The Marvel show "Legion" uses the medium of television to undermine the medium of television. If ever there was a tv show analog to House of Leaves, it might be that.

*_Years ago,_* I was shown this one short film called _Inside_ about a guy who's being interrogated. If House of Leaves was to be turned into some kind of FMV cutscene game in the vein of 'Immortality' by Sam Barlow, then you could have *_multiple_* directorial styles, a bit of Lynch, a bit of Legion a bit of Inside and whatever the heck else the developers could feel like throwing in for each viewpoint. _And can you imagine the _*_music and sound choices_*_ such a project would yield?_

After watching this movie by Orson Wells, I really thought that he could make House of Leaves into a movie. David Lynch is the second name that comes to mind. He can best convey the surrealism and atmosphere of the house and the psychological breakdown of the characters.

David Lynch would so nail this. HOL is so his genre, his thing. I remember thinking about him when I was reading this book.

I like how this is an honest proposal for an adaptation and doesn't dismiss the concept out of hand as usual.

Haven’t started the video yet but I was discussing this with my friend awhile back. I think you adapt it with a few movies and a mini series that all drop on a platform the same day. You don’t brand them as related (the internet would spoil that quickly) and you don’t imply a watch order. You make the fake documentary as a film, you have what actually happened to the family as the mini series, the old man’s story is a film, the tattoo artist is another and maybe a final surreal film (it’s all gonna be surreal, I guess) that would make more sense when you watch all of them. I wouldn’t go full ARG but the audience should work for it.

This is a sick idea. Doing HoL as an ARG would be awesome.

Although, it's pretty big that Zampano made his sources up. That kinda defeats the point

Sick coincidence. Im reading HoL right now and this whole time ive also pictured someone looking like Jake Gyllenhal as Johnny in my mind. Great on point video man !

The closes of having a House of Leaves adaptation we have is “You should have left” the movie and a DOOM mod called My House.wad. At least with My House.wad there’s an Easter egg of being able to explore The House of Leaves maze.

Absolutely brilliant. This is almost PRECISELY how I've always thought it should be adapted. Side note: This channel is so underrated - you've earned a sub. Hope your vids blow up, as the quality on display here is comparable to channels with much higher sub counts. Please keep the video essays coming!

My thought - and I haven’t read MZD’s teleplays, so I don’t know if he’s already covered this ground - is that Johnny is a tattoo artist with a KZbin channel, where he usually just vlogs about life. And then he discovers Zampano’s documentary about the Navidson found footage. I watch a lot of video essays about film (and this is an excellent one, btw!) and citing academic sources, though usually done in a different format than the written word, is still a normal and expected part of the form. I don’t know, might be good.

This is one of those books that Defeated my friends but didn't go too bad for me. I scared my friends with it saying how I became the book because they didn't see an inch of fear on my face. since then they have not forgotten when I scared them 6 years ago with this. funny part was they introduced me to it, likely wanted to have me scared too but then I read it and defeated it.

I've been thinking since I read it that I would LOVE to see TNR turned into an actual film, Blair Witch style. But I have to admit, I really gave very little if any thought to an adaptation of the whole book. Now, though, I *really* want to see it done in this style!! It would be tricky to pull off, much less to pull off *well*, but it would be *so* interesting to watch.

I just added this to my Greatest Video Essays playlist, I'm incredibly impressed by how well this video elucidates such a difficult to wrangle topic like a potential House of Leaves adaptation. The clips from various films serving as a fan casting of the book characters was a great visual touch. You explained your point perfectly, absolutely no fat. I'm glad I found your video.

I was wondering that too, then I figured it out. Under the dancing pumpkin man, there's a comment of "The real horror is how that previous film, You Should Have Left, rips off House of Leaves". Quick checking on Wikipedia reveals that is the film.

Loved this video, though I do wish I could ask you, ignoring its current state, do you believe that a film would be the best version of an adaptation for the story of house of leaves? I am a student film-maker toying with different storytelling methods and love house of leaves, and I wonder if it would be a more truthful adaptation as a video game than as a movie, with the player jumping between controlling handheld footage of the Navidson record and then a more regular modern video game experience following truant. I bring this up because it seems your video describes your belief that a good adaptation of HOL should include the audience as part of the narrative, so why not lay into that and tell a story where the audience helps push the action?

I feel like Ed Norton would be perfect as Navidson, a young person like Timotheè Chalamet as Johnny, and Sir Anthony Hopkins as Zampanó
@chrisschuett40523 ай бұрын
I would be very upset if Zampanó was ever given an actual likeness. That man needs to stay a ghost, including if there was ever a adaptation for the screen.
