If you can't afford such a nice piece of kit you can achieve much the same with Parallel EQ on your return tracks. Add a eq to return in ableton (or other daw) along with compressor in that return track, giving you more boost and control.

High frequencies in general do that, they're what our brains use to localize sounds. Probably because there was no evolutionary advantage to knowing where 60Hz was coming from, but that soft rustle in the bushes at night, you better figure that out fast!

No need for a 'but', the Clariphonic (IME) doesn't replace standard eq's, it augments them. Great stuff Gregory. Quick question tho, It doesnt have a "Link" option Im assuming since i see you turning each side individually. Aside from the MS option would 2 of the 500 series modules basically be the same (L and R independent of each other?) I want to buy real soon but just need to make sure. Thanks
@TheHouseofKushTV4 жыл бұрын
The 500 module is nearly identical to the original 19" model, except it lacks the 'FF' switch (which mutes the dry signal and passes only the filtered signal) and it lacks the Tight/Diffuse switch (it's always in Tight mode, since that's where 95% of users parked it anyway). The MS adds a lot more options, but if you just want the basic Clariphonic sound and functionality the 500 is perfect (and stupid cheap at the moment!).

Either way is great, it's the same analysis as any eq before-or-after-compression. If you put it before the Fatso, you can press the high frequencies back down and thicken and smooth them. If you put it after you can add serious sparkle and restore some of the gloss that's lost after compression :-)

Very Convincing demo that gets me interested. Would the aphex exciter rack mount exciter processor accomplish similar striking results at a fraction of the cost or is that not an appropriate comparison? Are there any users of either that have an opinion? Thanks.
@Halunlimited8 жыл бұрын
Thanks much for your detailed explanation. I started experimenting more with my current Logic Pro X factory plugins. While popping in some EQ, compression and limiter, I unexpectedly found an additional resident plugin called "Exciter" which gave me some additional controls for enhancing my mix significantly in the direction of what I would expect from the Aphex (in conjunction with EQ) so I was pleased. Based on the excellent Clariphonic demo above and the ease with which it seems to reshape the dynamics dramatically in good sounding directions, and the fact that the plug-in is very economically priced and easy to install, I think it's definitely worth a try. It could be a fun alternative virtual knob twister to the DAW controls I currently have. The many positive reviews online also speak well for the Clariphonic approach.
