One trick from fine art sketching that I brought with me to photography and photoshop manipulation to understand direction of light is to start with one direction and work through the entire image. So if the light is coming from the top right, I'll start by adding shadows the the left side of everything, vertically, and then move to adding shadows beneath everything horizontally. Personally, I find this helps prevent missing areas, as you move through the entire image focusing only on one specific plane at a time.
@Encreate3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I totally agree with you. If we start moving around the whole image then we are bound to miss out on some areas. Thanks for the helpful tip!

If you need thoughts on what to do next. I would really appreciate a video on how to match levels for composites and making them look like they belong together. Video was really hepful. Just keep in mind that is a LOT easier and time saving to clip solid color layer to the subject layer if the color is leaking. That way you can just paint over the subject and the background but the color will still remain only on the subject because it's clipped to him.

Hi there! I have a few complete manipulation tutorials. You can check them here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ-Zl3VpaqejbqM and kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3TWh5JugLdmeq8 But unfortunately they are one of my least popular videos 😅 As for highlights on a rough stone, the same technique in this video should work. @sarahc.51913 жыл бұрын
Thank u Indro, some tutorials u used the black layer in linear dodge clipped to the subject and then using the brush to paint the color highlight in...is that another method one can use besides this one?
@Encreate3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking, Sarah! Yes both of them use the same underlying logic and will give you the same results. I used that as I had to paint with multiple light colors. If I were to use this Solid Color Fill method, then I needed to clip each color fill layer in that color of the light. So I did it like that on a layer filled with black to speed it up. You can use any one of the two. Although Solid Color Fill will give you better flexibility as you would be able to change the color after you paint the highlights. Hope this helps :)
@sarahc.51913 жыл бұрын
@@Encreate i understand! for some reason, i feel the black layer in linear dodge and painting over it with whatever color u wish seems brighter. But i could be wrong. However, u are right, the solid fill method has more flexibility to change the colors. thank u for introducing this method!
@Encreate3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahc.5191 Sure Sarah! Please go ahead with whichever method you feel more comfortable with. In PS, there is no right or wrong method. It's the end result that matters. You can definitely follow the black layer in linear dodge :)

@@Encreate i learnt that from u and mr 23...before this, i have always just painted with overlay or using the curves channel to increase the highlights then hide it with mask and then paint white to reveal the highlights. that was much easier but i am always open to learning new things. thank u very much!
@Encreate3 жыл бұрын
@@sarahc.5191 Ah...that is something I am exploring, and will soon make a video. I just found out that the curves work the best for highlights. They are soooo natural looking. I got so excited that I keep saying that in all of my videos :)

color fill in linear dodge blend mode + Blend IF gives a better result than Colorize + Blend IF method that Benny Productions Uses. Ah well I guess it boils down to which one suits your workflow better
@Encreate3 жыл бұрын
Haha yes actually 🤗 It all boils down to your personal preference. After all there are so many different ways you can achieve a similar result in PS 😊
@dazz89973 жыл бұрын
Hi! I have one quick question. I have seen other youtubers/videos (like benny productions) use hue/sat layers for highlights instead of solids. Is there a scenario where you should be using one or the other?
@Encreate3 жыл бұрын
Yes, correct! Since there are multiple ways in Photoshop which will give you the same the result, you can use any one of the methods in which you feel comfortable. I also use the hue/sat layers when the highlight is not that strong. Because increasing the lightness in hue/sat can wash out the colors. So for strong colored highlights I use solids. But I switch between them often. Hope I could answer you correctly.

8:44 How did you brush like that? (I'm on mac)

@@Encreate It's okay now, I was talking about where you went from top first to bottom, like the color didn't show at first but once you reached the bottom, that's when it appeared. It's basically shift + click (command is for Mac + PC). But thanks anyways! :D
