Always wondered why your pH strip doesn’t change colour when you dip it in your homemade cream? In this video I will show you how to measure and adjust the pH of a thick cream. I will show you how to dilute your cream and adjust it in a few easy steps.
Tools needed:
pH Meter (or strips)
Small beaker / shot-glass
Demineralised / Distilled water (this doesn’t work with tapwater)
Baking Soda
Citric Acid
Pipette

I have a question? After getting my creams PH to the level I want say 5.5 ph. And this was done with 1 gram cream to 9 grams of Distilled water. How do I Adjust a 1 pound of Cosmetic Cream ,I had to raise the ph up and I used 3 drops 0.05 ml ,Do I now multiply 0.05 ml per drop x (gram = 453.592 rounded up to 455 x 0.05 ml = 2.25 drops. I've been trying to find this out and haven't seen or heard how to do this. Question? can your Preservative change the ph ? Thank you for any info you can give.

I have a question? shouldn't you add a preservative in your citric acid solution? like since this would be extra water in your emulsified cream wouldn't that cause problems if you dont add a preservative to your citric acid/water solution?

You have to make a buffer of 50% citric acid and 50% distilled water. Thus you have a very acidic solution that does not allow the growth of microorganisms. And you use so little, 1-3 drops, that it does not affect the amount of water in the product.

Thank you for this video super helpful. How many drops of baking diluted baking soda do I need to for a 60g jar of moisturizer. I would simply measure this by multiplying the number of drops per gram of moisturizer? In order to get ph 5.5 Thank you for your help

Hi Sherelle, Thank you 🙂 ❤️ As much I would love to give you an exact answer, I'm afraid you need to discover this yourself by trial and error. Basically, it all depends on your moisturizer and the types of ingredients you use. I would advise you to start with 5 drops at a time and check the pH in between until you get the desired pH. From your question, I understand your moisturizer is below 5.5, as you would like to add a baking soda dilution? Depending on how low it is, I've noticed that 5 drops usually raise the pH by 0.3 to 0.5. So give it a try! Unfortunately, there is no easy quick formula I can give you. I wish! That would make pH adjusting a looooot easier 🙂. Let me know how you get on! Happy making! ❤️ Malou

What do you do with the water and product solution after you get the right ph? Do you throw it out? How do you know how many drop to put in the main product to lower or raise the ph since your working in a smaller scale when you did the 10% 90% solution?!
