Quality tutorial Kevin, many thanks. On setting 'appearance' of sphere to a different material (version 360 Personal Sept 2020) I couldn't get the cylinder and sphere to colour separately until I eventually found the 'Select' function had a sub menu where 'Select Priority' was set in my version to ' Bodies' as a default and not 'Select Faces' which was needed for the selection/appearance to work correctly. :-D

I love your lessons, I've enjoyed them all so far! I do want to say, as a suggestion, that it would be nice if you put the units of each lesson at the beginning of every lesson. Currently you only mention when they are millimeters, which is my default. So when you do a lesson in inches I don't realize it until you've started the first sketch

This series has been a great way to learn this software. My 8 year old has been working through them too and is now begging me for a 3D printer so he can bring some of his creations to life. I think one simple way to improve these videos is with a little information right at the start on what units we are going to be working in. You list the skills we will be learning, add the units even if only in text. I often find myself having to pause the video to readjust the units of the design after I've already activated a tool because often the first time you mention the lesson's units is when you are giving the dimensions for the first sketch. Just a thought, keep up the great work.

2:25 I did not expect the fillet tool to be able to create such a smooth transition between two objects. From the previous videos one would think that tool is only used to smooth out edges. Makes me wonder if the fillet tool could have been used (in a creative way) for the Whiskey Bottle project?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Special Agent Dale Cooper. The fillet tool could certainly be used for the Whiskey bottle project in a similar manner. However, I typically advise against this method (unless its a simple fun project such as this) as you'll always get more control with a guide rail/loft. You'll find that in any CAD program there are often many ways to achieve the same result. One has to find the right balance of efficiency and ability to edit or alter their design later down the road. Cheers, Kevin :)

@glennm.9015
@glennm.9015 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin, Well I can provide some armor parts I'd love making. The hard part is that I can't really seem to handle different heights in sketching. I've seen people sketch armor parts or other stuff without extruding a single part first. But after a while I get lost in all my different sketches and planes... Even a simple chest armor piece of a knight will do fine... But have no idea how to start that one... It might be easier to do one side I presume and then just mirror the other side?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 6 жыл бұрын
Mirroring is always helpful when objects are symmetrical. It can save a lot of time and make things simpler. Thanks for the idea! I'll add it to my list of videos to make. I can't promise I'll get to it right away, but I'll be able to do something eventually. I'd think the loft or sweep commands would be perfect for a lot of armor pieces. For the sweep, you could sketch the side profile and then a path to follow. If you want it to be more detailed or precise you can create multiple (2+) profiles and then create a guide path (or multiple guide paths) and loft the piece. Cheers, Kevin

I'm curious how you knew to choose ANSI Metric Screw Profile and the design M22x3. The Edison Screw for light bulbs, E26 is the US standard, as the "26" refers to the largest outside diameter in mms. Also there doesn't seem to be a measure for threads per inch (which matters I think). And if I choose these same settings for a hole in a block and add an inside thread, I should be able to screw in a E26 light bulb into a 3D-printed model???
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Don. Thanks for the information. To be honest, I referenced a document online and it may not have been correct. For this 30 Days series the focus was on core concepts more than accuracy of specifications. As far as the 3D printed threads, you will likely have to alter the thread with the Press Pull command. You'll want to factor in some tolerance since (most) 3D prints are not 100% smooth/accurate. I'll be making a video on some of these tricks at some point. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Tami. Great question. Sockets have reverse threads, so you'll need to change the direction in the thread dialog box to the "left hand" option. Here's a screenshot for your convenience: snag.gy/5yB1Pd.jpg Overall, you'll apply the thread similar to this tutorial, you'll just need to place the thread inside of a cylinder instead of the outside. @@Tamigralnik Hi Tami - most common parts have standard thread sizes, which can also vary per country. I would recommend searching on Google for standard thread sizes for your tap/country. It's also helpful if you know the specific model number or brand of the product, as it should list the thread type somewhere in the product manual or documentation. As far as in Fusion 360, there is no guide or help in regards to which thread size you should choose. This is something you have to figure out beforehand. As other people have reported, I also cannot get the silver base to fillet up over the bulb. Instead, the bulb curves down over the socket. I have spent 2 hours trying things, ensuring I do exactly what the video says, etc. No matter what, the bulb comes down over the socket:( Perhaps we need to create the sphere first, then the cylinder? I am using version 2.0.13866. Oddly, when I go on to the next step (fillet the bottom of the bulb) the fillet shows the bulb material rather than the metal base.

Something must have changed in how a sphere can be created, because nothing I do will make my sphere origin point snap to the endpoint of that construction line. I even tried to make it a regular line rather than construction. When I initiate a sphere, the only thing it will snap to is one of the XYZ axis lines, but no points along them, neither on the cylinder, nor the construction line. I've made sure the auto project options are both enabled. Something else must have changed. This is pretty frustrating. I can't even figure out how to work around this in the latest version.

I feel like I must be missing some settings...this is the second time you've instructed us to operate on an origin plane referencing the initial body in the sketch and it didn't work like in the video. (Last time this happened was in the hex nut lesson, see my comment there). Is there a difference in Autodesk Fusion 360 (Startup License) and Autodesk Fusion 360 (Education License)? Has there been some sort of change in the last year that would have these effects?

I had the same problem. These seems to be a change in default settings for newer Versions. I had to go to proferences (click you name in the upper right corner -> Preferences) then under "General" -> "Design" here activate "Auto Project edges on reference"

Hi, ChronOJohn. Thanks so much for sharing this.... I wasn't aware that they changed this as a default... but I will look into this. Cheers, Kevin :)

Hi, Emeses. Did changing the preferences setting that ChronOJohn mentioned have any affect to your auto-projected lines that weren't showing up? Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline and ChronOJohn, this absolutely fixed the problem! Thanks so much for the tip! Hey Product Design Online - an idea for your series that might be helpful if you have the time to put it together: Make a quick video or reference sheet that you can refer to in your videos that shows all of your settings. This way when Autodesk changes the defaults, people following your tutorials can still participate with your same settings. So far the one we discussed in this thread, and the default changing from Y up to Z up have been the only major ones I've come across, but the peace of mind knowing everything is the same would be nice. Keep up the great work. Thanks!

@@emeses7568 Thanks for this - I love this idea. I originally didn't think something like this was necessary as I just used the Fusion 360 defaults. I did not know the Fusion engineers were planning on changing the defaults this much. With that said, the only concern is that most of the time I don't even know they make a change to the defaults, as I've found that they don't always announce this on their blog. I'll likely make a page on my website that I can update so everything is in the same place. Thanks again! Cheers, Kevin :)

can this be 3d printed? hehe

HIi mogu. This one could be... however, you would need to use supports, and it may be tough to clean up the print with that much support. The other option would be to split in half to create a flat surface. Print the two halves and then glue them together. Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline Hi Kevin, Sorry for my late reaction. But I've tried it in a smaller version and that went well. So I guess that is was a glitch in the printer. Could that happen? Cheers, Rob.

@@RAMSies-xz5xb Hi, Rob. It definitely could have been something that went wrong with the slicing, gcode, or printer. Glad to hear it worked though! :)

Hi Remark. The default setting changed from the "Y" up to the "Z" up. You can change it following these instructions - productdesignonline.com/default-settings-for-fusion-360-tutorials/#modelingOrientation
