How to ACTUALLY Repair & Re-Build A Broken Hinge Tang On Reading Glasses!

A quick video showing how I actually repaired a snapped hinge tang on a pair of reading eye lasses. Most vids on youtube only show replacing screws and rivets, this seemed pretty unique to me, so maybe you can get some ideas on how to repair something of your own.

I love the DIY hinge fabrication. When soldering to certain metals the solder often doesn't want to whet or flow and stick. I bought some La-Co aluminium soldering flux for soldering to... guess what. BUT a bonus I discovered was that the same flux worked for steel too. Now they sell a purpose made flux for Steel but the Aluminium one works just fine.

Smart man 👍 I tried melting the hinge out of an older pair (can't reuse the arm it's smaller) and it's just not doable because it's all one piece

How do you fix a plastic pop in hinge? Mine broke on my Holbrooks. I cant find a replacement nor a repair video.

They sell these replacement hinges, quite cheap to buy and easier and better than to remanufacture one. Just drill out the old one and pop the replacement one in it's place, it's a 2 min repair.

I guess you did not watch the video.... the hinge is manufactured directly to the plastic arm. It cannot be removed.

Chargèro, it seems like a pretty standard glass hinge, they are not manufactured into the arm, they are press fitted into the hole of the temple piece (arm). After you remove the old one by drilling it out you just press a replacement into its place. The little hooks of the replacement hinge grab into the inside of the hole preventing it from backing out. I’ve actually repaired this exact hinge of my own glasses multiple times, since I always break them.

@@MrEvitaerc Interesting, I was never able to find the part. Thank you for sharing. To remove it I wonder if you can just pull it out braking the retention tabs, or twist it some how. Drilling it out would enlarge the hole too much for it to fit properly.

​@@QuaabQueb, You have to drill just a little bit so that the drill destroys those hooks, then the spring just falls out. It can be tricky thou, I repaired one side of my glasses 2 times but in the third attempt, as I couldn't make the spring pop out, I kept drilling impatiently and ended up enlarging the hole just as you said.
