How to Manually Add Sketch Constraints in Fusion 360 // Welcome to Day #16 of Learn Fusion 360 in 30 days. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to manually apply sketch constraints in Fusion 360.
You may have noticed in the sketch palette there are a number of different sketch constraints. In this video, I’ll explain what constraints are, why you should use them, and I’ll walk you through each constraint by demoing what they do.

This video should be one of the first in the series, as there were times earlier on when my instructor told me that it was a constraint issue when i had a problem. I didn't honestly even understand what he meant, and this would have been a super helpful thing to have seen beforehand. Love these videos and the work you do on them. :)

Hey, firstly thanks for the tutorials! I'm watching these 1.5years after you've uploaded these, so I guess the version difference here creates quite a few challenges/problems. But overall what I suggest you should do is, when you add a demo file (this lesson) or the dog bowl or the phone case, then be sure to say it out or write somewhere, which file format to use. I'm new to Fusion 360 and I think I at least downloaded the phone case file 3 times before I got the right one and twice for this constraints lesson. Maybe seems like a common thing for you, but for beginners, it's crucial information, since the download links offer around 10 file formats. Otherwise, keep up the good work!

Just a note Kevin, for the Perpendicular restraint to work as per the tutorial... I found I had to FIX the left most line in the drawing, otherwise the left line would move rather than the two horizontal lines. Leaving the left line unfixed would cause the left line to change from vertical to slanted. I tried clicking the lines in different order to see if the order made a difference on which line moved. If made no difference, so in this case, the FIX constraint was absolutely required for things to work correctly.

Skipped ahead to watch this and I appreciate you highlighting the finer points that aren't obvious from just knowing what each constraint means (in the geometric sense) - especially the order of selection for collinear. Also it never occurred to me that perpendicular and horizontal/vertical can apply to entities not touching each other, which is useful and awfully obvious in hindsight, aha.

Hi, presumenothing. Glad to hear this overview was helpful. I've seen firsthand how constraints can be a tricky concept for beginners to grasp. I try to break it down in a way that reinforces the many ways they can be applied - I'm glad to hear this opened your eyes to some of the possibilities. In many of the following videos in this series, or my other videos, I demo some other unique things you can do with constraints - such as applying them to spline handles. Keep at it! Cheers, Kevin :)

For the concentric circle, how isn't selection order important? What if you wanted the arc to share the common center with the circle? One thing I have found as I design sketches is to check the constraint icon after drawing EVERY element. A number of times I have gone 4-5 elements down, and couldn't figure out how to constrain the items.

Hi, Brent. That's a neat idea for the painter's tripod. In regards to this demo file - it's a bit misleading. Fusion 360 doesn't show any data in the preview mode for sketches. Since this demo file only contains a sketch it says that nothing is there. Once you open the file in Fusion 360 you'll see the sketch template :)

Hiya Kevin, I'm having issues with not being able to select the second line on the concentric constraint. This often happens, where I can't select a second feature; with the screwdriver for example. When I was working or the tip I had to slice the sketch to be able to select and adjust the second point after I changed the dimension (if that makes sense). Do you think its something in my settings, or perhaps a bug? :(
@ProductDesignOnline

Hi, TwistedF8 pewpewpew. One thing I would recommend trying is setting your preferences back to the defaults. Click your user name in the upper righthand corner > preferences > "Restore Defaults" button > restart Fusion 360 and try again. If the issue still persists after restoring your settings...could you share your file with me? I'll check on my end and see if it allows me to complete the constraint with your file. If so, then that means it's likely a bug. Cheers, Kevin :)

My question would be is that in a more complicated sketch you can get glyphs all over the place, but it is not always crystal clear (or at least I don't see how you can tell), which 2 items are being constrained by a specific glyph. For example, 3 concentric circles, results in a bunch of concentric glyphs, and while I realize it doesn't make any difference for that simple case, being able to tell what is constrained to what (for example collinear or parallel), can be confusing to figure out. Haven't been able to find a good way.

Rud Dog - Great questions!!! To remove constraints simply select the constraint and hit the delete key on the keyboard (I go over that in Day #17 that just posted). When you see the error in the lower-right-hand corner click on the error and it usually (not always) will give you some extra help text. To be honest, the help text is not the best, but if you do a quick Google search it will almost always lead you to the Fusion 360 forum where someone has answered it! Cheers, Kevin

First of all: I love your tutorials! I have two questions: 1) What do the symbols next to sketch in the browser mean? It is either a pen or a lock. 2) Could it be that Fusion gets the color of sketch lines wrong (sometimes)? I have blue geometry that is definitely fully constrained and lines that are black even though they are not fully defined. I can provide screenshots if needed. Thanks in advance.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Frank. Great questions. 1) The lock tells you that the sketch is fully-constrained. The pencil means the sketch is not yet fully-constrained. 2) I wouldn't say it's impossible for their to be a bug, but generally its something small like one point are area of the sketch that is still moveable in some way. If you share the link to your file I can take a look. @@ProductDesignOnline Hi Kevin, I figured out one case of the mysterious wrong colored geometry, but there are two more instances in my file I'd like to get your advice on. Look at: a360.co/38ss6LM Specifically: Drawer_Bottom > Sketches > Front: I made an offset of a projected rectangle and one side is black, the other 3 are blue. Why? Also: Box > Sketches > Side: Sketch is not fully constrained bc of the construction line in the bottom (mirror axis). But even when I toggle it to a regular line, it turns black though its height is not defined. What? I thank you in advance, head over to get you a coffee now. @ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, My apologies...for some reason I never got a notification from your reply. Drawer_Bottom > Sketches > Front - This one has me stumped, and could be a bug. Through the process of elimination, I see that it's something with the offset. What's weird, is the fact that I can recreate the offset after deleting all that geometry, and it works fine - everything is black/fully-constrained. I'll play around with it some more and see if I can find a better reason for why the offset would've gotten thrown off. For the Box > Sketches > Side - It is not fully-constrained because the height of the construction line is not defined. Usually, I run construction lines from the bottom to the top of something so the coincident constraints take care of this. The other option would be to apply an arbitrary dimension (ie 10mm) to the line. Once you do either of these you'll see the lock icon appear. Construction lines are black which makes it a bit confusing in relation to line colors. Great model, btw - and great work keeping it organized, layers renames, etc. Keep it up! :)

Needs a feature where I can select an entity, and it will show constraints on that object and which objects they are constrained to. When you did the "equal" constraint, if you went back into this design later, (or someone else went into it), it would be near impossible to see what objects were equal to each other.

Hi Roger. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I just checked the link and it appears to be correct - but something is going on with the Autodesk360 Hub right now. I've checked several files and all of them are resulting in a blank screen. I would suggest checking back later tonight (assuming that they realize this is happening it should be fixed quickly). Cheers, Kevin :)

It appears empty because the web based viewer doesn't show sketches. Download it as a Fusion 360 Archive, it will ask for an email. Download from your email after Autodesk processes it, then to import into Fusion click file in the upper left, open, choose from "my computer" and select the file.

Hi, and thanks for this video. I do have a question for you. Sometimes, when I’m editing a sketch, and I click on a point, I see 3 time the icon for coincident. How can I find out which one does what? I always end up deleting all three of them, moving the 2 points elsewhere and redoing my constraints.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, Fusion 360 doesn't have an easy way to indicate it. Sometimes deleting one or the other is the only way to check. At times, you can select the lines or end points and it will highlight one of them to tell you...but that will depend on how the geometry is put together.

Hi Darren. Is your "show constraints" option checked in the Sketch Palette? That is strange if only some are showing up it may be a bug or graphics issue. Any update on how this works now? I know the versions have changed since your UI looks different than what I'm currectly using...

@@ProductDesignOnline Hey! I actually ran into something concerning this topic I can't seem to find an answer to.. would you mind giving it some thought if you have time? I'm trying make a ring with cat ears... (using a conic curve on the outer edge of the ring to form the ears) .. I want to be able to constrain the ear(conic curve) so that I can re-size the inner-diameter of the ring to achieve varying ring sizes and have the ear scale accordingly to match the same sort of shape. Unfortunately, right now, if I change the inner diameter.. the curve's sketch point stays where it's at, deforming the shape.. I've tried a few combinations of constraints (including functions based off the ring size), but I can't seem to get something that allows the ear to scale properly... Any suggestions? Is there a better way to achieve this? I'm pretty new to fusion. Thanks!
@uncleswell
@uncleswell 5 жыл бұрын
... Think I got it... I tried using coincident constraints at the point where the curve meets the outer ring diameter.. and set the curve's sketch point to be a given percentage of the ring's inner diameter. Open to any extra input you may have but it Looks like it worked.. thanks!

Hi, Josh. Glad to see you found a solution. I was going to suggest using User Parameters. Typically you'll want to set constraints to everything, then dimensions (with the least amount of dimensions possible, and then you can apply user parameters to the dimensions. This will help make the model dynamic, where it can be updated accordingly, without it throwing off the overall shape of the design. I have two videos where I briefly discuss this approach...this is something I'll probably do more of in the future too. 1) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4SlpHWKgth6is0 2) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4a4d6Whmcx2gqs
