A bit of toe is good in some cases ( like .3 degrees, it's small but helps things like steering) but great video it explains everything spot on

You are correct. Thanks for the input.

Rear wheel drive requires more toe, due to the fact that the front suspension is not being loaded and unloaded during power and coast situations.

I did a friend's alignment a while ago and he said I should put it on youtube to help others save money on something so simple. I'm glad I did. Even paying a shop doesn't guarantee that they will do a good job. I've seen where it comes out worse than going in and they use expensive machines! We do it with basic stuff. Doesn't make sense does it? I'm very happy to save you and others their hardearned money. Pass on the tip to someone who needs it. I'll take my bow now ;)
@deadgodanubis9 жыл бұрын
jcreswick If your car calls for them to be parallel, then it doesn't matter too much if the steering wheel is off by a bit. But if your steering wheel is off by quite a bit, and it wasn't before, then that's whey you look for the problem and figure it out. In your case, if they are both off, then I would start with first centering the steering wheel and adjusting just the driver's side wheel until it lines up with the rear wheel. Once yet that part, then you can start adjusting the passenger side front wheel with the tape measures. So it's just an extra step, and not really all that difficult. Then after doing the adjustments, roll the car back and then forward to make the car settle into the adjustments, re-check the toe and see if you need to keep adjusting. When you take it out for a test drive, just note the position of the steering wheel when you're driving straight. This will tell you if you need to keep adjusting the wheels to bring the steering wheel closer to the center. It's just a matter of being patient and adjusting a bit and checking. But it's totally do-able. Hope this helps you out.

I've had friends that describe the same thing you just did. After an alignment at a shop, it drove worse. And you might think your car has a bigger or different problem. I don't know if they're actively trying to rip you off, or if they're just incompetent and don't know what a good alignment should be. Either way, it's a waste of hard earned money for the customer. I'm very happy to help you and others with this. And thanks for the compliment! I'm always happy to help out a friend where I can.

I've done it this way and never had a problem with my car, truck, van, other truck. So after years of driving it this way, wouldn't I have a problem if this was such a horrible demo? If someone proved to me that my car was unsafe, I would delete the vid. But I appreciate your comments. I did it for people like you and I'm glad it's helping people.

I once took my car to a mechanic and I told him I needed an alignment because my car would pull to the side, I thought he would put the car on some high tech machine, or lift the car and check the entire suspension. He told me to drive with him around the block. He than told me to stop, I saw him get out. When we got back he said your car is fixed, startled I was like for real. What he did was he took some air out of one wheel to make it aligned , talk about bootleg repair, Great video man.

Hey, everybody! Get off the man's case. He stated that he is NOT a mechanic. This video is primarily directed towards those who probably did a necessary repair to their car and currently don't have the $70 for an alignment or cash to put towards a new set of tires..(which is what you'll need after you get done wearing them out from not doing anything to the alignment) Thanks for the vid. I know this video was put up 9 years ago but all the same appreciated for the fantastic information. I would suggest that you keep total positive toe-in such that it totals 0.8mm or 0.4mm each wheel toe in. This is to take up slack in the joints while braking. If you accelerate hard more often than not then the reverse of total out of 0.8mm. It is always better to have toe-in than toe-out.

The only thing I can add is that if you take the difference between the front of the tire and the back and divide by two. That should be the distance that you should move the tie rod nut in order to make the zero toe that you are shooting for. Thanks for the video. I am going to try it tomorrow. I love doing this type of stuff on my own and NOT paying someone else my money for something so simple. Thanks again. Great Idea!

Thank you, you did answer. Basically, using hammer to losen the jam nut is OK. I saw few videos with folks using hammer, but in all of those they were replacing a damaged tie-rod end, so I though they had nothing to lose by using a hammer. But, you have provided me with the information I was looking for. I will not use the hammer and be sure I am striking it in the direction to losen it (clock-wise on my car to take it away from the tie-rod end. Thanks again.

I'm glad you found it useful. When something is off, the tires go bad really quickly. If you spot the problem soon, then you could probably still use the tires and not have a problem, even if slightly worn. But when you let the problem go longer, then it's best to get new tires instead. Good luck with it. Thanks for the comment!

I think so too. I tried to do it with strings once, and it's a pain in the ass to set up at the right height and distance to the wheels. Plus, it doesn't work for all vehicles. There are some cars that have a wider wheelbase or wider tires at the rear than the front, so it won't work for those. There are also big trucks with 2 wheels on each side at the rear, so the string method won't work there either. Try it out and let me know how it goes! Happy you liked it!

Very informative.."word for word" so to speak. I'd just like to add that the way I do it is very similar except that I use two pieces of ground flat bar ( Highly accurate and straight) which I hold flat against the wheels horizontally. ( 2 people needed here though) Having the flat bar further away from the wheels would give a more accurate reading. With both people holding the tape..first front and then behind the wheel the toe-in or out can be measured and then the normal procedures applied. What I do is also roll the car backwards and forwards again before measuring again to bring the wheels back to their natural position. Either that or jack one wheel up off the ground so there is no resistance. Once again....good vid!
@deadgodanubis10 жыл бұрын
Glen Kolm I knew I wasn't the only one that did it this way. You do it similarly. Although I came up with this on my own, I know I can't be the first person to think this method up. Your way is good too. But I never have help when doing car stuff, so I figured I would show how to do it by yourself. But an extra set of hands would be nice. But that works too. And rolling the car back and forth is key too. I forgot to mention it in the video, but added the annotations to the video that I hope helps someone. The joints and tie rods do eventually allow a bit of give when they start to show their age and mileage so I suppose you're right. Maybe that's why in my manual it shows the toe should be at zero with + or - 2 mm, I think. Maybe it's too allow the conditions you describe? It makes sense to me.
@GlenKolm10 жыл бұрын
deadgodanubis Yep..true bud. All minds put together can come up with some pretty great ideas. Better than paying big bucks at wheel alignment centres where you're not sure whether they've done the job properly or not. Last time I took my car in for new shocks I asked for the alignment to be done. Steering felt weird though so I did it myself....only to find that the toe-in was 18mm! ( almost 3/4 inch) Geez!
@deadgodanubis10 жыл бұрын
Glen Kolm Damn! That is excessive toe. Same thing happened to a friend of mine recently. It was put on a fancy, expensive laser machine for a full alignment. He drove it home and I drove it days later, it felt so bad. Like the car wanted to lose control of itself on the freeway. I don't know if he ever went back to get a refund or not, but I adjusted it for him and it felt instantly better. Not all places rip you off, and I rarely take anything to a shop, but when I have to, the majority that I have personally dealt with have always lied to me in some way. I'm not a mechanic but I know enough to know when I'm being lied to. It's either flat out lies, or an embellishment of the problem, or they just suck and don't know what the problem is. A toyota dealership I took it to once gave me an estimate of almost $3,000 because they added so many things, when all I knew I needed was a control arm. The Jiffy Lube chain are a great example of those type of frauds. A simple google search about them reveals a ton. Either way, those types of shops rip off and scam hard working people out their money. That's why I love youtube. It's about sharing and adding to the collective knowledge. :)

Great video man. The only thing I can think of that would make the alignment more precise is to adjust the rods while the car is up on jackstands and redo the meansurment after you drop the car back down. This way you take out the resistence of the road to your tires out of the equation. It does make it more cumbersome but in the end it would yield better results, at least in theory. Let me know what you think.

have to jack a car up, then it's because it's maybe lowered and I can't fit my arms under it or in the wheel well. It's easier on cars that are taller like trucks, van, suvs. And I only adjusted the passenger's side since the other side was good. I had to do it on the passenger's side because I changed suspension parts due to an accident from the previous owner. It wasn't fixed properly. I love working on my cars too! It's the only way to really learn, by doing it ourselves. Happy you liked it!

I love Tundra's! I might buy one someday. Changing suspension parts might change the alignment a bit. But if you can't drive it, then it really messed it up. But it shouldn't be that difficult to fix. Just make sure that you set it at the proper specs, google it if you don't know them. Hope it goes smoothly for you. Let me know. Thanks for the compliment, my sister gave me the shirt and I seem to wear it more than I should. :)

You are correct. Under acceleration the tires will toe out a bit. But, not all cars are the same in terms of the toe-in/out or parallel setting. Some cars have a bit of toe-in or out and others, like my car, are supposed to have zero-toe or parallel. It depends on the type of car you have. I imagine higher performing sports cars correct for that more heavily than my slow passenger economy car.

Sweet, I will jump on this next now that I am done with some other stuff and you did a GREAT job explaining the entire Alignment for guys like me! :-)

Glad you found it helpful. But the toe adjustment is just 1 part of a full alignment. There are other parts that require explanation that I didn't get into.

It puts a smile on my face knowing that people find it useful in some way. I kind of shot it quickly and I felt it was too long and I rambled on quite a bit. But as long as people got the main idea, it was worth it. Thanks for the kind feedback. It's appreciated. :)

I've seen other videos and people seem to really like using strings to do it. But that doesn't work for all cars because it relies on the back wheels being at the same wheel base as the front. Some sport cars have a wider wheel base at the back or maybe wider tires at the back in which case the string method is no longer accurate. How about those trucks that have 4 wheels at the back? Plus it's a pain to set that up. But, I'm glad you found mine useful. Thanks for the feedback!

The tire doesn't resist much when you move the tie rod end adjustment arm to either pull in or push out the tire. I never really thought about it. It would seem that it would be harder but it's actually pretty effortless with the car on the ground. I adjusted a friends Dodge RAM truck a while ago and that was pretty easy as well. And those are big heavy trucks!

Friend, no need for the "ball joint" correction at ~2:45. The tie rod end is in fact a ball joint. Cool vid and very informative!

@deadgodanubis your steps definately work. I did the same to the back. I'm just waiting for the car to settle after jacking to post finish ride height pics in that forum thread. I need to tweek the drivers side some more as its still slightly out. I think after driving a bit, rechecking alignments a good idea. Thanks for the car compliment, wouldn't believe i got it for $500 and have about $1200 into it. Anyway your the Man for helping me and others out! TY
