Awesome info. I have a members mark I was ready to trash because of the temp swings.

Awesome job Tom! I just bought this for my wife at Tractor Supply and it is now called the "Even Embers" SMK8028AS pellet grill. The quality of this grill is amazing for the money. I might do this upgrade for her. I have a conventional wood fired smoker but this will make it easy for her to cook and smoke on, as she has been working from home. Just fill the hopper, set it and forget it(to an extent). She doesn't have to deal with fire management just setting temps and keeping the hopper filled.👍

Hey Tom, I did the upgrade and it does indeed keep the temperature spread within 5° of the set temp. I was doing the initial burn in or first firing and I had it set to high to get it started and as per the directions lowered the temp to 350° for around 30 minutes. It started putting out some yellowish heavy smoke at first and I thought the fire dept. was going to be called it was so thick, but it cleaned right up and started making clean smoke. My Even Embers connections were labeled with color coded stickers instead of the wires and had me scratching my head for a minute, but I was able to figure it out. I am really looking forward to cooking and having my wife using it to smoke dinner all day. 👍

Hi Tom, I'm experiencing burn back. I changed to the correct auger motor and fan, but I'm still having burn back on the shut down cycle. Can you please take me through your shutdown process? Let's say you were cooking a bird at 275/300. Once your bird is ready, what would you do to turn off the grill?
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Жыл бұрын
Thanks for Watching! one of the things I do is to turn off the grill before opening and pulling the food. If you do it after, the PID is dumping pellets and firing up to catch up on temp. Keeping the burn pot clean after each cook is important too.

So a PID replaced your " computer". It can in theory go on any grill as long as you find a way to mount it correct? I have a Oklahoma Joe s rider where I think the computer when out, it keeps tripping gfci even with a new igniter and gfci outlet. OKJ sent me a while new pit, so I'm wondering if I could just replace the computer/controller on the old one to get it working again.

Hi Tom, I have $1000 budget to spend on a pellet smoker. I am torn between rec tec stampede, Grilla silverback with PID controller or the stainless pellet pro 770. I really respect your knowledge on the subject. Please steer me in the right direction as I’ve never seen these units in person. Thanks.
@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ5 жыл бұрын
Bill Dobberpuhl Thanks for Watching Bill! I have not seen or cooked on the Silverback so I really can't speak of it other than what others have told me. Had a Rec Tec Mini for 2.5 years then started having lots of pellet jams and controller issues to the point that I couldn't use it anymore, warranty was up and the part were to expensive so I gave it to my son who is trying to make it work. When it did work it worked well. As you know I have a Pellet Pro, it is an impressive unit, Heavy gauge steel and 100% Stainless were they have it. The legs are thick gauge tubular steel with nice rollers and casters, the PID works very well in most cases plus or minus 5 degrees. The warranty is awesome pretty much 7 years. The lid is shaped to allow for more room and the double shelves are huge. The Heat Deflector and Grease tray are thick to the point that they will never warp. So that would be my choice. All three will work well out of the box, but in the long run the Pellet Pro is built to last. Hope this helps!

I've had this same grill for a few months now and have been looking for an aftermarket PID controller. How have your cooks been with this controller? I'm looking forward to hearing back from you.

How have you been cleaning the greats? I have had this smoker for two years and have been very worried about damaging the coating. So I end up spending a lot of time cleaning it.
