Great tips mate! I've been playing about 2 years and have only just started to realise I shouldn't be pulling my driver out of the bag on every par 4 or 5. Broke 90 for the first time a few weeks ago by using my 5 iron off the tee alot more and keeping the ball in play! Then scored my lowest 9 hole score of 41 yesterday using the same tactics. Less ego = less shots

That short game practice advice is gold! Can't tell you how many times I've seen guys in our club exhaust themselves on the range before a round and play like garbage. So much less energy to find the face and the low point around the green with a wedge from lots of lies before a round than pounding balls from one. You could totally turn that short game practice into a pre-round warmup video.

I’ve been commenting on a lot of your videos for those just starting like me. I’m 50 years old, just started seriously playing. And one thing I’d highly recommend all of your playas to do, get a instructor, learn golf mechanics via a coach. What I’ve leaned in literally 5 sessions (1 every other week) has easily shaved 5 years of struggle off my golfing. I thought what I was doing was right previously and I was way wrong. So far I’m confident in putting, confident in chipping and pitching, two sessions dialing in my iron swing. 1st week proper grip, addressing ball, and body rotation, now proper downswing and lag to maximize power. Next session we’re moving to fairway woods and eventually driver. I’m not a rich man once so ever, but it is worth every damn penny. Why try and act like you can do it, when you can get a instructor to work with you and expedite the process. Then during that i implement matty boom booms breaking 100,90,80… and so on. I literally using Matt’s theory not only dropped from 111 per round but to a 90 just simply applying his breaking 100 process. It’s amazingly comfortable. Technically he’s correct if you are trying to break 100 you’ll break it by a lot more than you think. The key is 2 putts, chips, pitches, and avoiding silly decisions that cause the game to be stressful. I would’ve shot a 87 but I had a bad luck shot that hit a light pole, then a subsequent bad shot over a cart path. But even then I double bogies for a 90. It’s awesome

Your system is gold. I tried adding a stroke to par each hole. yesterday. Didn't work out great - five holes acceptable. But I felt like I was playing a game rather than being forced to make heroic shots to achieve the unachievable. I would kill to break 90 and your system will allow me to do that with practice. Several opportunities for bogey were missed by three putts or short game miscues. But I felt like I was giving myself a chance to achieve a goal. Thanks, Playa!

I'm not long enough to play Matty golf with irons, but I'm fortunately pretty safe off the tee and with woods. I play 1-3-5-7 woods and 4-5h instead of a bunch of wedges. I do now break into what I think is a pretty good South African accent if I hit a bad shot and say, "well, not where I wanted to be, but we'll deal with it and get closer to the green and hope to make a putt." The other day, I had completely missed a 75 yard drive on a 347 par 4, so I simply brought out the accent and said "no need to panic, just get it closer." A nice clean 3 wood got me to 30 yards for an easy pitch and run to 6' for par. Sadly, I missed it and wanted to burn the course down. I must not be quite be "there" yet.😜

Have to say that I was the guy saying about taking 7 or 8 shots to get to the green, after spending a lot of time working on my short game - which got really good by the way 😁 A mistake I made was always chipping off the front foot. Number 1, as soon as the ground got soft after summer I was screwed, but it also had a knock on effect with the long game. I went for some lessons and found that I was flipping the club, just like I would've done chipping the way I did, so I started chipping off the back foot making sure I was getting small ball first. Time spent doing this, working up through longer chips then half shots really helped the long game. As well as reeling in that over-swing... 🙄😂 Also, I only practiced 1-3ft putts all winter, and come spring couldn't hit a long putt to save my life! Putting to the edge of the green has helped since, using a tee is a great shout that I need to start doing 👍🏼

Playa! Great video. One more thing I'd add about practicing chipping and putting. When you know you can get up and down from close to the green, you get more comfortable aiming for (and missing) greens on approach shots. With confidence, instead of breaking down a long par 5 into 3 or 4 shots to the green, you can start going at the green from longer out, knowing you can recover so long as you play away from the hazards.

You are dead right about seeing a pro. I’ve been struggling with shanks for about 6 weeks and tried every KZbin tip to fix them, with the inevitable result I got worse. Was really thinking about giving up as it was so miserable and embarrassing on the course. Saw a great pro this week, he diagnosed the root cause after filming me for about 10 minutes, gave me a great couple of drills and suddenly I’m confident about how to move the strike point away from the heel. Also showed me how to get exact feedback on strike point. Hit 40 balls after the lesson, every shot well away from the heel. Such a great feeling, went from total fear at address to having one really positive swing thought. Cost me 40 quid for the hour, money really well spent.

I just try to remember what my father taught me when I start hitting poorly. "Hit the ball with your dick, not your arms". What this taught me was the golf swing is actually about hitting the ball with your hips, your arms are just along for the ride. When you swing the club with your arms, you inevitably get that over the top golf swing that can have you hitting the ball everywhere but straight.
@BlackWat3rGTR
@BlackWat3rGTR 9 ай бұрын
Hitting the ball with your hips "turns your arms off" which keeps them and your wrists loose, allowing you to create incredible swing speed. Just think Jim Furyk and Fred Couples.

Good putting and chipping is key to score low. A missed green will not worry you as much anymore, which will automatically give you more confidence when approaching the green, which can even cause you to hit more greens all of a sudden. I personally hit better irons when I am confident in my short game. What you said about turf interaction is so important. I feel like most people only know 1 way to play a chip shot, which will not work from every lie. I will definitely use that tee peg method for my distance control. That's some golden advice...

I’m a 4 handicap and I hit 4i and 2i off of every tee. I’ve found that 20-30 yards back in the fairway is much easier than hitting out of the rough or dropping a ball and hitting 3. I shot 74 a few days ago, I was playing par 5s of 4i, 4i, wedge putt. So comfortable, no overthinking, just hit the ball and enjoy my time being there, my partners, and having some good drinks!

I've done this with my own game. I hit 5i off almost every tee. I know it will go relatively straight and travels 168 yards total distance on average (I'm 60 years old and my distances are not long. I use Shotscope to track my club distances). I break up the remaining distance into parts to allow myself anywhere from 93 - 120 yards into the green. I've gone from a 31+ handicap index to a 23.2 in less than a year, and I'm averaging 98.2 for 18 holes. My next mini-goal is to lower that 98.2 to 93 per 18 holes.

This is so true. My score improved dramatically, I mean like from 120s down to 90s, once I accepted the fact that I wasn't going to get the ball on the green for an eagle putt on par 5 holes with my woods, and that it's okay for me to even aim to get to par 4 greens in 3 shots for a bogey. Don't force it and mess it up. As mid-high handicap players, be realistic with your expectations - you can't aim to make birdies or eagles on every hole.
@tedzink4574

You're correct, even pros can't expect eagles and birdies on every hole. They'll happen when they happen, but they won't happen if you try to force it. Some of the best advice is to give yourself the best opportunity to play better, avoid doubles and worse.

I do send links to some of these people but I'm always conscious of the ones who would take offense at me suggesting they aren't playing the game properly! I know my putting is my big weakness and I really should spend 3 hours practising at my courses' very good putting green but instead, I just play another 18 holes, not really learning anything. Next time, 2 hours at least just working on putting, seeing lines and slopes better and see how I get on after that. Another great, informative video. Hope your Scotland visit was great.

I'm not sure I want to tell any of my friends about Golf Sidekick. I've been improving my scoring just because I've followed (some of) Matt's advice. Instead of watching swing videos where some coach tells me how to fix a problem I may or may not have, I received a lesson last week and my local pro gave me one thing to work on in my swing. The next time I played (after practicing the new swing improvement) I flushed a 5 iron into a green on a longer par 4 that I've historically had issues with. Yes, I then three putted for a bogey but that's the next thing I'll be working on. The point is, Matt is the man and the only one I've found on the internet that is preaching common sense to the average amateur golfer. Disregard his advice at your own risk. Full disclosure, I still take out driver when I shouldn't..... It's a process people and with me a very slow one.

Hmm, I'm not sure what to make about the advice as far as not taking the 3 wood out when I'm 250 away. I checked my ShotScope for proximity data, and when I'm under 50 yards from the pin, my shots are very close to the pin (9 feet from 0-25 yards, 20 feet from 25-50 yards). If I lay up short, I end up a lot further from the pin (45 feet from 50-100 yards, 84 feet from 100-150 yards, and 99 feet from 150-200 yards). I guess i need to work on those 50-100 yard shots and the 100-150 yard shots. Drilling it down, it looks like I need to work on my 5-7 irons. Thanks again.

Are you an 18 handicap? If you’re single figure then the advice for slashing wildly at a golf ball from 250 is not for you
@Drycleanerguy
@Drycleanerguy 9 ай бұрын
@@GolfSidekick I was an 18 last spring. If I compute my handicap based on current rounds, it comes at about 13, and my goal is single digits. I almost always hit my fairway woods well, and I chip well from 60 yards in. My driver and irons are somewhat erratic, some good shots, some terrible ones.

Playah, can you do a video on how you became such a ball striker... I have followed your advice and its got me to some major scoring achievements spending 2/3 of my time putting/chipping, practicing game inside 100. But you rip a 6 iron blade playah, did excessive chipping practice really help you dial in your full swing 3 iron?

This is my issue, I know how to putt and chip well but any shots over 150 I can’t carry bc I don’t hit the ball high enough or have enough speed. Not sure how or why but my swing just does not carry far at all
@tubopedia
@tubopedia 10 ай бұрын
@@jacobcooper7064 You are talking about my exact game dude. I am above average at chipping. But use neutral hands, which doesn't work for irons. When I try and full swing an iron, I release my hands way too early (at impact) and just launch sky balls and get no carry out of it, PW going 50-80 yards its killing me. Really working on lowering my shot trajectory, and also in the realm of chipping and pitching, practicing the low runners, but I am also feel practicing handsy chips messed up my irons.

Golf is about 1. having fun 2. playing well to your abilities. A few years ago I was newer to golf and I'd get so frustrated whenever I didnt make a par (I was like a 30hcp..) Between this channel and other's (like Adam Young) I learned just golf. No need for all these crazy swing videos, videos of yourself trying to analyze your swing (unless a teaching pro is doing it.) Go out there, use the longest club you can keep in play for that hole and keep the game simple. Learn some stats (Lou Stagner is a great resource) and the game gets so much simpler. I'm still not an elite golfer but have regularly started to break 90 and even shot an 80 and 82 in the last year. These tips are great because even if you're not a skilled golfer having a simple mindset on the course is going to help you so much. If you want to break 100 minimize double bogies ++ and shoot lots of bogeys. Want to break 90? Minimize double bogeys and shoot even more bogeys and maybe a couple pars? Want to break 80? Shoot more pars, a couple bogeys and minimize double bogeys. It's all where you're at in terms of skill.

Good advice taking an extra shot to reach the green 🍏. I've laid up on a par 3 in club tournament play. A 167 yd hole but very narrow green OB run off right water left and huge bunkers front. Tap in stress free 4 after a pitch. Scratch golfer had a triple 6 after OB right.

2 things...I think the hacker mentality is I have to always try to smash it as close as possible to the green. Why leave to chance that my 100 yard shot will work, because really, I have NO confidence in my 100 yard shot. Your point...GET CONFIDENCE in those 100 yard shots, or whatever they are for YOU. Then, play toward that confidence. Second...for YOU...Can't tell you how many times someone I'm playing with will say..."What are you hitting here?" Why? Because you hit that club exactly like me? You do you...I used to feel bad that I needed to "club up" compared to someone. Watching these videos has caused me to learn to understand how I really hit with each club, then play the course accordingly.

Hi Matty, can you explain a phenomenon for me? I play extremely well on "harder" (narrow target golf) courses, but on "easy" courses I tend to spray the ball and score a lot higher. Is this a "glimpse" of potential, or am I lacking some focus somewhere?
