I am vision-impaired and could hear the garage opener getting louder. Thought it was time to call the repairman. After listening/"watching" this video I was totally surprised that even a blind guy could easily adjust the chain tension. Thanks so much for a video that served the handicapped folks as well. -ss

Just tightened my garage chain, one thing to add is make sure your chain doesn't start twisting. Along with tightening chain 1/2 inch above the midpoint, lubing all the bracket joints, replacing those crappy wheel that come with the door and getting anti vibration bushing where the motor meets the hangars then you'll have a door quieter than a church mouse

If you listened carefully , he clearly said adjustments the tension so the chain is 1/2" above the rail.

so i tightened my chain, used lithium grease on the chain, tracks, wheels and rail and now my garage door opening and closing is extremely quiet, cant even hear it in the house anymore. i always thought i just had a loud garage door opener, but started looking into tightening the chain and this video right here just showed me something that seems to obviously clear now. thanks!!!

I can't believe the narrator actually said it would "run more effeciently and more quieter"! Also, if most chains adjust with a 1/2" wrench, that could be mentioned.

Hey, I installed a new garage door opener about a year ago that uses a rubber belt. Today the garage door would not open. It seemed to have too much tension trying to lift it. It felt "spring-loaded". Do I need to decrease the torsion spring or adjust the tension on the sides of the door...or just tighten the belt a bit more? I un-snapped the door from the opener and opened the door manually. It felt really heavy to lift (tension against it) and it would not stay open. If you have any clues or video links, please respond asap. Thanks!

What if the chain is too tense? I've changed the chain and the gear, and now the door opens about 4 inches and then closes. It does not matter what I do with the limit switch assembly, the door do the same, opening about 4 inches and then close again- Thanks in advance for your answer!

Thank you for video. In my case the chain has a lot of slack and when it closes motor keeps on moving and stopping until I open and close several times then it will stop. Why this happens and how I can fix this problem.

wish you would of showed the actual slack spec of what too tight is. i know what its supposed to be when i adjust my motorcycle chain. so im guessing is somewhere about the same if not tighter because there is no suspension travel.

Hi; Have had the garage door company that installed our Liftmaster, (2 1/2 years old.) as well as another company come to analyze the following problem; The "shuttle" that snaps into the other "shuttle", will intermittently jam. The motor hums when you push the button to open for a few seconds each time, but the door will not open. If I tap the shuttle with something while motor is humming, garage door will usually open properly. One garage door company said "probably the motor". Second one said "needs new circuit board".???? This is an intermittent problem, and obviously is very troublesome. Chain appears to be proper tightness, and has been lubricated properly. (1/3 HP motor..Aluminum 2 car garage door.) Would appreciate any feedback. re; this... Thnx!

+Ronald Wolf What was the solution to your issue. 2 1/2 years is too soon for an opener to malfunction IMO. I was wondering if you experienced the same problem with the door connected to the chain as when the door was not connected. I'm having the main unit replaced under warranty (not a Liftmaster) due to a few issues during the first 4 months after it was installed.

can't figure out why the plastic gear keeps stripping out, any input?
@netdoctor1

I'm no expert, but in the interest of being helpful, I'll volunteer an opinion. Likely your opener is working to hard. You should check your spring configuration. Unlatched the door from the opener. Lift it up from the bottom of its travel to confirm smooth motion. Binding and jerking during travel in either direction causes additional load on your opener. Your track may be bent or twisted, or maybe the entire mechanism is dry and needs lubricated. Check out other videos for tips on how to properly lubricate a garage door. Stop the door at approximately waist-high. Optimally, the door should move neither up nor down (balanced). If not balanced, then a slight downward movement is OK. If it falls from this position, you need to tighten your spring adjustments if possible. if it raises from this position, you likely have too much spring pulling upward. You may be able to adjust your spring tensions to relieve some of the load on your opener. Check out other videos for tips on how to make these adjustments. There is also the possibility that your opener is just too lightweight for your door configuration. Check these things. If you don't find anything radically out of place, may be time to consult with a pro.

The Chamberlain model advises you to release the mechanism from the door before adjusting. Don't ask me why that is necessary since I've tightened them up before without releasing. Why am I researching this issue? The bozo who installed chain drive unit (not a Chamberlain) never properly adjusted the chain tension, and my unit was a BOX RAIL (not T-Rail as shown in this video) so a saggy chain will contact the chain enclosure. A chain on a T-rail will not have this particular problem.
