendants. When it's found out that Nolan is a son of Argal and the rightful ruler of the Viltrumite empire, every single living member of it immediately bends the knee to nolan, a man that was already respected and well known for his loyalty and dedication to the empire (aside from the last couple years of him failing to pacify earth, working with the coalition, and helping gather weapons and fighters that can actually *kill* them, all that). So my thoughts are this: the willpower Nolan exhibited for staying true to Viltrumite for 20 years while on earth and holding onto the detachment he needed to betray everyone on earth, his ability to easily look back on and learn from his past mistakes, and the traits that put him head and shoulders above his contemporaries to the point that so many of them looked up to him, all of these are traits that Argal must have shown, and that kind of wisdom is why others so easily followed him in such a bloodthirsty, survival of the fittest, imperialistic society. Those same traits were what let him stay true to the ideals of the viltrumite empire way longer than others when put in a similar situation. I should note that when he found the bug planet, his original intention was to bring it into the empire's fold as a way to make up for his apparent failure on earth, and only really changed his mind when they showed up and started killing everyone to punish him

What I find odd is why he's mad, most of them are all making valid points. (Who I assume is) Anissa is a woman, she does not have the ability to just have sex and go on to the next one. She quite literally has to bear the child and then do it again, and she simply does not want to bear children. It's illlogical to say she is getting caught up when if she weren't she would be doing anything anyway. The second one is actively protecting each of his mothers, how is that weak? Earth gets attacked 24/7 and humans are no where near as strong as a Viltrimite. If anything, he's being the most active to your effort because he's keeping the mothers safe. I can't really argue for the 3rd one but my point stands, emotional or not, he's far too harsh.

You know this actually raises an important question; Is it more dangerous for female Viltrumite’s to mate than it is for the males? Like think about it, the new generation of Viltrumites were pretty much all born with no powers, which is a good thing considering I don’t think a nom powered species could survive a baby with the upper end of super strength. When that baby goes to move or kick you gotta imagine that it would put a hole in their mother’s, and that would be with the tines flick at any stage of their life. So for the males it doesn’t seem dangerous to breed, but what about the females? Are their organs and reproductive systems not super powered? If not, how does a non super powered baby survive in their mothers womb? They wouldn’t be able to grow any cause they don’t have the strength needed to move around and develop, and even then how exactly do they survive being born? One small push and that kid gets thrown into a wall, if they could even survive the vice vag grip in any capacity. If all that actually happens and imposes extreme danger on the newborn, you’d have to go through so much shit just to keep that kid alive, in which i get Anissa being extremely pissed about not having more kids.

It kind of sense that Viltrumites would be susceptible to love and affection. They essentially spent their whole lives in a cold environment, battling and killing until they die. Finally's settle down and just enjoying life with love and affection given to them for the first time in their lives, of course it's gonna shatter their whole view on things and change them for the better. Really most of the Viltrumites weren't psychotic monsters to begin with, It was just a raised how they were raised, Thragg on the other hand remained on a ship and thus was never exposed to such an environment, which is why he remained unchanged, while the others saw something better for themselves and pretty much ran straight toward it.

By not joining his subordinates in the search for partners on earth, Thragg unwittingly doomed himself.
