As far as drawing is concerned it appears to me that charcoal will result in drawings with the most depth without having to overwork the areas where you want the most contrast, I need to try a charcoal drawing it takes a while to flatten solid black forms with lead. This drawing is excellent the light source focusing just behind her eye is very interesting, the piece would be completely different if the light was moved forward an inch or even half an inch. Great job!

How does he remove charcoal (lighten an area) by rubbing his finger?
@critical_buckel Жыл бұрын
Sticks to his finger.
@JadeLeaf198011 ай бұрын
It’s vine/willow charcoal - it’s very soft delicate charcoal and it doesn’t stick to the paper very well, it creates a layer of velvety dark dust that just sits lightly on the paper surface and it can be swept away or erased with rubber or kneadable erasers or tissues, fingers, brushes, etc. It’s super easy to manipulate and one of the fastest mediums to work with.

@@EhsanMalekiArt Thanks. I’ve tried various smooth cotton rag for archival purposes but even the vine charcoal doesn’t lift as well as it looks like it does with newsprint. What would give similar results to newsprint that would be acid free and thus archival?
@EhsanMalekiArt Жыл бұрын
@@allanpennington Strathmore and Arches both produce archival paper for charcoal, the only catch is you feel precious and not experiment enough
@allanpennington Жыл бұрын
@@EhsanMalekiArt I agree, practice is good with newsprint. I had tried arches hot press 100% cotton water colour paper but even vine charcoal leaves a stain so you can’t lift a bright highlight. Mad Charcoal YT uses arches bfk rives a print cotton rag. I have a piece I’ll try out to see how well vine lifts. At the end of the day I’ll probably end up going darker across all values and the highlights won’t be original paper white but the lightest tone left behind by the vine charcoal.
@EhsanMalekiArt Жыл бұрын
@@allanpennington I see, This is an issue with most archival paper... thats why I opted out, now I work on grey newsprint and after the drawing is done in case I want to archive it, I will fix it with spray and then paste it on sturdy foamboards

Short answer: to add layers in charcoal, mist it lightly with fixative, wait a minute, keep drawing.
@cluek978010 ай бұрын
Better answer: spray a mist of alcohol. It’ll allow more pigment to be placed without gluing down the previous layer
