Thanks for making this. I've been doing some 3D modeling but I never dove in to the UV unwrap stuff because it seemed really complicated. Your video definitely eased me in and helped me understand some of the fundamental aspects like using the seam tool and edge select. Thank you!

The common problem with uv mapping tutorials is that they almost all explain on a 4 sided cube, when in fact we need information on more complex models, and to know where and why we mark seams there.... i want to know why it unwraps the way it does when you mark the seam, i need to understand the reason behind it, why its like that and its not 4 different squares. And why hasnt UV mapping progressed in 20 years?
@justnotg00d3 жыл бұрын
6 sided cubes show the base procedure. A complex model like a person's face will be done using one technique, yet a car another. Every single object (mesh) you create would be unwrapped differently. I agree that a more complex mesh would show more, but putting that in a short video would not be easy. "... progressed in 20 years?" The answer is easy, John's Law #1, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" It works, if you have another way, let me know. I don't know if there is one yet, but I foresee a program to unwrap by pressing a button to do it for you.

So I an working in a packaging company.... we mainly do lift of lid boxes...... how would you go about uving that? As you would have to delete a face to account for the Box. Then once you have done that the uv will not auto do.

No matter what I can't get the uv map of my object in the left in the uv editor. I've unwrapped the object too! When I select other objects that already were uv unwrapped, their uv map doesn't appear on the left either! Do you have any ideas on how to help? Thanks.

7:19 I can't reproduce that on my computer, the texture won't change as I ajust the UVs, is it a setting issue?
@3DTinkerer5 жыл бұрын
It won't show the applied texture? Make sure your objects UV maps are unwrapped. Textures don't show up otherwise. Otherwise maybe just double check you are changing settings for the correct object.
@Rarirama5 жыл бұрын
@@3DTinkerer Yes. I'm certain they are unwrapped, I even created a new scene with just a cube and it still won't work. I posted the issue here if you wanna have a look: blender.stackexchange.com/questions/151083/texture-in-3d-view-wont-update-as-i-manipulate-the-uvs-in-the-uv-editor
@Rarirama5 жыл бұрын
I managed to solve it, the solution is in the link above. The thing is that if you just select blender's default checker or brick texture in the base color menu you'll need to add aditional nodes to make it work. I know you showed this step in your video, but I thought that it would work the same way for these textures I mentioned. Still, thanks for answering!

I am trying to unwrap sections within a model and assign em seperately but cannot keep em separate as they always go back to one texture again because I am not assigning at the right time ,, you are not explaining how I would do that so I think I need to know how to assign each one so it stays put right can you tell me how to do that

Great tutorial, though i would like to know how to put a texture on a certain part lets say the top and front of the cube, how would you do that cause i have a complicated creation I'm doing and i need to texture certain parts of the body. if anyone or you could help it would be really appreciated.
@3DTinkerer5 жыл бұрын
Well the industry standard nowadays is to export the UV unwrapped model to a program such as Substance Paint (not a free program). These programs allow you to paint in the 3D view so you don't have to worry about which UV you are applying a texture to. Blender does support texture painting but it doesn't have as nice of a workflow as Substance Painter. Try googling "Blender Texture Painting" for more info.

What if it is an imported 3d object and not able to check uv-map?
@3DTinkerer5 жыл бұрын
If the objects was UV unwrapped before it was first exported it will keep that UV layout when it is imported into Blender. It can be hard if the object isn't unwrapped because FBX objects are converted to trigs from quads on export.

@3DTinkerer5 жыл бұрын
There should be a little + button (or maybe a "new image button")at the top center of the UV editor windows. When you click it you can enter a size for your image then save it.

Blender 2.83 will take a PSD file in directly for a texture. So you didn't have to export it to PNG.
