Hey Chris! A good option to separate parts is 3D builder you can add the model in and simply hit ungroup then you have two files to save out rather than having to make cuts and rely on slicer which can be slow on some systems. Just an option for those out there reading this! Great work on the channel loving your work!

This was actually a LOT of help for me specifically, because despite having a laptop that can run crisis 1,2,3, Skyrim, and the Sims 4 it seems to HATE using a slicer software. Course, it's almost 10 years old at this point so... Fair enough lol.

Hello I’ve been trying to get the Mandalorian armor for a while. I got the helmet like from the black series. But I need the rest of the armor. Plus a bunch of other things. Would it cost less to 3-D print them than to buy them online?
@Chriss_Workshop
@Chriss_Workshop Жыл бұрын
Making it yourself is cheaper. But only because people charge for their time and labor. By the time you buy a machine, learn to use it, print the armor, sand, prime, and paint. You could have put those hours into work and earned the money to buy it. It all depends what you want to sink your time and money to. Learning a new skill, or buying it from someone who did it for you
@RobOnekea

Great video bro. Just spent the weekend at SW Celebration and figured, why not just print my own armor... now spending $1000 on buying pre-made armor doesn't seem so out of touch. I'm guessing the painting is a whole other beast. What is your cost if say someone commissions you? :)

No idea. People in those forums are trying to go for 501st applications which requires EXREMELY accurate costumes. Im not after screen accurate. Kind of. The helmet at 100% fits most people fine, but for a better fit you really want to scale it to yourself. The only other armors that would need scaling is the forearms as they need to fit well on your arms. Everything is is just panels that you attach to yourself

@@Chriss_Workshop thank you. I’m looking to invest in a 3D printer of a larger size for projects such as this. I have a question and not sure if you’ll be able to answer, I’ve tried doing a little research online but not sure if I’m asking it right to get the answer I’m after. I have a makerbot mini available at work to use for personal use if I wish. I haven’t tried printing anything yet so here’s where I’m not sure if I’m asking the correct question. Is it possible to print something like this on even the smallest printer? Would just require cutting it into even more parts and more work afterwords. And also if I wanted to print a mini version of the helmet, is it possible to scale the file of the helmet to a smaller print size or would I need to find a different version of the helmet online that is smaller?

To minimize the use of material on the helmet it's better to slice it into three parts (upper dome, left side to the back and then leave the right side to the detailing on the back) uses soooo much less. Of course that means you need to spend extra time assembling after but there is always a trade off.
@Chriss_Workshop
@Chriss_Workshop 2 жыл бұрын
Yes but if i really wanted to i could've flipped it and printed the helmet like a bowl then sanded the marks left by the supports. The trade off is always which do you prefer, longer print time and more material used? Or faster print time and more post processing afterwords. I'll never claim which way is best. Only promote the ways i've done it

16kg ? for this armor ? that total net weight of it came out as 5kg.or less ? so 11kg of support for 5kg for armor ? something is wrong in ur calculations i think
@Chriss_Workshop
@Chriss_Workshop 2 жыл бұрын
That is the total amount of filament used to print everything, according to the estimations given in cura

@@Chriss_Workshop so you have on that table 15kg of armor ? it looks much less... how much did you end up really using ? 5-6 spools ? i mean i have many friends that primted adult mandaloriam armors it never toom them 15kg of plastic... it sounds quit a lot...

This video was recorded over a year ago. All my notes and numbers are here on screen i owned 5 printers when i made this video. So it wasnt as simple as just keep replacing spools, set them to tye side, and count it all up when its done. I was also printing things for myself. Its why i have the grams used next to every piece i printed. The chest for example used a lot of materual because i had it laying down so there was plenty of support material so it didnt fail. The helmet, as many people have reported after printing their own, takes nearly a full spool of plastic with very minimal supports. If you dont believe me, i completely support you buying this model set off do3d.com. load and slice the models in cura. And compare your numbers to my own. A full mando set will take 16 spools based off of what i have

Remember, if you print the jetpack, thats a good 4 spools right there

@@Chriss_Workshop thanks for this reply of yours your awsome 16kg is a lot for this armor..it shouldnt br morr then 6kg for all of it. inc supports i dont know how its 16kg also please be minded to put your own supports will cut this filement in half and using 5kg spools for a job like this will cut costs in half again. the filement price shouldn't exceed 90usd. if it does something is wrong that 600 usd estimate is way overkill i think please refer to this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/ana1eGWZpsx3jdk but you are awsome and dont get it the wrong way i love your videos keep them going friend !

369$ in filament, about what hundreds of hours of print time? how much should I charge for that? 1000$? WOW
@Chriss_Workshop
@Chriss_Workshop 3 жыл бұрын
Im unsure about print time. A lot of these were under a day but spread out with other projects. I charge $500 for this set because of filament cost and time spent. Its a bit pricey compared to others sets but not everyone includes the jetpack like i did

Some companies charge more. Some charge less. You can find free ones elsewhere. But with free files theres always the question on if the quality will be any good

I could print all the armor faster too if I had a huge build surface which not everyone has.

cut it into bits. its what i had to do with the jetpack. a lot of people try to get into 3d printing cosplay with a machine the size of an ender 3. i like to try to enforce that while that is possible, i recommend a cr-10 build volume at the bare minimum

Somehow the math isnt mathing. Isnt 8 grams one yard? If you used 16882÷8=2110yards of pla÷300yards per spool= around 7 spools. 7×$30 is only about $200, not $360. (Unless you bough $50 filament) So unless my math is wrong, im curious how you used 17 spools

I simply used cura's estimates for everything. Which, of course, sucks at actual numbers. However, i never wanted to make this. I made this clear from the beginning to my customer i didnt wanna print the full armor set. So i used these numbers and this video to track everything. I printed across 6 different machines at the time so i couldnt be bothered to track every single gram of filament. So i used curas estimates to get usage numbers, then front the bill to my customer. Force me to do what i dont want to do = upcharge/inconvienience fee
