How to add some weight to the base of your Stonfo Vise

Good idea with the bb's. However I think you just need a better idea for the base! We have converted all of our portable tying stations and home locations to drill chucks from hand drills! I no longer carry a five lb., base with me. The drill chuck weighs maybe two-three ounces and holds the vise like its in concrete and looks really great! Love it!

Find a buddy that reloads shot shells for trap or skeet, lead #9 shot is tiny. It will add more weight and have a lot less wasted space in the base.

Good idea. I almost cracked open some shells to get the buckshot but figured bb’s would just be easier

The mentions of using lead shot any smaller than your BB's probably isn't a good idea. Your BB's are large enough to be isolated from the metal plate by the plastic dividers. Small lead shot could fall into the cracks along the plate. I checked my base to see what king of material the steel plate is made of. It appears to be a low grade stainless? It had a low magnetic attraction. And the screws are carbon steel. Using lead or copper probably isn't a good idea at all? "Galvanic" corrosion. Now you have a 3 way mix of metals by adding copper or lead? Lead degrades on it's own. And copper will patina corrode with the slightest hint of humidity. Both can migrate to that stainless plate in an enclosed space. And if you ever spill a drink on your bench and get the base wet inside .... You may open that up one day and find a massive science project happening on the stainless base plate that's migrating through the screw to your vice post. The transformer is a "life long" quality vise design. Go with the design. Stainless steel balls (of any size) would be the right choice.

So a $3 box of yard sale 12 ga shotgun shells could give you closer to 2# of finer diameter lead shot. ( All you need to do is slice the ends open with a box cutter and the shot will pour out..)That would likely give you allot more weight than what you get with steel BB's.

Shotgun shells at a garage sell. You must not live in a state where people hunt and fish. That stuff sells for premium pricing on the classifieds. But it is a good idea. I wish I could do tungsten. But at that price I should just buy a heavier base

My Stonfo elite jams a bit when I rotate so tried to release the knot in the handle to grease it but no matter how much I try I can’t unscrew it, have you tried that before any advise on how to release it?

I’d reach out to stonfo customer service. I haven’t taken my vise apart like that and it’s smooth so not sure how I can help

Yup. Maybe. Haven’t priced them out. I just had the bb’s close by. Tungsten beads would be ideal but then just buy a base 🤪

I want to use it a bit longer before doing that. But so far I am really liking it. The way it grips the hook is pretty awesome. Just ordered the midge jaw today so maybe I should have gotten the transformer

@@justaguy111 I would check with Stonfo on the actual range but I have tied a wide variety of sizes, I cant remember how big exactly since it has been a moment since I have used the vise.
