This is a video to show you how to adjust a Three speed on the column to prevent the infamous hanging up between gears. Hopefully this video helps someone to correct this problem.

I have been tinkering with the adjustments for 2+ years. I have taken my truck to four different shops. One of which was a "Classic Car/ Truck" shop. Nobody could get my "3-on-the-tree" adjusted correctly. It was ALWAYS getting stuck between 1st and 2nd gear. They all kept blaming it on the play at the column bowl. I watched your video a couple times and then hit the garage, following your video. Low and behold, once I put the screwdriver between the two connectors I noticed that one was about a 1/4 inch below the other. Once I evened them out, the linkage tightened up and now shifts between all four gears with ease! Thanks a TON for your video!

Luke, thank you sir. I've been all over the internet trying to find someone who made a video about early Chevy column shift adjustments. These trucks get modified and turned onto hot rods so much, that it's hard to find info on an untouched daily driver. I've had the shifter of my 1961 Apache jam up when I'm out and about. Being that I'm female people love to gawk at a girl who's pulled over with the hood up and nose in the engine area trying to clear the jam. Thanks to you I could fix this issue at home and take "Miss Betsy Louise" out in public again. It's great not having to wind the engine and transmission just to take off in 2nd or 3rd gear. Just to be on the safe side, I did end up removing 50+ years of built up goop and rust before tightening it all back together. Thanks again - you're a great shop teacher. :-)

THANK YOU for this video! I've been suffering with the 1st to 2nd lock up with my '59 Chevy for some time and thought I had it under control when it happened again 3 days ago. That's when I went hunting and found your outstanding video. The major difference is closing up the clearance between the levers is accomplished by turning the INNER sleeve....removing the screws is not necessary, only loosen them enough to allow the inner sleeve to turn. That and a small adjustment on the 2nd/3rd shifter link cured my problem. This issue is not addressed anywhere in the 1958 Service Manual OR the '59 Supplement so thank you again!

Great stuff, Luke! Thanks for sharing. The jamming issue with the 3 speed column on my '49 is a little different - one badly worn bushing, one non-existent bushing, occasionally causing the loose linkage to bind up - but your clip inspired me to go out and take the closer look that helped me figure it out... Thanks again!

Oiram Nojertsac if the steering wheel wobbles around and the column itself doesnt move around then its probably the upper steering shaft bearing. It's letting the wheel move around, it's hard to diagnose something without seeing it but thats what I would check first.

Thanks a lot. I have a '67 pickup. Sometimes you can shift it into first/reverse and sometimes not. The shift lever will not come towards me sometimes, which prevents first/reverse. Let it sit, and it will "fix" itself for awhile! I was thinking the mechanism on the column had a broken part in it. Will try your adjustment first and see if it frees up the shifter. Luke I’m having problems where I put my 3 16ths drill bit/ screw driver through the centre of the two arms so they line up correctly, which at first they do absolutely splendid, i tighten it up and then within a few goes thru the gears, the front one sags justtt a fraction, also for some reason mine doesn’t have that slip collar/sleeve that once tapped with extension it forced it tight via the slanted slot! It’s just the bolt and the slanted notch but no collar. I have this problem and it’s the only thing stopping me driving my dream car- I wish I could teleport you to Texas quick. I am so very great full for your video and I’m going to fabricate a collar I guess and try tighten it maybe that will eradicate the limp front arm... what a nightmare for a very low skilled mechanic like myself haha. I don’t wanna give up but it’s certainly kicking my ass and I know one I can go from 2nd to 1st without a jam I’m gonna be so stoked. 😫

Hello Luke Fugate thanx for the video on the 68" 3 on the tree adjustment. I recently bought I 68" c-10 Chevy Longbed. My question I have is for my 69" GMC 3 speed saginaw. Originally it was 3 on the tree, but someone installed a direct floor shifter before I got it. Every now and then the gears would get stuck while I'm driving in traffic. I would have to pull over and wedge a screw driver between the shifter rods and break it loose. I am now in the process of installing a new Hurst shifter assembly. The problem I'm having is the transmission I believe is stuck in 2nd. or 3rd. Not sure because the sloppy linkage. So I drained the fluid and took off the old linkage and removed the Gear cover plate and internal shifter arms. I'm not sure if something is wrong with the transmission gears. Or if I'm just not installing the cover and the internal shift arms properly. I'm able get the cover on , and move the gears closest to the driveline. But not the gears closest to the clutch
@lukeFugate8 жыл бұрын
I have never had to take my transmission apart yet so I'm not familiar with the internal components. There is a great forum you could check out at 67-72chevytrucks.com/ There are some good people over there who will help you out.

As I got home, cranked up the engine and I Can't even push the lever up to get it into reverse. I'm hoping this will fix the issue. Otherwise...does anyone else have any other ideas? I can still shift into 1, 2, and 3 but can't for the life of me get that thing into reverse.

I ruined that clutch on my father's '75 Malibu while getting it out of traffic while it was jammed halfway into 3rd (it usually got jammed between 1s & 2nd, but it seems that it got jammed with the "finger" in 2nd and the lever in 3rd. Anyway, it cost him $180 and he wasn't happy; I've always wondered if these ever got stuck with both levers engaged and had the gears blow out. Too bad there wasn't a YT back in 1980. Thanks for posting.
@lukeFugate5 жыл бұрын
I would say it was better to burn out the clutch than to get it hit in traffic so I think you made the right decision. These take a lot of maintenance, but I like a three on the tree.

Love this video, such a big help! I have a '70 C10 which I bought as my first vehicle back in 2015 when I was in high school, and it's also a 3 on the tree. Recently, the arm sticking out of the column attached to 1st and reverse (not sure what it's called exactly) had snapped right in half, and the rod fell right down into the engine bay. Luckily I was in the parking lot of my work when it happened, but I wasn't being rough with it, just backing my truck into a parking spot like I always do, then "clunk!" and I was rolling forward instead of going in reverse. So now, I've been looking for a replacement part, and it's nearly impossible to find any. I had a good friend of mine weld the piece back on (luckily it was a clean break and not in several pieces). Hopefully the weld holds up for a very long time, if not, I might have to look at other options. Does anyone on here know where I might be able to find 3 on the tree parts/anyone selling parts? Also, are there floor conversion kits for a 3 on the tree transmission? Thanks!
@lukeFugate3 жыл бұрын
You are right. These are very hard to find shifter parts for because the majority of them were converted to automatics or floor shift. A floor shift conversion is available and from the information I was able to find this is a link to that, amzn.to/3pJSg6V. It seems a little pricy to me and I think if I were going that route I would swap in a four or five speed if it were going to be on the floor anyway.
@marcellodepaolo93863 жыл бұрын
@@lukeFugate Awesome! Thank you for that! I will have to look into that, but I was also thinking of doing a 4 or 5 speed as well, however, my truck has the small hump inside the truck for a smaller transmission, so I'd have to find one that's not too big and fits it. But for today, I'm going to put my steering column back in the truck (I had the piece welded back on) so hopefully that lasts a little while 🤞thanks again!

My clamp was broken in half that takes the slop out of the linkage. I only had the back half of the clamp. Hopefully this resolves my issues.

I couldn't find this information anywhere without doing a lot of research. I figured if I made a video of it it may help someone.

I have a 77 K10, looks different then this. The bolts that hold the cover on are on the back, doesn't seem to have any cam adjustment either. Friggin nightmare trying to get this figured out.

Ive completely rebuilt my transmission and 3 on tree column in my 86 C10. i can not seem to keep ear from catching both Rev &1st lever and 2nd/3rd lever at the same time. Shift feeling from inside cab is horrible, i feel as though i am in perpectual neutral. This is a later style 3 on the tree so it is slightly different from yours. very frustrated and really dont want to remove the character from this truck.

Not sure how later versions worked. It sounds like it may need adjustment, there should be a bolt somewhere on the column that can be taken loose to move the levers apart more. I wish I could be of more help, but I just don't know how the later ones work.

@@lukeFugate Thank you my friend. I appreciate the time. i am at a place where i may just have to cut a hole in the floor. I have run out of options unless i completely rebuild this column again. Frustration!

On my 68 chevy pickup. Pulled out the shifter handle, sprayed some W-D 40 in hole it came out of, replaced the handle , shifts like new or better. Thanks everyone.
