My biggest takeaway from the video was probably the fact that I need to retarget and nurture existing customers and really focus on building a known brand instead of fishing for one off conversions. The things you mentioned like building an email list via different capture methods and adding things to the site such as new arrivals and best sellers was pretty useful. Thanks for that insight. 1 to 2% conversion rate for startups sounds lousy to me, because i know i need at least 3% to just break even. I now have that, but i'm still not making any profit. Conversion rate is number of visitors divided in number of sales. If you have only 30 visitors a day because the market you are active in is very small, a conversion rate of 3% will probably result in one sale a day if you are lucky. If you are in the US with millions of potential customers, you can make plenty of sales with a conversion rate of just 1% or even lower.

I'm an enterprise customer of Debutify. I don't like it, it's not a true 2.0 theme esp on the product page. Support is US time zone and very delayed. I had the site go out for 12+hours outage due to a plugin issue. I am using Foxkit Minimog theme, thats way way better. In fact it's the best theme and it's just one time purchase, support is Swift and they actually do dev customisations for you. I am paying $150 p.m to Debutify. It's not worth it. Don't get to hung on on conversion rates. I do 500k a year on ebay and I have a conversion rate of .5%...yes that is half a percent, and I have been the #1 seller in my section for nearly 20 years. Who cares if your conversion rate is 100% if you only sell two widgets a year. Its all relative. If your making 10 cent profit per widget...you better have a very high sales volume regardless of your conversion rate. If your making $10,000 profit off a single sale...you can have a very low conversion rate and very low sales volume and still get rich. Money at the end of the day will trump conversion rate all day long.

Ebay is different because that traffic is provided by eBay since they are a marketplace. If you run your own store you need a higher conversion rate because most businesses are paying for their own traffic.
