The 8L45 fluid change is pretty straight forward. You will replace approximately 6 quarts of fluid that is in the pan. Make sure you are on a level surface when doing this procedure. This procedure will be the same for 2017+ Chevy Colorado's and GMC Canyons that are equipped with the 3.6L V6 motor and the 8 Speed Transmission. It's important to note, that it's OK to add slightly more fluid than necessary when you refill the transmission. When you do the fluid level check procedure and remove the standpipe plug at operating temp, the pan will drain down to the correct level. Then you can reinstall the plug and be good to go.
READ THIS DOCUMENT FIRST BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS PROCEDURE.
Link to printable procedure document: tinyurl.com/8L45transmissionf...
Note: While this procedure was performed on an 8 Speed 8L45 transmission, however the 6 speed 6L50 transmission will have a very similar fluid change process. However, it will use a different fluid and filter.

IMPORTANT READ HERE: It's ok to slighly overfill the trans on your initial refill. Because the excess fluid will drain out of the standpipe when you do the level check with the transmission at operating temperature. I added more fluid and rechecked the trans the day after this video to make sure I had enough fluid in it. Hey so is this the tsb everyone talks about? And am I correct in that you wouldn't need to do the 1 week of some cheap dex 6 followed by that again for a week. Then dropping in 6 qts are Mobil 1 blue label? Maybe you could clarify as I plan on doing this Ina week or so. Hopefully i explained that well enough thank you

@@zbandick He showed a "fluid change" as opposed to a fluid flush. In the 8L45, if you perform a fluid change, approximately 1/2 of the total capacity is changed. The total system capacity, including what's trapped in the torque converter, is 11.0 quarts. He's now got approx 1/2 new ATF, and 1/2 old ATF. If you perform this for a 2nd time, you'll have 75% new. A 3rd time will be 88% new. A 4th time would be 94% new.

Quik tip that’s not apparent in the video. You can overfill the transmission fluid, and then when you do the temp/level check the excess fluid will come out. So it’s ok to overfill it slightly to make sure you put enough in. In my video I didn’t explain that very good.

This is one of the best videos I have watched in a long time. I'm planning on doing this on my husband's 2016 Z71 Colorado this Sunday. Very generous of you to share the docs also, triple thanks for that. I am replacing the fluid with the original Delco since that's what it came with from the factory. I had a bad experience when a mechanic decided to put some off brand fluid on my Escalade when I asked him to do a fluid change and the truck never ran right after that. Needless to say I will never go back there again!! I would suggest to anyone doing this, that if you are going to change fluids use exactly the same that has been in there rather than mix brands. I'm going to see if you've done a spark plug change too. Our truck has right about 70,000 miles.

Thanks for the kind words. Just so you are aware, your 2016 will have a 6 speed transmission, not the 8 speed. The process is roughly the same, but there are specific differences. I would suggest watching a few videos that detail the 6 speed transmission fluid change before attempting so you have all the correct info. Good luck!

@@fondupot thank you! I will look up a few more. I’ve seen several over the last few months and essentially the process is all the same, just have to be exact, no joke ruining a transmission. I’ve done all the other fluids several times on all our trucks, and the trans fluid on my son’s Xterra, just not on the Colorado, yet. 😌

@@fondupot It is indeed the same basic process on the 2.8/6L50. You won't have to get the exhaust out of the way, but the seal for the filter has to be replaced separately - it's the type that presses into the transmission case instead of being captive to the filter like the 8-speed.

Thanks for sharing! This is high on my to do list. I bought a new-to-me used 15 Chevy Colorado and have been watching your other videos which have been super useful. I noticed you had a Colorado then moved to a Canyon, so appreciate that all the vids and parts cover both! I might do the same and get a newer model at some point, but in the meantime all these how-to's are top notch. Other than the shift knob and I think the truck bed lights, what other upgrades did you do on your Colorado that you have also done on the Canyon? If there's one new thing I would like to see and if possible is a front camera DIY when parking or tackling difficult trails.
@fondupot

Hey Robert! Just so you know your 2015 Colorado will have the 6 speed transmission in it. The process is roughly the same, but there are bound to be differences that I did not cover in my video. I did have a Colorado, and it was totalled in a parking lot while my wife was at work by a tornado! So I found a low mileage Canyon to replace it. I have considered the front Camera but haven't been able to justify the cost of it. But maybe one day I will pony up the money for the expense. Thanks so much for watching! All the mods to my canyon are well documented on my channel, just scroll through the last 2 years or so of videos and it should give you an idea of what I've done to it.

@@fondupot Thank you for the follow-up! Yes good to know mine is a 6-speed so got a general idea of what's required. Wow on the Colorado, talk about truly totaled! And yes the front camera looks expensive, so understandable on future project.

I’ve not read anything about the shudder fluid you mentioned. But I would be hesitant to add that to your trans, because I have read of adverse reactions with similar products. If you’re having legit shudder issues you should have your dealer diagnose them. Otherwise a fluid and filter swap should be sufficient.

Yea you can do that. Then you’ll have about 80% fluid swapped. Or you can have a legit transmission shop to a full flush and pump in all. New fluid. I don’t think that’s really needed for normal usage, but if you tow a lot maybe a full flush is worth it.

For what it's worth you can do this without removing the exhaust. It's more of a pain but you can unbolt the pan and slide it forward and tip it down. It rests on the exhaust and the transmission. Make sure you have your fluid tray ready to catch the fluid the pump missed (I forgot that part, very messy). Once tilted you can carefully grab the filter and even get to the magnets and wipe the pan. It's not as clean but it worked. It looks like it should slide all the way out but it doesn't due to internal bits of the transmission.

I'm curious if your trans being over filled was due to the TSB flush or it's possible some of the fluid from the torque converter drained out while the truck sat. Either way i might have to do a fluid and filter change on mine after about 30000 km of having the dealer flush mine. I'm getting some unhappy shifting. The trans seems to upshift too quickly and then has to down shift, also tends to hold gears too long before shifts, as well as it started over revving between gear changes for the first few shifts after initial startup and drive Starting to worry my trans is failing at about 117000km or around 75k miles

And I'm being charged almost 1k for labor. Trying to survive with bone marrow cancer, I'm forced to do what I can to save, to be able to make ends meet. If you can provide some information to help me know what I'm looking at will be a great help. I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty sure I can do this job with some helpful experience in your literature. If you're able. Thank you

Maurice, sorry to hear about your health issues. This is quite a project. I've never done a AC compressor and condenser myself, but I think it requires several specialized tools and pieces of equipment. And you'd be exposed to the freon coolant that requires a special machine to capture and recharge. By the time you get these tools, you're probably going to be in the ballpark of the quote you got for $1,000. Best of luck.

Hopefully i explained that well enough thank you
@fondupot
@fondupot Жыл бұрын
This is not a full flush per the TSB. The TSB flushes like 20 quarts of fresh fluid through the trans. It also gets all the fluid from the cooler, torque converter and pan. This gets nearly 100% of the old problematic fluid out of the trans. This video is a simple pan and filter fluid swap. It gets about half the fluid out of the trans. But my truck has already the flush, so this is just a preventative maintenance. I’ll do this on my trans every 25k-30k miles. I would not put anything other than the recommended fluid in the trans. But you can do 6 quarts of the blue label. And then a week later to another 6 quarts and you should have a good amount of fresh fluid in the trans. Definitely swap in a fresh filter too while your in there. Good luck.

@fondupot
@fondupot 2 жыл бұрын
Well if they did a flush it makes sense that they use extra fluid, cuz they will pump it Thru the trans until they’re sure it’s all clean new fluid. But 21 quarts still seems excessive. My goal is to do trans pan fluid and filter every 25000 miles. 6-7 quarts every 25000 miles is only about $60-70. And a filter is only $18. That will keep enough fresh fluid in there to keep the trans running good for a long time.

I shifted thru PRND, and that's all you need to do. Putting the transmission into M or L mode and then clicking each gear (1 thru 8) doesn't actually shift the transmission into those gears, it simply locks out those gears for towing purposes.

@@shaunram5327 That wear material probably deposited into the pan & magnets in the first 1500 miles during initial wear-in. It probably won't have as much on the second fluid/filter service. Some well respected transmission shops will do a fluid change around 3000 miles after rebuild. That's when the bulk of the parts have worn-in. No reason to let the trans wallow in its dirty bathwater after that. Trans service at 3000ish miles, then @ 50k and every 50k after that. Those type service intervals will make a trans last 2x long as most people consider a usual auto-trans service life.
