How To Adjust An Inhibitor Switch

Inhibitor switch adjustment. An inhibitor switch detects the transmission lever position and sends the information to the vehicle's computer. The computer will only allow the vehicle to crank (or start) in either Park or Neutral. If the computer detects the lever is in a reverse or forward gear, the vehicle simply will not crank. This prevents the vehicle from jumping forward or reverse upon starting up.

Thank you for this video! I know it’s old, but I took my switch off and when I put it back car would not start. I was baffled as to why it would not start unless I bypass the starter relay. Then boom watched your video and fixed it in five minutes. Thanks again!

Works perfectly for a 2000 Subaru Outback (even the same Allen key size). Passenger side of transmission/go under right behind right front passenger tire/no shields or covers to remove.

gr8 vid, my 2001 maxima sometimes maybe 15% of the time, doesn't;'t start u ntill I move it out of park and back into park. then works. or I can start in Neutral. going to try this first before replacing switch. its been like this for 3-4 years. but now getting worse.

Thanks for the video. I have a question, I bought a transmission replacement for my Acura Integra 2000 (both transmissions are automatic). The transmission that I bought has a Transmission Range Switch and my old transmission (the one the car came with) doesn't have one. Should I install the purchased transmission without plugging the transmission range switch, just leave the cord hanging out? Thanks!

My car just started doing this and it will only start in neutral after it’s been sitting overnight but this doesn’t happen all the time sometime it starts when it’s in park after I start the engine in neutral and restart again ...does this mean I don’t need a new sensor and just need to adjust it ?

Very inforamtive! But I have a question, my inhibitor relay sometimes does not work so I have to remove and clean it. Does it affect the transmission performance? sometimes I feel a little shift shock esp if its going up hill. Thanks mate!

Will not effect performance. Does not control gear shifts. Just signals the position to the vehicle

How do I know what gear it’s in because on my 1992 Pathfinder if I push up on the floor shifter it starts but if I leave in park w out pressure pushing forward it won’t start

great videos , question though , my 96 maxima/infiniti, has no code , should it ? it is aligned per your video .. I did try and short the starter , sparked but didn't turn . would that indicate a neutral switch too ? this issue is driving me nuts ! To your knowledge , is their anything else that would cause a no start , no crank? battery is good , no codes relating to the inhibitor , ignition etc . ..

If you apply direct battery current to the starter is should turn. Sounds like you may have a bad starter. Also check if battery power is getting to the starter. I show on how to do this around half way in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2nRaoKQm9x-qK8

Thanks for the reply , subscribed as well . if you're interested , I put a paper clip in the 6/7 pins in the inhibitor relay ... now its cranking , but no start , lol .. Thanks again .

Thank you. And it's common not receiving a code if the switch is out of alignment or just getting old. This also worked on my '97 Maxima: If the starter wouldn't crank in park or neutral, just shake the shifter. The starter would always crank right after.
