@ACDesignsGarage I painted a whole 96 chevy long bed doing exactly what you've done here. Then I cut it and buffed it. It looks unbelievably good. If you do a cutting video on that 2k clear a lot of people are gonna be shocked. 99.9% of people wouldn't know my paint job wasn't factory. Came out WAY better than I had hoped for

I was skeptical about using a rattle can 2k clear over rattle can Rustoleum. Then I watch this video and your follow up. I am blown away with the results. I’m totally stoked to do this myself now, whereas prior to your videos, I was debating on just paying someone else. Thank you brother! Amazing what you did in less than ideal conditions with spray paint. I’m a believer now.

I really appreciate that you show the things like sanding in real time. So many videos trim those parts for attention span reasons but its so helpful to see everything in real time and get a feel for how long things take and what time windows we're really working with. If people just cut to post sanding, you don't know if it was 5 minutes or 5 hours.

I like the fact that you show yourself use a squeegee to dry the water off as you sand to inspect the surface for proper surface prep, Not many painters show this step to see that they have the surface prepped correctly. And in my honest opinion it is a very important step!

Question. If I sprayed a lot of clear coat (sucky clear coat) but had to go back and sand it with (ending with 3000) but want to put more clear coat on (different kind) and I used rubbing compound the remove the white stuff left after the 3000 sandpaper, can I just add clear coat now or will the rubbing compound screw it up? And if so, how do I get rid of the rubbing compound without having the white come back before I spray clear coat?
@ACDesignsGarage

I would just wipe it down with wax and grease remover then sand it with 600 grit wet the shoot your next coat of clear, you can shoot over 800 grit also, but I like 600 the best. If you don't sand it it won't stay to long.

The Turbo is made so that ut even sprays upside down. The 2K loses too much compressed air when you try it. Then you're left with Paint inside that you can't spray out. But I've been using some other stuff and ut does work on those! 👍

One big problem with doing this…. You are putting a catalyzed product which is a “thermoset” and a non catalyzed product ( rustoleum) which is a “thermoplastic “ which means that if you reintroduce a solvent to a thermoplastic it becomes liquid again… the complete opposite goes for the thermoset product .., it becomes solvent resistant after curing. This my friend is a guaranteed peeler, by putting the product that cures over one that technically doesn’t it will trap solvent and lift the clear right off the surface. Sure it looks good immediately but it won’t last , if you get a stone chip and then power wash your car the clear will peel off in sheets… I’m a 35 plus year painter that has had professional training from PPG and BASF and both will tell you this is a “ No No” … Sure you can do it, sure it works, but only very short term. Waste of time and money But that’s my opinion, you do you and have fun repainting all this stuff, job security… more content

I won't speak to how his job will react. I can speak from my novice experience with this same setup on my engine bay. I tried to follow the principle of spraying the turbo, waiting for the base to tack up and applying the 2k clear. I had a bad reaction where the clear wrinkled up with the base coat. I'm assuming it's because I didn't allow for enough of the solvent to off gas. From my research, I've read that you should allow more time for the turbo to off gas, some say a few days to a week. But I've also come across 15-20 minutes. I will be trying this same setup again, but I plan to give the base coat about a week to cure and then I will wet sand the peel out and clear coat that. Then cut and buff. Again, I have very little experience with paint, I'm geared more toward the mechanical side. But I prefer to learn and do things myself. Which is why I've been enjoying his content. So, hopefully in the next video he will give better insight to reaction and solutions if it does happen.

@@Mr.Wongburger I recently used these exact products on my hubby's tractor. Granted, due to weather I had to wait about a week or longer between the black and the 2K clear. And I haven't had any reactions. But I also used a "ColorShift" in between. (I used Blue to Purple from the Auto Parts store. It said "ColorShift" on top.) I'm not sure if that made any difference or not. Just trying to help.

@@inthelandofmorethansmall7582 Thank you for the info. It's probably due to allowing the base to off gas first. The clear coat with hardener will dry much quicker than the rustoleum, this traps the solvents underneath causing the wrinkles.
@ACDesignsGarage
@ACDesignsGarage 7 ай бұрын
Had no reaction with the rustoleum but not sure about other brands. I check a spot on tape where it over sprayed on. You want it to barly be sticky like the back side of a piece of tape. You don't want it stringing like a spider web, it's still to wet at that point. It's ready when it's early sticky like tape and youll be good to shoot the 2k. You can check my 2k video and see how sticky I show it in there. Thanks for watching!!!!

I have watched a lot of painting videos as I'm new to this and you are hands down the best on detail and common sense delivery, many thanks for your videos! I do have a question that, as usual, can't get a straight answer on reading and watching videos. I had to walk away from my basecoat project about a week ago before clearcoating it. How do I prep the dried basecoat before clearing it? I've read scuff it first with anything from 600 to 1200 grit sandpaper, then recoating it, then clearing it. What is the process you recommend? Thanks, a fellow Tar Heel.
@ACDesignsGarage
@ACDesignsGarage 5 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching, yes your right I would stuff it with 600 to 800 grit wet then I would blow a coat of base back over it, but if you can't base it scuff it lightly with 600 grit, wipe it down and clear it.

I just subscribed. I think you have talent and good tips. For all the money you spend on spray cans it might be worthwhile to get a spray gun ( even an HF gun) and learn to spray with that. Could yield better results with less finish sanding. And, glad to see you with the respirator. That catalyst spray is nasty stuff and you don't want it in your lungs. Good content!

Should I wet sand the paint before putting on the clear if I have orange peel? Or can I put the clear over it then cut and buff the clear and it will get rid of the orange peel?

Yes you'll need to wet sand to give it a surface to bite to. I'd block it wet with 600 on a flat block and flatten it down a little then shoot 3 coats of clear then you can cut and buff it!!!

Yes you should be able to. The way I'd go about it is to prime over the bongo and go over a inch or two ,let that dry. Then sand the whole door with 600 wet spray your color over the primer . Go past the primer a couple inches the 2k clear the whole pannel. I hope this helps!!!!

Yes its pretty easy, you take a small hard sanding block and slowly sandjust on the run till it gets flat then buff it up to a shine. I start with 800 wet then 1000 wet then 1500 wer then 2500 wet then buff. Basically you cut it flat with the 800 the the rest is removing the deeper scratches. Would you like me to make a video on it??????

I hate to say but if it was a catalyzed clear and he didn't inject the hardner it probably won't harden. That's what it does when you push in the red cap is inject the catalyst. I've dealt with this before, but it's a pain. Sorry to hear that.

What is your opinion on the color. The thing I didn’t like about the turbo can black as with most aerosol black paints it doesn’t look as rich deep black as say a single stage black. I’m really curios if the 2K clear changed the appearance of how deep black it looks.

I think the clear darkens it up a little bit and has a better gloss, were gonna try to cut and buff that 2k clear this week and see what we mess up lol. Now my Glossy Black Guitar is Matt Black from sanding? Should I respray Black Gloss and leave it for a few minutes to get tacky and then use 2K Clear? Or can I clearcoat over what I have now (Matt Black)? And will the 2k adhere well to the surface I have now ? because it has been about 48 hours since it was Sprayed Black and I also read somewhere else, that my Black Sprayed coats may seal and harden after 48 hours and the 2K clearcoat might not adhere to it?
