Tin Coating is a process in which a layer of Tin metal is deposited on brass metal. Pots made with brass metal are prone to corrosion. Acids in food react with brass metal and a layer of corrosion appears on them. To avoid this, Tin Metal is deposited on Brass pots. Coating of Tin metal saves Brass metal from corrosion.

This is what is going on: 1. Brass and Copper cannot be used in direct contact with food. They leach out toxic chemicals. Therefore, if you coat it with food grade tin metal it is safe for cooking. 2. Ammonium Chloride is being used as an etching/cleaning agent, and also a flux. Metal must be degreased, cleaned of rust, for another metal to stick to it. Tin must have a flux to lower its melting point for sticking to brass or copper or steel or any other compatible metal. This product does both. That is why he dips his rag into the AC salts and scrubs the pan with it, then uses it again when he picks up the tin strips on the ground. AC is moderately toxic to work with. Gloves should be used, and a chemical mask. This man uses neither being poor. When you heat up AC the vapors are toxic and will irritate the lung like asthma. It gets worse with time. Always wear a mask, eye protection, heat resistant gloves. 3. You can also use Harris Stay Clean Liquid Flux with a brush after heating pan. This does the same thing. Yes, you need full protection too. It might be AC salts not sure. This is sold in the US. 4. The rag is either cotton, or fiberglass insulation. Again, you don't want to breathe in any fibers. This is what they typically use for tinning. He is rubbing it on the ground to get rid of burnt bits. It will not stick to the tin as it comes off as tin hardens. 5. The tin should be food grade and pure no contaminants or other metals. It has a low melting point. No, it won't melt when you cook food because the food picks up the heat not the empty pan. 6. Pan should be heated evenly and maintained as tin is being applied. Tricky job. 7. This flux should be neutralized with a baking soda and water wash, then washed well with soap and water before being used in food prep. 8. If you look for Copper Re-tinning videos you will see this is done in France, Turkey, India, US. Not a lost art. You can do it too.

Thanks. I was looking for info on how medieval people tinned the steel plates of the brigandine armour to resist rust. Would dipping iron in molten tin also work?

@@MrArthoz Yes it would but much more difficult and hazardous. There are fumes too. Just do it this way, it is easy.

@@werewolf74 Not directly, you need a copper or nickel flash.

Why should be applied Tin with ammoniam chloride? It's can use plain brass vessel.

It's poisonous to use brass without doing kalai or tin plating. Only mud utensils are full safe Pingani, stainless steel , and cast iron utensils are good only after mud utensils. This generation mostly don't know about this.

You cannot use brass or copper in direct contact with food. It will leach out copper and toxins into food. By coating with tin, you make them safe. Ammonium Chloride is used to clean the metal of corrosion or rust or grease, and also as a flux to lower melting point of Tin. See my comment above.

The tin is just a thin layer of plating - he's basically coating the brass with a soldering process; the ammonium chloride is the flux

The AC is used to clean the pan and also as a flux for the tin. You only need a small amount of tin to spread thinly. He is using a tin solder strand. Typically, he should do two coats. His coat was very thin.

Pure tin is harmless and has been used on cooking pots, pans, even on food cans for a long time. Problem is if someone uses cheaper soldering tin+lead alloy for this job.

No, tin is perfectly safe. Copper and aluminum and brass are unhealthy to cook in directly. You line them with tin or enamel.
