I have clay soil. I use wood chips from a tree service for mulch in the winter and spring, and in the fall use a broad fork to get them in the ground with a cheap high nitrogen fertilizer.

Two front flower beds have been compacted by 4 inches of garden rock. In the process of removing the rocks and feel like we still have to till the soil a bit before adding topsoil and compost. Best practice? Thank you.

The only problem I have with straw is it can be slippery. Well maybe I have another problem with straw and hay, weeds seeds, they always seem to be adding to my weed problems. Thank you for another informational video 💚🙃

Yes it is slippery. If you get weeds from it - you don't have it thick enough.

I started using a 2" or more layer of straw last year on all of my veggie beds and containers. If it's layered thick any of the seeds that germinate are able to be pulled with almost no effort. It allows water thru and with its light color it does a great job of reflecting the sun and keeping the soil temp down.

Thank you for your vide. I don't have a compost system set up but I was wondering, is it possible to take kitchen scraps like banana peels and other kitchen organics such as greens, canteloupe/honeydew peels etc and run them through the blender and put into the garden?

I have been playing with this. It is a real simple way to get rid of kitchen scraps.

My neighbor swears by that method! She highly recommends blending up kitchen scraps and pouring it around the plants, but to me the process is too “icky”.

So, for ornamentals, is it better practice to apply compost on the soil surface and cover it with mulch? Or does it depend on what plants you got?

compost under mulch, or compost over mulch - does not really matter to plants. Most compost will filter down to the soil either way. Aesthetically, it probably looks better to have mulch on top.

I'm a little confused on how to add compost when there is mulch present. If i have a layer of wood chips or straw, how do i then add the compost from my compost pile? Do i dig up the mulch or just lay the compost on top and wait for it to dissolve through?

Just lay it on top and let nature take care of it.
