Happy to see another long-term Luxx user! Still using and maining my worn-out launch paddle, and while I've cheated on it a bit, I always came back. In the right hands, I really believe it's one of the best and most future-proof paddles. Even in the current power landscape, proper technique and smart playmaking still have the edge.

Jordan, would you recommend people to start this well after they've mastered flat faced shots, or do you teach this earlier to develop new habits, then build accuracy? I think this concept is more add-on once the basics are covered. Are there two schools of thought here?

Depends on their background. But the concept of topspin is so important as players grow their game.

So are you keeping an Eastern grip while at the kitchen? Because if the point speeds up do you have time to switch back/forth between grips or your opponent is switching between a forehand/backhand dink?

My thought exactly. How can you counter on the backhand side in Eastern?? I tried switching and gave up. Seemed impossible.

Pros do it all the time, as do I. The 4 options are: 1. Learn this topspin technique in a continental grip, which will get some getting used to but will put you in a good counter grip. 2. Learn to counter with two hands, which will help you reload quicker. 3. Switch grips right after you speed up the ball to continental (which I do) 4. Get comfortable with countering in an eastern grip.

@@BrionesPickleballthanks for the great reply. Working on #1, yeah, it’s awkward. Really like #3, gonna give it a go!

Great instruction as usual. One thought, it appears like a lot of the motion is in the elbow, which you didn't mention
@firebreathingrubberducky562114 күн бұрын
I think he refers to it as pronation
@BrionesPickleball14 күн бұрын
It’s pronation, but does look like it’s turning from my elbow, yes. It’s the forearm turning over, and also bicep contraction.

I actually hit my cheek today doing this topspin.....
@BrionesPickleball14 күн бұрын
I’ve done that a few times….

When you whip the paddle upwards, do you ever accidentally hit yourself in the face? I did that once and scared me away from topspin
@BrionesPickleball14 күн бұрын
This is why I use the pronation method 90% of the time. If you’re hitting yourself, then work on hitting the ball more out in front and more UPWARDS, away from your head
