If we want people to speak to us honestly, we must be willing to honestly listen.

"If I'm the smartest person in the room, I'm in the wrong room." Sometimes we have to go someone else's room to learn.

According to Malcolm Gladwell it's best to be at the bottom part of the top 20% in whatever room you are in. So you still have a few people smarter than you that you can learn from, but you get the authority and social status that fits a top performer.

Active listening has changed everything about my life. I came to it via NVC for parenting. Super important and has changed the way I am in my relationship and the way I lead my business. Thank you 🙏

Active listening takes a lot of emotion regulation skill, too (something that is severely lacking in education overall)

In both business and life, when we find ourselves in disagreement with someone, the common reaction is to either argue or avoid discussing the matter altogether. However, as Sinek advises, we should make an effort to listen and understand the other person's point of view, even if we hold a different perspective. During one of our sessions, my life coach, Lisa Haisha, provided invaluable guidance. She emphasized the significance of empathy and understanding, particularly in challenging situations, as a means of establishing deeper connections with others. In the realms of business and leadership, where understanding and trust hold immense importance, Lisa's insights serve as a guiding light.

I find this rather a strange perspective on life. Yes, of course it helps to be shown some skills early in the biography, but I think what Simon describes here is learning that just happens while you are getting older. This is what personal development is like. You're not the same you were five to ten years ago. Some skills take years to develop and cannot be sped up. And accepting that, accepting that seniority in life doesn't just come with age, but also with skills and competencies makes it easier for both the young and the old.

Nice explanation Simon. You started of with she believe in some conspiracy theory, does this means back of your mind you still think she was wrong and you are right?

He did go straight to “even if her beliefs are not grounded in fact” auto assuming she is wrong BEFORE listening to her

Not in politics given current situation I just watched two journalists/news anchors I would’t call it talking nor discussing more of screaming match and it was horrible. In another one in the end Palestinian reporter walked off on the regular reporter. You don’t discuss politics and gets ugly very fast, politics, religion those two topics can make or break you. My grandfather who lead 15 counties would often tell me “Dear Olga don’t share your true thoughts because that’s not how politics operates and you can hurt many by doing that”. As a teenager I didn’t understand the depth of his message but now I do. Even when you watch talent shows when someone tells you the truth how they felt about the song sang, if that’s something you don’t accept or want to hear the outcome is always negative. That’s why most talent shows start with positives than say BUT …. Here is the political screaming I was referring to just type “I don’t see them as terrorists’: Pro-Palestinian activist reluctant to call out Hamas”. And you will be able to see how terrible their conversation went .
