Want to add fog or fake smoke to your projects? We round up several off-the-shelf ways to add haze or a whispy smoke effect to your photography and prop or costume builds, including two battery-powered devices. Norm tests and compares the MicroFogger 3 Lite with the upcoming Smoke Genie, and then puts them to good use in a figure photo shoot. These compact and portable fog machines generate an impressive output for their size!

I'll be honest, usually Norm's videos have a bit of a "I'm just here to do a puff-piece interview" vibe that I, personally, don't find all that interesting. So usually I skip them. This one I clicked into because of the subject; I'm working on an R5-D4 and figured this might offer options for the "bad motivator" smoke (which it did, thank you). But I was also pleasantly surprised at how much more engaging Norm was in this one. I already knew the best videos on Tested were the ones that went fairly deep into the presenter's own interests and work, and it looks like this fits that box for Norm. Thus, my suggestion to Norm is: do more videos about your OWN making interests. Photography is "making" too! :)

On the AGPTEK, we could fit that into a bottle; cut a hole for the wire, seal that, put a topper with like one of those toppers that turns at 90 degrees...and you now have it contained, no mess, and the topper gives you directional control. (You can fiddle the wire to find the "sweet" spot inside the bottle and still have no mess!)

Great video and thanks for the demos! I just purchased the Micro Fogger 3 and you have confirmed that was the best choice for me. I am doing tabletop photography so I needed something small. It was interesting you contained the fog in a glass. Working on tabletop setups I have to find ways to contain the fog from traveling to the ceiling.

I plan to have fog coming up from the base, I plan to cut slits throughout the base for the fog to rise through, which if these dio you think would work best at a reasonable$$? (No more than $50.00)

I bought a tiny $5 portable humidifier that has that vibrating disk mechanism, and it's shaped like a sort of egg with what looks like an upsidedown funnel at the top where the "fog" comes out of the little tube. I was even able to hold my finger over the little hole and take the lids off and a big plume of fog came out. Maybe something similar to that might work? Edit: or even adding a small bit of a tube or hosing to the little funnel part could direct the fog.

If you are getting into remote photography you should look into one of those portable power units so you can both power plug in items anywhere and to let you have batteries on charge as needed. Yes it would not power high power items but fans and other things to give a needed effect can be useful and with how they just have fans they can even be used on a filming set if the sound guy lets them in.

I love you, Norm, and I love your videos. This is a great one. One critique. If you're gonna be a presenter, practice getting rid of "uh" and "um" from your speech. It was driving me bonkers this whole video. I guess you could edit them out but then it would be all jump cuts like a bad vlog. I ignored it best I could though because I love this channel and your videos and I've been refraining from making this comment for a while.

As someone who speaks for a living, I feel this is only important if you're trying to stick to a script. If they're presenting something ad lib, it usually feels much more relatable to have someone speak as though they are having a conversation, not just preaching to you.

As a member of R.O.T.S.G.O. (royal order of tool safety guardian overlords) I should tell you that you shouldn't make a habit of holding ultrasonic transducers underwater... This one is probably mostly harmless, but it's still bad practice. The ultrasonic transducers in ultrasonic cleaners cause nerve damage with prolonged exposure, couple seconds to minutes exposure depending on the machine. Mush love, tape care of yourself out there.

A few years back at a halloween convention, i saw a burning zombie costume for sale. The costume had some sort of trickling fog effect that went all through the costume. I'v been trying to find a similar effect to that trickling smoke effect that will work. My idea is to do something similar to like a constant, low, trickling effect of something lightly burning for one of my costumes. Have no clue what to do though.
